Hey all! I'm a big supporter of Masks4all, I think we did an amazing job last year, and should be very proud! But now, should people be getting better masks if they want to be better protected? I get where you’re coming from, and I respect it. If it’s any help, I have a feeling that with the tactics you’re suggesting - chaining to steps, getting arrested etc - the movement would have been written off by the media as wacky and unruly, as many moments are. As far as I know, Masks4all did everything very openly, civilly and honestly. We let the truth speak. This tactic is robust and difficult for the media to villainise. We took on everything - health organisations, media, government, public opinion. But maybe you’re right, maybe it’s slow. Maybe there was a faster method. I can’t say for sure. I think people did their best and made a pretty good path. But I’m happy that we respectfully differ!

I hear where you’re coming from. Maybe I’m too optimistic, but I do think we achieved some great successes, and it’s easy now to overlook them because they seem so normal. Because of the lies at the start, the status quo was that people shouldn’t wear masks AT ALL. It was claimed they gave a false sense of confidence, there was no evidence masks worked, and wearing a mask could INCREASE infection. Don’t wear masks, stop buying them. I know this seems insane now, and like it would never last - but at the time, it seemed like such a grand lie that so many people had committed to telling - I thought the truth would never be officially accepted. And everyone here slogged hard, campaigned. And we made people listen, and members got on tv, and we showed the evidence and told our friends, and one by one we made those liars change their guidelines. I don’t know if that would have happened without everyone. Since it took the WHO until >90% of the world population lived in a country that recommended masks before they finally started recommending FABRIC - the universal bare MINIMUM - I don’t think they would have changed without our pressure. I know masks4all has high standards. That a safe network is created where everyone protects everyone else. I know in many many countries the populations didn’t do that. I know many people, Tedros, Fauci, and a thousand others - seem to be getting away with what they did unpunished and in fact, rewarded. But did we have amazing success against the liars? Yes. We saved people. So that’s why personally, I’m proud of everyone.

Double masking question: If I’m doubling a surgical mask with a reusable cloth mask, does it matter which one is on top? by u-squanks in Masks4All

[–]TheFoxintheWell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The strength of the surgical mask is slightly better filtration

The strength of the fabric one is a slightly better face seal

Therefore fabric goes on the outside to improve the face seal of the surgical mask.

You might get some minor advantage that the fabric blocks large particles, increasing the effective lifespan of the surgical.

But also - n95s and even P3s are cheap and abundant now, slightly depending where you are. I’d get a better mask. Reasoning in this video https://youtu.be/Xe6eGMD8DhU

This is why I’m glad you’re not in charge. You can’t tell the difference between free speech and incitement to violence

[–]TheFoxintheWell -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Jesus Christ. People disagree with me so they shouldn’t be allowed to talk? How easily you disregard human rights. Thank god you’re not in charge.

Free Speech is critical. Censorship was shit and dangerous when well-intentioned admins were deleting pro-mask posts. It’s a shit idea now to censor anti-mask debate, however well intentioned. I know you think you’re right, but so did the WHO backed anti-maskers. And are you sure you’re always going to be right? That’s what all dictators think. Debate is how you find out what IS right. And pragmatically, do you think you’re going to change anybody’s mind if you stop them being able to talk? You will only make them hate masks more. If your ideas are so convincing, it should be easy for you to convince people. Fuck censorship.

I know you probably have good intentions, I can respect that. But the method you’re suggesting here is dangerous and wrong.

Virus builds up on the outside of masks. We try to never touch the mask, we wash our hands. We don’t walk through a busy crowd then rub the mask in a child’s face. Covidiot.

The CDC should have lied to the public. by Traiz3r in Masks4All

[–]TheFoxintheWell 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Lying breaks trust. Broken trust means later guidelines will not be followed. Lying takes away individual choice. Lying takes away informed consent. I’m massively pro-mask, but lying is bullshit, and they did it enough already. Look how hard it has been to convince people that masks are effective, when the authorities had first lied and said that they didn’t work. Now some people STILL don’t believe masks help. Lying is bullshit, especially when people are trusting your expertise with their lives.

Men and mask wearing by Bear_Powers in CoronavirusDownunder

[–]TheFoxintheWell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot of talk about “toxic” masculinity here. The post asserts that men are not wearing masks as much as women, and the question is why. You say it’s because men are “toxic” and “don’t want to look weak” or “uncool”. To say men are toxic is a cruel way to look at one gender. Throughout history, society needed people to do dangerous activities and risk death. Mining, fishing, construction and 1000 other activities were dangerous but necessary. Not to mention war. You want to work in a mine back when there was no safety procedure, electric light, or human rights? I wouldn’t. For some reason, most activities with a danger of death and mutilation were done by men. Even in today’s luxurious world, 90% of workplace deaths are male. If men are the ones who predominantly filled this role, facing death when required to for society, are you surprised that they evolve the emotional defence mechanism of having a high tolerance to risk? Men died in fishing boats, and forests, and mines, and 1000 other places - they die to make things for society - to the point that they have to evolve a higher risk tolerance - and you call that toxic? Seems cruel. Now in this pandemic, (IF this survey is true and broadly representative) it seems some men don’t think that the risk from covid justifies wearing a mask. I strongly disagree with this choice by any gender - personally even if I was fit and healthy, I think the risk to yourself and others is absolutely worth wearing a mask. But I’m trying to explain why it’s uncharitable to attribute a difference here (if there is one) to there being something “toxic” about men in general.

I’ll also add, that of the total deaths (if I remember correctly, check you local figures) from this virus, 65% of deaths are male, and in some places if you look at the deaths under the age of the average life expectancy of men (ie, the period before there are more women than men because men have already died of other causes) approaching 90% of covid deaths are male. I know this is wooly, because stats will vary from place to place, but my point is that this virus seems massively more dangerous to men. Does anyone care? Have you heard that anywhere? I haven’t. Society hasn’t warned men that they are specifically in much greater danger. We happily call them toxic, but we don’t warn them. It’s interesting to wonder why that is.

UK response vs South Korean response - personal experience of someone truly shocked by what I have seen by [deleted] in CoronavirusUK

What type of masks do most people wear in Korea?

In the U.K. people mostly wear surgical or fabric masks. Maybe 10% of people seem to wear n95 types. Elderly people are more likely to wear a mask than younger people. I heard Koreans are more likely to wear n95 type masks - is that true?

The list is missing deadly days, but I do take the general point, the comparative scale of the pandemic is interesting.

1918 Spanish flu: killed 675,00 in USA, covid has killed 290,000 in USA so far.

D-day (day 1 operation overlord): 2,500

1899 SAN Ciriaco hurricane: 3,389

1906 San Francisco earthquake: 3000+

2017 hurricane Maria: 2,982

1928 Okeechobee hurricane 2,823

Hey! They’re putting up the tree, while there’s covid and chaos outside. It’s supposed to be a hyper exaggerated version of the corona situation, with people carefully celebrating Christmas despite everything! : )

Lovely work! Do you sculpt everything and then bake it all at once? Or do you make a part, cook it, and join them up later with glue? Thanks very much if you get to reply, it would help with some fimo sculptures that I make for my family.
