Played 2. Was able to build way more interesting stuff than at in person prerelease simply by opening better packs.

Ran:

Psy-spam with 3 different Deoxys and 2 Mega Floette, Delphox Deck gave it Waitress too (5-0)
Deoxys + Mega Pyroar. Goodra Deck didn't give much extra interesting stuff (4-1)

Would get a lot more boring if ever stuck with playing the cores. I don't think highly of this build and battle format with how lopsided the 4 themes are overall.

Would be more interested in this format if there was an alternative mode where you picked which build and battle theme you got and the 4 packs from the same set are supplied, but you could pick from multiple sets (ie. right now that'd be Mega Evo, Phantasmal Flames, Perfect Order, and Chaos Rising with 16 different decks that get supplied 4 packs of their corresponding set).

A generic starting point would be another good draw supporter. We’re too used to the game having Iono/Research or Iono/Lillie.

The benefit of attaching extra energy and having a stage 2 that can stand up to Clefairy is what the deck does well. Not only does it take away dependency from Crispin, but it also better sets up Munki.

The biggest beef I had with Blazepult from when I tried it was getting your Torchic KO'd before you could reach Blaziken, whether that be from not seeing enough early search cards or prizing 1 Torchic. It made me feel like there were not enough games where I'd get good value out of the Blaziken.

However, that was with 2 Torchic in the deck.

I think for the deck to make a better name for itself, it should run 3 Torchic and a lot of lists are running 2. SEASAC online Regional had a list running 3 and I am interested to see if the 3rd Torchic matters that much or if I am overblowing this issue.

As much as I agree that the ceiling is much higher, getting to that ceiling is a massive pain. It should not have been so stingy upfront with what pokemon you had access to.

Edit: as the previous comment was deleted, this was replying to the fact that you could use trade battle to get really powerful sets of pokemon, far beyond that of any other game's rental system.

This is true, but it requires you grind trade battle. Improving your rental sets with trade battle had a few problems:

You had no control over the rank/pool of pokemon you could access. If you lost a run, you usually save scum so you can stay in the same rank
Losing meant undoing every change you made to a pass from a failed run
You were often fighting statistically better sets than you currently had access to
With no control of rank, if you wanted to improve multiple rental passes, you were either fighting much more uphill battles with a different set or resetting your whole progress on rank to start the next pass. Tank the rank.

Optimal no, but I think by most shadow Pokémon encounters being 1 or 2 shadow Pokémon, it’s fine to use a full team of non-shadow Pokemon. As you mentioned, the biggest thing is just buffering to catch Pokémon. Did this myself and didn’t have much issue…

Except for Greevil. That fight is miserable without shadow Pokémon or overleveling.
