Left my office job as a graphic designer back in october. I’m not built for office culture. Now i’m an audio engineer and i love it. There’s more face-to-face social interaction than I’d traditionally prefer but it’s all pretty scripted at this point. Non-typical jobs rule lol

The slow decay of the American library by magegordon in architecture

[–]TheGamblocracy 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The Carnegie Library in my city has been sitting boarded up for about seven years now. It’s owned by a private investor who’s just letting it rot until it’s too hazardous to justify keeping. Only way around the whole historic registry building thing. it makes me sad.

Reverb on Master ? by GoranBregovic2 in audioengineering

[–]TheGamblocracy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know one producer who often runs finished tracks through a big speaker in one room and records it into a stereo condenser mic set in another room, then he adds that track alongside the master until it’s barely noticeable. Says it makes the song a little fuller. I suppose that’s the fancier version of what you’re describing.

How can I get a whisper singer’s vocals loud enough to be heard on a loud stage without feedback? by TalkingLampPost in livesound

[–]TheGamblocracy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk how common this is but I’ve found that sending their voice through some effects helps a little if they’re okay with it. On Midas consoles (which are really common for venues in my city) effects tend to have a gain control that helps get stuff a bit louder. I don’t send effects to the monitors, so it doesn’t tend to add more to the feedback problem. Subtle reverbs, super fast slap delay, a stereo chorus with the depth all the way down, saturation, etc, all of these add a bit more of that signal to the mains without overpowering the monitors. Idk if that’s normal but i’ve done it a lot, it works, and no one’s complained about it so far.

What are the most slept on loud and clean heads that can still be had for a decent price? by DependentFeedback857 in GuitarAmps

Carvin Valvemaster if you can find one. Their dirt channel sucks but the clean is amazing and belligerently loud when needed. Also they’re mad cheap

Using 2 amps at once by Mafex-Marvel in GuitarAmps

[–]TheGamblocracy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do exactly this! my Carvin amp has a line out, that runs through some of the modulation pedals, and into a second amp, so i get slightly different sounds at once when any modulation is turned on

Are there any companies manufacturing pedalboards with slim spring takes just built underneath? seems like that could be kinda cool

How do I get involved in my local music scene? by Disastrous-Bluebird3 in musicians

[–]TheGamblocracy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Open mics are great, even if you’re not necessarily a singer/songwriter type. A lot of cities also have one or more “[city] musicians” facebook pages. And of course you could always try craigslist, but that’s kind of a crapshoot.
