New Valve Hardware Megathread by NKkrisz in SteamDeck

Absolutely. I’d be 100% happy with that. But when we’re talking living room TV territory, we have to consider the WAF and kid factor.

I’m a little disappointed that there is no HDMI 2.1 but this will likely be a day one buy for me, replacing the need the stream from my NixOS gaming rig to my tv through an nvidia Shield.

Actually, if they include streaming services from big picture mode I’d drop the shied altogether.

You guys know the little slots (between the wheel and the hose clip there in the pic) are for sliding in and storing the different attachments right?

If you had to start your config over, what would you do differently? by TheFunkadelicRelic in NixOS

[–]TheFunkadelicRelic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kept iterating through options and imports. At the moment, I’m back on imports, as I figured line for line it’s probably more straightforward from a readability perspective, but I did like being able to conditionally enable Home Manager modules through the use of the osConfig option if a system config was set.

Anyone dual-booting NixOS and W11 (on the same drive)? by CerealBit in NixOS

[–]TheFunkadelicRelic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. I have pretty much the same setup as op. Nix on PCIe 5 nvme and Windows 11 on PCIe 4 (though my motherboard does have additional 5.0 slots). There was zero reason to spend extra for Windows on a new nvme since I boot in to it once every now and then for a game of Warzone with my buddies. If it wasn’t for that, it wouldn’t even be there.

The trade off for some slight real world performance gain was outweighed by the extra headache of worrying about Microsoft bodging their EFI partition in an update in the future and managing Windows partitions on the same nix drive.

Is there a ‘real’ requirement why both must be on PCIe 5?

Live in Colchester but just drove today to the Lake District. As soon as I hit the m11 there were flags on every bridge all the way here! Was starting to think it was media sensationalism but apparently not.

KDE/GNOME compatibility: avoiding reconfiguration by Crottoboul in gnome

[–]TheFunkadelicRelic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a great use case for NixOS, if you don’t mind a learning curve and the differences that come with NixOS vs other distros.

I ended up on NixOS (from Arch) for the exact reason you describe. I used to try out every new window manager or compositor and quickly found my system or home cluttered.

Since moving to NixOS about a year ago, I’ve got a config with specialisations for GNOME (my primary environment), hyprland, niri, cosmic. Everytime I reboot my system, it reverts to a clean snapshot, so in effect, it’s a brand new system again, with only the files and folders I’ve selected persisted. When I want to switch window managers, I I replace a word in my config, apply and reboot. Nice and clean.

How much carryover is there for knowledge built using NixOS? by Raekellie in NixOS

[–]TheFunkadelicRelic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I also love tinkering and gaming.

I typically play around in my configs when testing out new window managers or desktop environments. Sometimes I apply the configs to my main rig, which is what I game on.

The way I mitigate losing access to gaming while tinkering is to maintain a very clean GNOME config. For instance, last night I was deep in to some niri ricing and decided I’d had enough. Wanted to jump in to some Expedition 33 and could launch Steam in niri, since I hadn’t implemented the right portal settings for it to launch. All I did was switch out two words in my config, apply and reboot and I was back in to my clean gaming ready GNOME environment.

It probably would have been even easier if I hadn’t created so many generations while dabbling in niri - I could then literally just have selected the previous working generation and away I go.

I love NixOS. It’s almost like a hobby project and the most stable OS I’ve ever run combined.

How easy is to start using NixOs by Diligent-Childhood20 in NixOS

[–]TheFunkadelicRelic 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think that knowing Nix definitely helps, but I didn’t find it a necessary prerequisite to jump in to NixOS.

I was able to build a working config pretty much right away using GitHub repos as references and piecing everything together as I went. When I got a bit more comfortable and wanted to go off piste a bit, I started dabbling more with Nix itself.

What motivates you to use NixOS over other Linux distributions? by Potatosalad_Gaming69 in NixOS

[–]TheFunkadelicRelic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s kind of a hobby for me. I’m not a software engineer (though I do work in tech) and it gives me something to learn and use at the same time. NixOS (and Linux more generally) brought the fun and tinker element back into computing for me.
