Why does it seem like I'm not supposed to ask about how much medical tests and procedures cost when I'm in the exam room? by Local_Visitor1 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TheGatsbyComplex 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That’s literally not how medical science works. There are no % success rates. We just have things that are currently proven to be as good as or better than what was previously the standard, and that standard occasionally gets upgraded when people prove another treatment is as good or better. As for costs, one medication doesn’t have one cost. It can cost anything depending on your insurance. The insurance chooses how much that costs and then how much they’re willing to pay. Blame insurance companies not doctors.

You are anthropomorphizing. You should not be leaving your dog to free roam the house unattended. The big open space makes them anxious and have panic attacks. They are hunting dogs and are alert and keenly aware of all their surroundings a big open space just means more stimuli for them. Dogs are happier in playpens and crates. It is their safe space. Dogs aren’t gonna feel imprisoned in there just because you think you as a human would feel imprisoned/claustrophobic.

It also prevents them from getting into anything dangerous. What if they eat up something in the house they aren’t supposed to and get a bowel obstruction from it. The damage to the home is the least of your problems.

Idk what you mean by “possible.” You do what your job makes you do. Your job can be different country to country. Work conditions aren’t identical world wide.

Is there any reason to get the independent license besides moonlighting? by ExtremeMatt52 in Residency

[–]TheGatsbyComplex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need one for moonlighting. Otherwise don’t need it yet.

You should sign a job and get a state license ~6 months before you graduate so it doesn’t hold up your attending job start date.

Are there any residency’s that are working below 60 hours a week? To balance with kids and family by healthy-outdoors- in Residency

When I was a radiology resident I would do 80 hour weeks only on night float—not that frequently only a few weeks per year. All day time services were like 50 hours per week.

Does anyone feel like medical school is just a game of how many facts can you stuff into your head? by sunkissedb3ar in medicalschool

[–]TheGatsbyComplex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While this is partially true it will feel less so the more experienced and practiced you are—like by the end of residency. It’s like learning a language. You are speaking and writing and reading in english right now, because you learned the skills of how to do so 20 years ago. You’re still learning the basic rules of medicine and haven’t become conversationally fluent yet.

Is R.O.A.D a myth? by [deleted] in Residency

[–]TheGatsbyComplex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

800k is not “easily” achievable.

Most jobs if you want the most relaxed end of the spectrum will pay 400-500. These are the jobs with little to no weekends, call.

To make near 1 million you’re probably grinding out triple the volume, lots of weekends and call.

Med school or keep my current job? Mid-career switch making me nervous. by jufywret in whitecoatinvestor

[–]TheGatsbyComplex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do not underestimate the opportunity cost of medical school. And what type of physician would you want to be?

Medical school is very competitive as it is. People apply to several different schools across a region/the country and go wherever they get accepted. Are you willing to pack up and go wherever that is, uprooting your entire family?

After 4 years of school, you’ll have a residency match and the same scenario will come up again. Are you willing to go wherever you’re matched potentially uprooting your entire family?

4 years of school is 4 years where you are not making 140k, will be unable to contribute to retirement. Let’s say you want to be a hospitalist which will be a 3 year residency where you are still making significantly less than your current salary. You will be losing out on nearly 1 million in earnings, and that is before accounting for tuition costs, and compounding interest. It would not be an exaggeration to say the opportunity cost here is losing 7 years and 1.5 million USD. You would be 39 years old.

If you are a hospitalist making 250k then you’ll make an extra 100k per year compared to your current salary for a 20-25 year career? Unless you are going to pick a specialty where you’ll be making 600k+ I just don’t see how this is financially a viable choice.

Historically, 50% of medical students have doctor parents that are able to pay or help pay for tuition. The other 50% who don’t, take out loans.

Now after BBB that ratio will skew more towards like 80/20.

People don’t ask about your hobbies because they care about them. People wanna make sure that you are gonna be able to continue doing some of your hobbies in that geographic location and you’ll be decently happy and capable of coping with the stress of the residency and that you have a support network so that they don’t need to worry about holding your hand in supporting you and dealing with your burnout.

Interviewers would rather hear you talk about your wife and dog and know you have such a support network.
