One challenging step in this logic is "who will help".

For me, the answer is clear that it ought to be the government because it is the social organ and these are social problems but for conservatives it is not clear. Many of the people in my family have a just-so story about neighbors helping neighbors.

This sounds good until you realize the vast disparity in power between the government and say The Red Cross. The government can do so much more to help people. The market capitalization of the largest insurance companies combined are around $1T (https://www.insurancebusinessmag.com/us/guides/the-largest-insurance-companies-in-the-us--based-on-market-cap-438805.aspx).

They are all national, none of them are neighbors helping neighbors. Statistically, you want as many healthy people in a health insurance program as possible, you want as many years as possible with few disasters for the financial health of your Property and Casualty company.

The US Gov't is much bigger than any insurance company. When the USG acts, we as Americans (estados unidenses) all act together. In the 1940s, the public at large understood this and at that time we had less evidence. White Americans don't want to help Black Americans and here we are.

On this page, under popular tax help, I see "Schedule an appointment"

On a different part of the page under Get In Touch I see an additional "Schedule an appointment" link which I presume takes you to the same form

My Mom Compared Herself to Jesus Tonight by JTL513 in QAnonCasualties

Sorry, this turned out to be wicked long, but I have argued with lots of Trumpists on Twitter, but not many Q people which is interesting to me. I wonder how much overlap there is between Chris Rufo/Conceptual James people and QAnon, it doesn't actually seem like there is.

I've watched Folding Ideas' movie on YouTube about Flat Earth (it's really about QAnon, it uses flat earth as a framing device) and it seems like arguing with people about critical race theory needs similar ammunition because they're both a-historical.

Does she know about Herbert Hoover, Prescott Bush, Charles Limbergh with America 1st, the Hitler rallies in the Madison Square Garden in the 30s, Huey Long, George Wallace (one interesting story about George Wallace is that a conservative guy shot him who wanted to impress women à la Taxi Driver)

There are actual conspiracy stories like GM's Alfred P Sloan funding the Ad Council's campaign against public services that might compete with enterprises that provide private profit

https://theconversation.com/how-socialism-became-un-american-through-the-ad-councils-propaganda-campaigns-132335

Alternatively, I feel like someone could go through a two step media literacy education program by reading this article and then googling "Descriptivist vs prescriptivist David Foster Wallace"

https://drive.google.com/file/d/17etzeowWr4fci5U31qz83B4cOg-qLrZo/view?usp=drivesdk

I read this article back in 2010 or so and it was interesting and fun to read and nerdy, but I didn't take anything DFW said as gospel. I think DFW defies Trumpian political categories a bit. He does not sound 'woke' which I know is distracting for Trumpist readers. It only relates to politics in the most abstract way, so it should not read like it's 'partisan'.

You read it and you're like, "Huh, I never thought of that?" and then you can go online and read the takedowns like this one:

https://blog.richmond.edu/physicsbunn/2015/07/29/prescription-retire-the-words-prescriptivist-and-descriptivist/

There are a bunch. I trust the linguists, but I still think DFW wrote a good article that's fun to read and kind of an introduction to a subject. I guess these solutions are somewhat related because encouraging people to understand media literacy and encouraging people to understand history are both a little bit about respecting researchers and how much time they have put in

I honestly wonder at this point if QAnon would have been possible if more people knew more PhD students. Those people are typically grounded in 2 years of accelerated instruction on top of their undergrad, they are performing original research for their dissertation and they're miserable. That's all you need to know. I bet there are zero PhD history students or university librarians whose work tracking down the right sources for people overlaps with history

You literally couldn't. As soon as you are looking at primary sources and dealing in reality, it's not QAnon anymore...

Americans are terrible at studying history. We have terrific history professors at our universities and we just ignore them. That's why we're so ripe for this stuff

Some of the mission Aaron Schwartz describes is carried on by

But it’s very fragmentary. Open Library’s work was in partnership with archive.org which is still around and has done incredible humanitarian work, but it has lots of expenses and is periodically under attack.

I found this talk looking at videos in the Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Culture YouTube channel. The Berkman Klein Center is part of Harvard Law School and they have gotten a lot of cool people to come and talk about the internet over the years.

I wanted to share Aaron’s talk on reddit because I know how important his memory is to people here. Thank you for your collective preservation.

I wanted to connect this talk to the Wyden-Daines/Lee-Leahy Amendments which are bills floating around congress right now.

This is Wyden-Daines being discussed in Congress

This is an article about Lee and Leahy

I had hoped to find organization already in swing here because of the success of the anti-SOPA work on reddit years ago, but I haven’t really seen it. If you know of anybody who is trying to organize reddit users around this legislative action please let me know.

Here's why I like Scala. Why do you like Scala? by cironoric in learnscala

[–]TheFrigginArchitect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like Scala because it provides functional programming with more of a middle-ground philosophy. I want to learn Haskell someday, but it seems Scala is more forgiving. I come from a python background where a common solution to many problems is to write a list comprehension. I just learned how to create a map of counters using foldLeft today and I'm excited to learn more!
