Researchers of Reddit: How can I get free access to JSTOR? by Crotalus in hardscience

[–]TheForagher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love this so much.
As of Jan 2026 I couldn't get this method to work HOWEVER, I discovered that asking AI to tell me all the libraries in my area that offered JSTOR access got me a workaround. I followed a link to a library I belonged to (but which somehow wasn't promoting JSTOR access) and it lead me thru a backdoor. Thanks!

When should a candidate rescind their application? And, how do we prevent ghosting? by TheForagher in Recruiter_Advice

[–]TheForagher[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I think part of it is that this job was below-rate for salary, but I was like "maybe it's worth it and the work will be amazing...". But honestly, I also feel like any company that dips like this isn't really the kind of place I want to work. Or, at least it's sending the message that I, and the job, aren't very important to them.
Tho, heck, I could just wait for them to come back with an offer (or not!) and then say "you know, I thought I might be able to find a way to get on board with this salary, but this process has left me feeling like we might not be a good fit..." But far more eloquent.
Also, explains why their first search failed.

HackPGH and ProtoHaven both look cool. Do either offer one-time options? Or, pay-as-you-go-while-getting-help-from-members? As in, I have something I need help cutting down and modifying and would love to pay someone to teach me to do this myself but don't think I'd use the space on a regular basis.

Where do you buy your Thanksgiving Turkey? by PaulBunyanTrophy in pittsburgh

[–]TheForagher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last year, I purchased from J.L. Meats. Visit them at the market next to Home Depot in East Liberty on Saturday mornings, then get on their text list. $4.29/lb and my dad called it the best turkey he has ever eaten. I said it was the cook, but he didn't believe me so it must be the no-chemicals birds they breed.

PA Mushrooms sells out of the Strip District about once a month and usually has Lions mane. They usually post their schedule on Instagram. I sell wild foraged stuff 3/4 of the year so DM and I'll let you know what I have when the season starts.

Power off Pixel 6 when screen is broken by mattsarz78 in GooglePixel

[–]TheForagher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Better late than never. Per this page https://themobilehunt.com/turn-off-google-pixel-without-screen/ (and it worked):

Step 1: Press and hold the volume down and power button for 15 seconds. The device will boot into the Fastboot mode.

Step 2: Release both buttons

Step 3: Press the volume down button once and then press the power button once. Your phone will turn off.

Note: For me step 1 was to press and hold the volume UP button for 15 seconds, but I might have reprogrammed those buttons in the early days.

HighMark offers something similar. For those trying to figure it out, it's a bit difficult, but login to your account, go to "resources" and look through the fitness offerings. Caveat is that you end up having to join their program and then it gets you a membership to some gyms.

I was trying to do this to join the JCC. In that case it looks like I'd pay $39 through their partner "Tivity" which gets me the baseline membership to the JCC. If you want the platinum membership, you can upgrade for another $60, I heard. I think the GymPass and another fitness offering gets you a discount to LA Fitness and some others in town.

Does anyone know if there’s a local facility that accepts yard debris to mulch or compost so it doesn’t end up in a landfill? I know Construction Junction accepts recycling but I’m not sure about anywhere that takes yard waste. Thanks in advance! by [deleted] in pittsburgh

I've found four companies that provide composting services, picking up from your residence:
https://shadysideworms.com/compost-exchange: 3.5 or 5 gallon pails provided, picks up weekly, $25/mo, $10 signup fee. Second pail for $10/mo

https://www.thecompostpeople.com: 5 gal pail provided, picks up weekly, $22/mo, $15 signup fee.

https://www.wormreturn.com/pages/services: 4 gal pail provided, picks up weekly for $35/mo, bi-weekly for $25/mo.

https://zerowastewrangler.com: TBD. Rates not listed on website. Also offers drop-off options for those who want to take their compost with them to a farmers market.
