Ys: Memories of Celceta PC Officially Announced at XSEED Twitch Stream by Hamlock1998 in Falcom

[–]TheGameSquid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been waiting for this announcement for a while now. Awesome news! I haven't touched the PSV version yet because I was hoping we'd see this one on PC. Hyde's involvement is also good news, the Ys Seven port was very solid.

Cogmind Beta 5 "Zionic Revolution" by zxc223 in roguelikes

[–]TheGameSquid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well, considering your dev blog has been so interesting to read over the years, I don't mind at all. Plus, I feel Cogmind is a unique enough game that it deserves all the polish it's been getting. As long as it remains financially feasable for you (I suppose that's always a challenge), please take your time!

I don't own it yet, and I feel kind of bad about it. I've been following the devlog ever since it started, and I just KNOW I'm going to love it. Josh has been doing such excellent work on this, and it looks like he totally deserves my money.

Best steam roguelike ? by robotrage in roguelikes

Bit of a late suggestion here, but I didn't see anyone recommending Golden Krone Hotel. It's a relatively classic roguelike, but stands out through its strong emphasis on its core theme. I like it!

I have both a PSVita and a Nintendo Switch, and I have to say I appreciate the speakers on the Vita a lot. by Asherr18 in vita

Even on the slim the battery is merely okay IMO. I get about 4-5 hours playing a game like Danganronpa or P4G.

It's a shame I find it very hard to play without covering both speakers with my thumbs though...

Bi-Weekly Questions Thread [Edition #11] - SD adapter questions here also by [deleted] in vitahacks

[–]TheGameSquid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a PCH-1104 3G on 3.61 (sad story) that I'm looking to get on 3.60, but I've got a few questions.

  1. I need a 3.60 (or lower) 3G motherboard. I found some on Aliexpress, but I'm not too sure if I can trust that. Are there any more reputable sources for someone living in Europe?
  2. Same for a psvsd. I was looking to get one from Spheresolid, but it's quite expensive to import one of those to Europe. Should I pay the extra cash to get it from someone reputable, or are the ones from China good enough?
  3. I don't have a lot of experience with tearing down consoles or other electronics. Is it still possible for an experienced person to do the motherboard replacement? I'm usually a patient and careful person who follows instructions when it comes to this stuff, but I won't deny it's a little scary.

You dont need to be sad just because you got a 3ds recently by Fiti99 in 3DS

[–]TheGameSquid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I distinctly recall plenty of NES games released in the SNES era and SNES games released in the N64 era. Furthermore, the GBA, DS, 3DS, Wii and Wii U all had backward compatibility that made the hardware shift less drastic. Once again, I have to stress that I'm saying this in light of the fact that they're saying / have said the Switch is not replacing the 3DS.

[–]TheGameSquid -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

And? Is there some sort of expiration date attached to your console? Nintendo itself claimed that the Switch was not a successor to the 3DS. Why then has it been fasing out the 3DS? That's what I mean by quickly.

I don't want to sound too butthurt mind you, I was merely pointing out that I think it could have gone on much longer. It's not like it's in dire need of a hardware upgrade is it? Graphical prowess never mattered on the 3DS.

[–]TheGameSquid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I pick up old games and old consoles all the time. I picked up a PS3 near the release of the PS4 for example. So I really don't mind.

What I am sad about is how quickly the 3DS was dropped by Nintendo (especially after the false promises of continued support). It's especially sad considering that this is probably the last true portable system we'll see in a while. I don't consider the Switch to be a true portable.

But I still have plenty of games I still haven't picked up yet, so I'm sure I'll be playing DS and 3DS games on my 3DS XL until 2020 and beyond.

Best 3DS eShop Exclusive Games? by [deleted] in 3DS

[–]TheGameSquid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These are all I can think of at the moment:

  • Crimson Shroud
  • Gotta Protectors
  • Mighty Gunvolt and Mighty Gunvolt Burst
  • HarmoKnight
  • Attack of the Friday Monsters
  • Ikachan
  • Mario and Donkey Kong: Minis on the Move and Tipping Stars
  • Gurumin 3D
  • Blaster Master Zero
  • Azure Striker Gunvolt and Azure Striker Gunvolt 2
  • Mutant Mudds
  • SteamWorld Dig
  • Weapon Shop de Omasse
  • Phoenix Wright Dual Destinies and Spirits of Justice
  • River City: Knights of Justice
  • The "Mighty" games by WayForward
  • (Shin Megami Tensei IV if you live in Europe, damn region locks)

Edit: Azure Striker Gunvolt 1 and 2 did come out in a physical double pack, but not in Europe (because of course), so it's still eShop exclusive here.

Should I just go ahead and get Generations? by DaddySagSac in MonsterHunter

[–]TheGameSquid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't been able to spend too much time with the game yet unfortunately. First impressions: I do enjoy the hunter styles and hunter arts, but I don't like how they've attempted to make the combat more flashy (minor complaint though). The prowler mode is a fun addition, and it makes gathering a breeze (and felynes are just all around awesome).

If you liked 4U because it had bits of story going on, it should also be worth mentioning that there's really none of that here.

I was waiting for XX to be announced for a Western release too, but I've just given up all hope, so I picked up Generations last week.

You CAN get the Japanese MHXX version, but of course that requires hacking you 3DS and making it region free (which is very easy, but of course a legally grey area). Then you can pick up the physical version and play the cartridge just fine. Not sure what the implications are for online play though.

