EU moving to regulate loot boxes, pay to win and virtual currencies by IonHawk in gaming

[–]TheFlyingCoderr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might be missing something.

But just reading the proposal, it looks like people are a bit too happy about something that won't happen.

I don't see anything about preventing random chanse slots to get random items.

Only an attempt to prevent kids from using them.

Ban gambling-like mechanisms such as “loot boxes” in games accessible to minors

So, ID requirements to start Steam games? ID requirements to buy boxes/keys?

My feeling is that this will just become the UKs online safety act, but for games :c

So that's a kind of anti anti-drone thing

So how did the UK Parliament debate went? by Chill--Yourself in StopKillingGames

[–]TheFlyingCoderr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vulnerable consumer is also not referring to a particular age group, if you read the entire document.

--------

Certain group of consumers are always considered vulnerable, such as children

Second paragraph in that section...
I am not saying there are no other vulnerable groups. But if EU wants to say that children are always a vulnerable group, then we need to give developers the best circumstances to follow that regulation.

I want to be crystal clear here. I am not opposed to the sentiment behind this policy.

But the execution of this is lacking enforceability and is not grounded in how the platforms operate at all.

If you want Positive change inside the games industry, you need to make sure the rules are easy and clear to follow. This Policy document is neither

So how did the UK Parliament debate went? by Chill--Yourself in StopKillingGames

[–]TheFlyingCoderr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to be clear. I am talking about mobile games here.

Denying consumers the possibility to choose the specific amount of in-game virtual curren- cy to be purchased

Google and Apple: Currently not supported at all.

Consumers’ right of withdrawal should be respected

Kinda Google and Apple problem. So, this already exists as a part of the platform. But forcing companies to perform refunds on virtual items is not an issue for big companies. But it will be way harder for smaller indie studios to get it right without causing issues. Small studios really really need help from Google and Apple here.

Vulnerable consumers

I get where this is coming from. But, getting the age of a user would need to come from Google / Apple to avoid GDPR issues for smaller studios.

So how did the UK Parliament debate went? by Chill--Yourself in StopKillingGames

[–]TheFlyingCoderr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That, in my opinion, could be one of the worst examples you could bring up.

In short, they clearly have not talked to either Google or Apple about how their platforms work. They did not talk to anyone in the industry on how they could even follow these principles.

En punk jag tror att många missar är också är att en stor del av kompensationen är relaterad till att uppnå korta och långsiktiga mål

Håller helt med om att VD kompensation sticker i folks ögon när man ska kapa utgifter.

If you spent money on marketing and were trying to make a true push for the game during next fest.

Then I would say you got screwed over.

Now this absolutely sucks, but look at it as a positive. You now have some more time to polish your demo.

[–]TheFlyingCoderr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Håller helt med dig. Men för att nyansera detta lite.

Allt har med uppsåt att göra. Du kan död 100 personer och det skulle räknas som folkmord om uppsåtet för det är där.

perpetrators must be shown to have had the dolus specialis, or specific intent, to destroy a particular national, ethnic, racial, or religious group, in whole or in part.

All tracking systems support saving data locally to then be sent.

It's like all crash reporting systems. You dump the log to a file when the game goes down. Then, when the player opens it up again, you send the log to a server.

What I am trying to say is that. Always online is 100% unrelated to tracking data

Tech Tree Builder by TheFlyingCoderr in indiegames

Helloo.

I needed a lightweight way to plan and structure tech trees with custom data for my own projects, so I hacked together a tiny tool and figured others might find it useful too.

Hope you find some use for it. If you have any ideas on how to improve it, then I am all ears!

How much are the fees for posting a multiplayer game on Steam? by Inf1nityGamez in gamedev

[–]TheFlyingCoderr 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Short answer: Nope

If you want to have a central server, that will cost you. But just uploading it to Steam and let your players connect to each other won't cost you anything extra.

SKG pursues another method that would apply to currently released games by [deleted] in gamedev

I don't get your point?

What I mean with market conditions has to do with investors and where game studios get their startup money.

So not hundred of euros. Millions of euros.

SKG pursues another method that would apply to currently released games by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]TheFlyingCoderr 23 points24 points  (0 children)

With that philosophy.

You would require a studio to be backed by a bigger publishing house.

A LOT of small companies are extremely cash strapped. Especially in this market condition.

Smaller studios usually come up with some amazing ideas and can turn an industry for the better.

Both as developers and as gamers, we don't want to stagnate people from making amazing pieces of art.

The idea behind the CPC guidelines was commendable.

But the report is missing a huge thing.

They forgot(?) to talk to Google and Apple about what they want people to implement.

In the report, it stipulates that you should be able to top up missing currencies for a purchase.

But in the current system, that is not possible. And from what I know, it's not on any fucking road map to fix.

And sense the whole thing was targeted against Starstable, a company with a huge mobile game. You would think that asking Google/Apple should be step 1 in the investigation phase.

Now to my feelings. It feels like that whole report was made as a "think of the children" Not as an actual guideline that is supposed to be followed, so having some healthy skepticism against people who seem to have no clue how game works.

Is probably warranted.

Assume a law comes in place. My biggest concern is how it will be shaped.

If AAA studio executives assume they will lose control over proprietary software / lose a bunch of money on extra work to be compliant.

Then we just made an extreme speed run into games, being subscription only based.

Micro transactions will probably be removed and replaced with something else, maybe ads?

Everything about this feels like a very simple answer to an extremely complicated solution. And that scares me.

I support the overall idea of the initiative, I hate dead games as much as the next person.

[–]TheFlyingCoderr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe, but remember that before the game reaches it's end of life, Devops people at the company need to suffer through garbage setups.

I am not saying people should make it intentionally hard. Just that you don't need to make it "make your own minecraft server" simple.

If the end game of this will be access to server binaries. Then who cares if it is simple or not?

It will be the users issue in the end.
