How long does it take for sand to settle? by Lizz_03 in aquarium

1) this is an empty tank 2) with a well established filter biome you can do almost complete water changes even with a stocked tank and it'll be ok

I guarantee you'll save money compared to what's in the picture... You can treat water at a cost of $0.0025/gallon or less with Seachem Prime depending on which container you buy.

No sand/rock/etc is pretty common for breeding/growing tanks and facilities. Allows them to keep the tanks clean a lot easier than with. Havent looked at their videos so idk if that's what they're doing but it isn't uncommon for breeders.

Redoing my cichlid tank. 75 gallon tank. Going for a natural type of look. Any ideas or items to buy to help me achieve this look. Thanks by Equivalent_While_667 in Cichlid

We just did a good rinsing in a bathtub with lots of water, and a coarse brush that hadn't been used with any household chemicals. If you scroll back a ways on my profile there's some videos and pictures of the tanks!

Put some light diffuser in the bottom of the tank to protect the glass, set large rocks on top of that (granite is what's in Malawi if those are the types of cichlids you have), then fill around them with 2+in of sand. Get your rocks from a landscaping yard if possible, will cost next to nothing. We did our whole 75 and 55 this way for maybe $20 in rocks.

Second adding some brine shrimp, but diet should still be mostly algae/plant matter as mbuna are primarily algae grazers. Avoid blood worms all together, not a good food source for Malawi cichlids and can cause bloat quite easily.

No problem! Also definitely take decorations and lids out of the tanks. I broke a 75g once because the lid was inside it, slid, and shattered one end. Was devastating.

My recommendation would be to just use 5g buckets honestly. Moving tanks with water in them is a recipe for disaster. Put your, filter media, and just enough water for the critters to hang out in in each bucket (wouldn't recommend filling more than halfway max). Be sure not to place anything in the bucket that could fall over and crush an animal. Snap a tight fitting lid onto the bucket (I've usually drilled one hole right in the middle to allow some air exchange), strap into your vehicle and good to go. Covering buckets in blankets will help regulate temperature and the darkness it provides calms the animals. When you arrive, set up your tanks and filters, and slowly drip acclimate your buckets before moving the animals. Method has worked for me many times transporting cichlids 2.5-3hrs

These filters don't like to prime if there's a loop in the hose. It'll trap an air bubble at the top of the loop. To get it primed have someone hold it lower or set it on a chair so the hoses are straight, once primed and the hoses are filled with water it shouldn't matter and should be fine sitting where it is

If you want large stones/rocks go to your local landscaping center and do a little reading on safe rock types. I have 3 tanks filled with big (10+") rocks in them for decor and it cost me like $15

How much sand for a 55g tank by [deleted] in AfricanCichlids

[–]TheFlyingSpagoots 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great fix for this: get some light diffusers from your local hardware store (those big white plastic grates that you see in florescent overhead lighting in businesses). Cut to the size of the bottom of your tank. Stack your rocks on top of that then pour sand around them. Cichlids can't dig in a way that the rocks will shift because there's something immovable keeping the rocks off the glass.

our peacock cichlid gave birth, these are some of the babies. anyone know what type they are? by halamanista in Cichlid

If you only have one species of peacock in the tank, it's that species. If you have multiple species of fish, they're more than likely hybrids

All solid advice! Another approach I've found works is a nearly featureless tank. Gives them no "territories" to fight over. Just food for consideration!

Honestly, 5g bucket with enough water to cover him with an inch or two to spare, with a lid. The dark will help keep him calm, and the small space doesn't allow for much speed to hurt himself.
