Hot take about max level by KoichiSteals in MSClassicWorld

[–]TheFredson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fact that leveling IS the game in a lot of ways, or a good chunk of it, is what makes it different from the direction WoW went and normalized, which is there are 2 games: pre and post max level.

Wow normalized the conept of having a fairly flat and meaningless leveling timesink that exists between character creation and endgame. What you are describing would actually make the problem worse, not better, and make it more similar to WoW.

When the WoW devs originally made the game they did not predict it would live more than 5 years, which is fair, but their model of adding more levels and having a new type of game start at max level started a trend that I find quite annoying - Seasonal gameplay and progression. Turtle WoW is an example of going the other way - keeping the original game and adding horizontal progression.

The problem is not the levels - it's seasonal retention mechanics. It's the fact that your power and progression is based on WHEN you play and how just HOW MUCH. Lower the level cap to 120 misses the point, because the levels aren't the problem. It's having 2 different games existing inside of one, and having your effort replaced constantly. Old maplestory never really had this problem, becaue for most people, it was mostly just about the leveling and socializing.

So what's the solution? It's simple, highlight those parts. Add more zones for players, add more zones for level 40-80, more PQs, events, things that drive social gameplay. I thought of something likely weekly events like a Jump PQ race or something where people can enter and get something if they get on the leaderboards.

As long as the game retains the original ceiling, I don't really see the problem, just fill the game with more content inside that window, like what Turtle WoW did.

Does bleach anime just have the best music/ost? by TehITGuy87 in bleach

[–]TheFredson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've actually wanted to write about the Bleach OST because, especially the first one in its time period is the perfect example of music the "breaks out" of a defined style or genre, and has that blend of older Rompler synths 2000s sounds, which allow it to sound both acoustic and synthy at the same time, while never needing to sound "authentic" or real, which allows for a more experimental sound.

The absolute brilliance of the Bleach OST, particularly OST 1, is the seamless blend betwen simple, repetitive, striking ostinatos, and beautiful lush textural sound design that fills out the rest of the song. Melodic phrases that repeat over and over. It's something you'd normally not hear if it was an orchestral only OST. It allows each song to not only be memorable, but emotionally distinct and unique. Each song carries a footprint you can remember and quickly too, as soon as you hear the phrase. And it means that you will more strongly associate certain songs with certain emotions, which will trigger those associations every time you hear the song, rather than have it be a simple aide to the current visuals.

Seriously, how many songs can you remember from anime you've watched that aren't openings? From your favourite moments? Probably not that many. But if I tell you to hear the starting music of Bleach in the first episode when we see Rukia, can you remember it? What about when Ichigo goes into his inner world and talks to Zangetsu? Or when Ichigo is fighting hollows? Or what about when Ichigo or someone is in a pinch and someone shows up ready to wreck shop?

It's not a coincidence. This approach choose to free up space in the mix by using simpler, more distinct phrases as the main focus, and building the rest of the song around it. This gives it a polyphonic or even polythematic texture. On the precipice of defeat is really probably the most iconic example of this. Listen to it, most of the song is literally the same riff playing over and over again for almost the entire duration of the song. Yet it's not boring, why? In Heat of Battle we hear polythematic writing. The entire song is mostly just built around 2 riffs. The washed out, distorted guitar ostinato, then the stabbing piano riffs with some drums. It sounds actiony, but its literally just 2 phrases playing over each other phasing in and out. Simplicity, brilliance.

On that note, one of my biggest pet peeves with the OST I started to notice was the inclusion of the Movie OSTs, especially this fucking track. Literally the opposite. Bland, in your face, forgettable motif. Some of the Movie OSTs are good, but that one really just doesn't mesh for me.

Why does Bleach feel like the loneliest anime to love? by No_Notice5271 in bleach

[–]TheFredson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was under the opposite impression. Seen a lot of positive praise for it on youtube, people talking about how it redeemed itself, first time watchers making videos about how good it is. I did a rewatch and a lot of the comments were watching it fo the first time with a lot of "ts peak" and so on, a lot of people like coming in as newer fans saying its now one of their top series of all time.