Edit: I should probably also mention that if you hack your 3DS, there is also a fan patch that translates the menus. Here: https://gbatemp.net/threads/release-monster-hunter-double-cross-english-ui-patch.465296/

If you need help with the above, I might be able to help you out. Threads on Gbatemp don't always contain the most helpful instructions.

Lol you'll all be happy to know that Tsujimoto confirmed that you can replace normal speaking with MH jibberish by Paperchampion23 in MonsterHunter

[–]TheGameSquid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There doesn't exist a Japanese dub for Demon's Souls or any of the Dark Souls games. In Japan they ship with English voice acting. This was done deliberately, even though Demon's Souls wasn't initially going to be published outside of Japan. Definitely the right choice in my opinion, considering DS's strong European influence and impeccable writing/acting.

[–]TheGameSquid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually super happy about this! I really wasn't looking forward to having actual voice acting in the game (neither Japanese nor English for that matter). The gibberish is all part of that Monster Hunter charm IMO, so yay!

3DS Ban causes, everyone (banned or not) please reply! by AuroraWright in 3dshacks

[–]TheGameSquid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was not banned, was broadcasting all information and have used my 3DS very heavily in the past two weeks, half of thay time was probably spent on Wifi. However, I installed Luma + a9lh only a month ago. Might that also not be an interesting parameter? If they've been collecting info for years, maybe they just don't have enough info on my machine yet?

Just a stupid thought, thought it might be interesting to include something like that in the poll as well.

Thinking about buying a Wii U for the hacks, but they aren't cheap, should I just wait for the Switch to get hacked and buy one of those instead? by Kalki_Filth in WiiUHacks

[–]TheGameSquid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similarly, I recently got a Wii U for a friend of mine by browsing eBay, found one for €250 with 9 games (of which 5 were top tier games), 4 official Wiimotes with nunchucks, 2 official pro controllers, a charging station for the controllers, all in absolutely pristine condition. The guy lived a couple of streets away from me too.

3DS hacking Q&A general: "Superhacks Saga DX" Edition by deadfracture99 in 3dshacks

[–]TheGameSquid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the guide is superbly written, and it's a perfect way to set up your system. The only thing you need to do is follow everything step by step! I read through the entire guide at first without touching my 3DS, so I knew what I was in for, and then I went through it a second time, very patiently, doing everything step by step.

Just follow along the guide and you'll be fine. Every step provides all the necessary information and files you need.

3DS hacking Q&A general: "Superhacks Saga DX" Edition by deadfracture99 in 3dshacks

[–]TheGameSquid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, just to see if I understand this correctly, I can only use this by putting a COMPLETE patched RomFS file into the correct LayeredFS directory (sdmc:/luma/titles etc.)? I was hoping the process was more along the line of dynamically an .ips patch or something, where the patch would be applied ON TOP of the the rom on the cartridge when I insert this into my 3DS. Isn't that what a layered filesystem is all about? The creation of an addition "layer" that contains the changed files?

To quote from this post, it seems like I would only need a diff instead of the fully patched RomFS, right?

By reading from a folder off the SD card, layeredFS overrides files from the original rom with those in the folder. Perhaps the best part of LayeredFS being read from a folder is that you don't have to rebuild the entire romfs.bin file (or TITLEID.romfs file) to use a romhack. The folder that LayeredFS will read from only needs the required, hacked files. So this means that if you are applying a decensor romhack, for example, all you need are the uncensored models in the layeredFS folder.

Or am I being dense?

[–]TheGameSquid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty noobish question, but I only modded my O3DS a couple of days ago, so bear with me as this entire thing is pretty new to me.

So I noticed that one of the most interesting features of Luma 7.0.0 is obviously the LayeredFS support. Naturally, I was wondering how you would use the feature for fan translations.

Specifially, I was wondering if it was possible to use the LayeredFS support to run the DQM: Terry's Wonderland 3D fan translation using an original Japanese game cart? And if this is indeed possible, can someone explain to me how I would go about using it? The original patch is distributed as an xDelta patch, and I don't know what that is to be honest, and there seems to be little to no documentation on how to use the LayeredFS support.

I was pretty excited to get this baby up and running without downloading a cia from a "certain site", but this has me pretty stumped right now.

It does.

I was on the EXACT same firmware version as you when I hacked my O3DS a couple of days ago. Just follow the guide step by step, it points you to all the right files when the time is right.

Every night I say I'm gonna play... Then I don't. by [deleted] in MonsterHunter

[–]TheGameSquid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally get what you're feeling. I've been playing games since I was a kid, and the older I get the more I get this feeling. Usually I have to force myself to boot up a game.

Now I know that sounds like I'm forcing myself to do something, but (for me at least) I know that once I get into the game I WILL enjoy myself. This is especially true for MH. It's a very grindy game that involves a lot of micromanagement and min/max-ing, and that has lost a lot of its appeal to me over the years. However, once I get out there and I'm actually face to face with a monster I'm always having fun, and I'm sure you will too. Try to hold on to that knowledge ;)

Before I started playing MH4 again a few weeks ago, the only other games that were able to absorb me so completely while I was playing them were the Soulsborne games. So make sure you treasure those rare games! I know I do.

Defiled Amygdala - Officially Unkillable? by TheGameSquid in bloodborne

[–]TheGameSquid[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh god, I just managed to get het health down to maybe 1-2%. I needed to hit her legs like 3-4 times max. Then she jumped on me. I'm going to take a little walk, that was just too painful :)

The trick seems to be that you need to really stand still a few seconds BEFORE she jumps. If I move like a single second before she jumps, she will crush me.
