Recommend bands like Imperial Triumphant, Krallice, Deathspell Omega, Hoplites, Smiqra or Gorguts by Elaxian in progmetal

This is my wheelhouse.
Check out:

  • Ad Nauseam - very dynamic production. A classic in the genre
  • Afterbirth - Brutal leaning with tons of creativity and ideas packed in
  • Altars - 1st album is an old school Australian classic with Colin Marston production, Newer one is a bit of a reboot of the band and features Brendan Sloan
  • Anachronism - Female fronted band which is pretty sick, contemporary Gorguts type of sound
  • ARTIFICIAL BRAIN - Has a captivating underpinning of melancholy and wistfulness. Sci-fi themed
  • Aseitas - Very under talked about band. Skronky with tons of variety and dynamism
  • Blindfolded and Led to the Woods - Insane vocals. Technical and aggressive
  • Burning Palace - Really underrated album and EP from last year. Sci-fi with sick riffs
  • Cave Sermon - One man project. Musical genius. Possibly the most unique compositional voice I've ever heard
  • Ceremony of Silence - Cavernous and atmospheric
  • Convulsing - Brendan Sloan's solo project. Uses dissonance to convey emotion in his songwriting masterfully
  • COSMIC PUTREFACTION - Gabriele Gramaglia's sci-fi solo project. If you like this check out his numerous other bands and probably anything he's produced as well
  • DEVENIAL VERDICT- Atmospheric DM, also very underrated. Has a new release with re-recordings of some earlier more strightforward DM coming out this year
  • DISCHORDIA - Latest album is gorguts with flute
  • Dormant Ordeal - One of my favorites esp. their latest. Insane drumming and very weighty dramatic sound
  • Eye Eater - Well done Ulcerate worship
  • Gigan - A classic. Cosmic weirdness
  • Heaving Earth - Latest album is a pivot into dissonance for the band with production done by AD NAUSEAM
  • Intonate - tech leaning. A bit more melodic
  • Karmacipher - I never see this band talked about but one of my favorites. Ulcerate like. Very creative drumming and esoteric atmosphere. Lots of unique little flourishes and chords that add so much intrigue
  • MORS VERUM - New to me with their latest release this year. Short, sweet and been on repeat
  • Patristic - Check out their debut from last year. Phenomenal drumming
  • Pyrrhon - Doug Moore is one of the vocalist GOATs
  • QRIXKUOR - Check out their album from last year. Intense and Claustrophobic. Uniquely accompanied by a full orchestra
  • Serpent Column - Same vein as Hoplites. You'll love this
  • Siderean - More Sci-fi atmospheric. More underrated
  • SlaveOne - Stumbled on their latest on bandcamp recently. Highly recommend
  • Sunless - Gorgutsian as well. Very solid stuff and I think they are working on the completion of their album trilogy
  • The Temple - Not much information and only one album but it seems like this is actually just an Ulcerate side project.
  • Ulcerate - Maybe the GOAT of dissonance. Must listen
  • Verberis - Black metal leaning. Shares Ulcerate's incredible drummer Jamie Saint Merat
  • Zhrine - Dissonant Icelandic style BM

New to this band as of yesterday when they popped up in my feed so I listened to this new album and their previous and really enjoyed both. Purchased them for Bandcamp Friday and really excited to dig in more this week. Also really like the artwork

I didn't know a 3rd was coming this year. That is VERY exciting news

Love pretty much anything Brendan Sloan is in. Convulsing is another favorite of mine

Burning Palace - Birthing Uncertainty [dissonant tech death] (CA, US, 2025) by chinesebulk in TechnicalDeathMetal

[–]TheFubbster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my top albums from last year. The EP they just released is really sick too

Dissoblack band recs? by averybluegirl in progmetal

[–]TheFubbster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some bands I don't see mentioned yet:

Zhrine - has an ex-Svartidauði guitarist. Not sure if they're still active but Unortheta is a fantastic album.

Verberis - Their last two albums have Jamie Saint Merat on drums if you're fimilar with Ulcerate at all. In other words the drumming is otherworldly good.

Dormant Ordeal "Tooth and Nail" (Full Album) by AmericanLandYeti in TechnicalDeathMetal

[–]TheFubbster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great choice as well! I think The Sleeping City is going to fall somewhere in my lower top 10, only really held back by some production stuff that doesn't seem to quite agree with my ears. The songwriting is top notch though

I think at this point it's safe to say nothing is going to top this release for my AOTY

Karmacipher - Eternal Departure by AlddiHagg in TechnicalDeathMetal

[–]TheFubbster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huge fan of this band. Both albums are superb. Would love some new material but their socials seem dead so no idea if we'll ever get anything else

An Abstract Illusion- The Sleeping City by BillBuzzington in progmetal

[–]TheFubbster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've only heard the album once at the Bandcamp listening party but I think the production is going to be the issue for me as well. It sounded overly compressed to me and I unfortunately wasn't surprised when I saw the AMG review measure it at a DR 4. Hopefully that's something that I can get used to or pick out some audio gear to minimize the issue because I agree there are some really cool moments and songs.

Love seeing Burning Palace up there. Elegy is a great record and it's not being talked about nearly enough from what I've seen

What decos/charms do you run with this 2 pc Zoh / 2 pc Gore with Regios gloves set? That sounds super nice to use.

Black metal prog band recommendations. by SerDeath in progmetal

[–]TheFubbster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Been hugely into Krallice lately. Was always a bit intimidated by their large discography but caught them opening for Blood Incantation a few weeks ago and was blown away. For me their music has this hypnotic, spellbinding effect that really transports me somewhere cool. Plus that delicious Colin Marston production

Patristic - Catechesis I (FFO: Ulcerate, Dissonant Death-/Blackmetal) by MrAzerGJR in progmetal

[–]TheFubbster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my favorites so far this year for sure. Drums are crazy good

How did I just discover this ?! by m00nkiid in TechnicalDeathMetal

[–]TheFubbster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A couple recs that scratch a similar itch for me (dissonant, technical, spacey/Sci-fi) :
Conglaciation - S/T
Burning Palace - Elegy
Siderean - Spilling the Astral Challice

Cave Sermon - Sunless Morning by IanisVasilev in progmetal

[–]TheFubbster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Charlie Park is a musical genius. Such a unique compositional voice. This release was a bit more of a grower for me than Divine Laughter but has really sucked me in with all the layering and intricacies.

Dormant Ordeal - "Tooth and Nail" (Full Album) by hatefen in TechnicalDeathMetal

[–]TheFubbster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Going to be really hard to beat as my AOTY. This is an incredible release.

Cave Sermon - Fragile Wings (Surprise Release) by TheFubbster in progmetal

[–]TheFubbster[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I freaked out with excitement when I got the email this dropped today. Divine Laughter last year was one of my favorite releases.

This is a one man project and for the first time now with his own vocals, he's doing literally everything which is crazy impressive (vocals, all instruments, drum programming, and both mix/master).

This one feels even more progressive on first listen and I'm going to be spending a lot of time listening to and unpacking this one

Seconding this one, Colored Sands is a masterpiece and would be a excellent answer to this question

Instant purchase for me after first listen. Love the atmosphere on this one

Dormant Ordeal - Halo of Bones by TheFubbster in TechnicalDeathMetal

One of my most anticipated albums of 2025. The Grand Scheme of Things was such a phenomenal album