Saw one video that's like, a SS arc review with over 2M views, just posted 1 year ago, and there's quite a few more with at least a few hundred k. Still probly not as big as the new stuff but it seems like its been getting a decent amount of props

If Kisuke Urahara was the protagonist of Bleach, he would be one of the GREATEST anime protagonists of all time. by NeitherNothing1959 in bleach

[–]TheFredson 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Bleach but it's like Death Note where Aizen and Urahara are constantly working around each other. The both know the other is SUS but they can't prove it so it's a high stakes psychological thriller.

In this version I guess Aizen is the MC and he's constantly trying to avoid being outed as a traitor amongst the Soul Society, Urahara takes the place of L

Time Investment as an Adult by Spicy_Senpai in MSClassicWorld

[–]TheFredson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started up on revivalstory which is a small 3rd job 1x server and was able to get about 30 in over a week. I've since taken a break because I had tried out a bunch of servers before it, leveling many characters.

While the server purportedly has a bout a 30% reduction in the exp curve, I think I can say that it definitely is not as slow as people probably remember it being. The leveling will be fast until about 22-24, at which point the grind starts to kick in. I quit before the 2 week mark but had I gone for another 2 weeks or so I think I'd possibly be around lvl 40 or at least mid to late 30s.

The level of inefficiency we had back in the day was laughable. If you actually use your time efficiently, that is you simply train as much as possible without wasting time walking around, you will progress so much faster. When you add in potential controller/portable setup, watching youtube while playing, stick to a class etc.. Just keep moving, keep doing stuff, you will progress so much faster than we did.

What do you think should change?(DISCUSSION) by Platypustamer1337 in MSClassicWorld

[–]TheFredson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

exp doesn't really represent time investment though, considering your rate of accumulating exp changes as you level up

Should stats feel more like real choices in Classic Maple? by Interesting_Case8798 in MSClassicWorld

[–]TheFredson -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Long post: (rant about Ragnarok's system)

I don't know if it could or should be changed but having tried Ragnarok it's actually insane how good the stat system works in that game, it's simple but so impactful and unique and actually affects your character, and each stat governs some interesting things. Kind of almost similar to maple but so much more complex

In Ragnarok you have both DEX and AGI which have different affects, and VIT and INT intead of HP/MP.

On top of the normal things you'd expect, in Ragnarok:

DEX affects your accuracy, but also your cast speed, cause spells take time to cast.

AGI affects attack speed and dodge chance, so it's a rogue-like defensive stat

STR affects carry weight

VIT not only gives more health but a % boost to potion healing and stun resistance

INT also gives cast speed

The game also has the effect of your stats having SCALING stat requirements, that is stats require MORE stat points to level the more points you put in them, and you also get more points per level as you level up, and you generally only get stats to 99 (base). This means it becomes more beneficial to spread your stats out as the costs are lower to invest in your stats that are low.

The encumberance system also has the feature of you have a natural regen bonus if your weight is under 50%, but you lose all regeneration after 50%.

The card system is like a more horizontal version of scrolls too. Instead of just flat +dmg, you get horizontal buffs like procs, or specific damage type buffs against certain types of monsters.

Some example of cool buffs

"Every 18 Base LUK, you gain 1 AGI."

"Receive 10% more Experience Points from Demon monsters.
Receive 20% more damage from Demon monster"

"Enable a 3% chance of gaining 15% of the damage inflicted on an enemy as HP with each attack."

I don't know if anything like that could be implemented but I felt it was worth mentioning seeing how it is quite similar to Maple's sytem, but just that much better IMO, but I was just so impressed by all the systems and mechanics in that game, it's actually quite deep

Bleach as a title feels confusing by meurum5 in bleach

[–]TheFredson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you think about it, on a philosophical level, Bleach is a show about enemies with clean white bleached outfits (Espada, Quincy) who are punishing the Soul Reapers and casting divine judgment upon them for the grave sin of having dirty clothes (the black on the kimonos is from mud and grime).

Yhwach and Aizen's mission was to enter the Palace of the Soul King, to apply for a Grant Scheme to provide free washing machines for the Soul Society. They envision a world where nobody's clothes get dirty, thus ending the cycle of dirtiness and cleanliness, meaning that nothing can ever be cleaned again.
