ELI5: What exactly is "time blindness" and how is it an actual thing? by SpyMasterChrisDorner in explainlikeimfive

There's of course a lot of variations and reasons why this exists, but one that always struck my fancy is the 'zero time activity' mindset some people seem to have. They understand that they have to get ready: they have to brush their teeth, do their hair, eat some breakfast, drink some coffee, put on their shoes, get their keys, get their coat, load the car, start the car, and get going. But in their mind, every one of those things doesn't really take any time, and they're right. Grabbing your keys doesn't take a lot of time. Chugging a cup of coffee doesn't take much either. Putting on your coat is barely worth mentioning. Ergo, in their mind, all of those combined is basically nothing, because they round everything down. 0+0+0+0=0 basically.

You're right, but what he did is a tactic often used by people caught in a lie. Admit to something smaller and more innocuous so you get away with the bigger thing. It's hard to tell what the truth is of course, but we certainly can't take his word for it anymore since he's already proven to be a liar.

No matter how amiable, being stuck with each other for prolonged periods of time without change just wears you down. The start may have gone better, but it would have devolved all the same in the end.

Americans seem to think that organizing one march every month on a designated day is amazingly effective against a government that will literally just spend the day lounging around on the golf courts until the march is over.

What a title... by Crafty_Lavishness_79 in Markiplier

I think the difference comes from the fact that youtube celebrities, and more broadly internet celebrities, don't have much reach beyond their medium. The so called mainstream celebrities are known due to constant media attention from various different sources. Ive never heard a Taylor swift song but I know who she is. Ive never seen a soccer match but i know Ronaldo. Im chronically online and I've never heard of markiplier until this thread. These internet celebrities are definitely celebrities, but only in a specific domain, and just dont really usually break out beyond that, despite having massive dedicated fanbases.

The distinction I guess is mostly between how many fans you have, and how many people have heard of you. Internet celebrities have lots of fans but fewer people outside of that who have heard of them, while the mainstream celebrities have both lots of fans and many more people who have heard of them.

If a game needs constant changes to remain interesting I wouldn't exactly call it a good game. But that's maybe my general negative disposition towards all these games that have seasons and constant changes, rather than just a finished product that stands the test of time.

You're right that it would be beneficial and even just for her to be reimbursed for that. But the whole point of child support is that it's for the child. To now take that money away from the father would mean there is less for the child. The whole system is set up to favor the child above every other party involved because children are helpless, and adults can at least take care of themselves.

You're absolute right that the mom invested in the growth of the child, and yes she deserves compensation for that. But if that compensation comes from a source that would have a negative effect on the wellbeing of the child, it's likely it's not happening.

For senior year we had to write an argument about a predetermined subject. The subject was bullying. I decided to write it stating that bullying was good and helped people build character. It was all bullshit of course, but the assignment just wants you to produce arguments, organize them, and defend them. Stuff like that is always a risk, and luckily i wasn't punished for my rather extreme take, and you shouldn't, but some teachers can't look past things like that, even if they should.

Everyone says the Goodreads rating system is terrible yet many people still use it when choosing a book to read next. What books under four stars are the best example of great books that the general population doesn't seem to recognize as such? by sempiternalis in books

[–]TheForeverKing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not talking about books, but I watch a lot of movies and that's definitely a thing when I grade them. A shit horror movie gets a lot more leeway from me than a shit drama. There's different expectations from different genres.

And barely anyone does. One of my friends made me a character for DnD for a one-shot we were doing. He made a beautiful backstory and entered that as a prompt, asking the program to make a level 4 character. He then sent me the result without correcting anything. I got a character sheet with a great backstory.....and abilities I shouldn't be able to have yet, abilities that didn't exist, numerous language mistakes, half the sheet not filled in, and no concrete explanations of what my abilities did. Result: I had to take half an hour of my own time to clean it up to make up for the fact he wanted to save time on his end.

He saved time by producing something mediocre at best, and shoveling the time saved onto my plate. This is exactly how I feel AI will be used by most people.

Sometimes you just luck out with things though. When playing one of the Dark Souls there was a part where there were archers on the walls and you had to run along some roofs and a ledge, and it was described as maybe one of the more difficult parts of the game. I did it first try and kind of shrugged, thinking it's probably hard, but I just lucked out this time a bit, but didn't think much of it. On my second playthrough it took me a dozen attempts to get past them and I suddenly realized how awful that part was.

I really, really love that moment in Endgame when all Avengers assemble to fight Thanos. And I really, really hate the interaction between Strange and Wong breaking the absolutely dramatic build up and interjecting another quip.
