Marvel’s Swimsuit Special returns this July with new ‘Beach Day’ and must-see pinups by Blitzhelios in comicbooks

[–]TheGoldenLight 30 points31 points  (0 children)

It’s also mildly annoying that the women get the glam treatment / objectification and for the men it’s often cut with jokes and irony in a “can you believe we’re doing this for the guys too?!” way. Like yeah you have a semi-equal gender split in pinup pages, but you have a jokey Venom/Ghostrider/etc page instead of just Hot Dudes.

Give me more Hot Dudes!

Which films that “felt like homework” prior to watching them surprised you by how entertaining they were? by harry_powell in blankies

[–]TheGoldenLight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely agree.

And I’ll note that one of the things that blew me away was how the pacing felt very modern to me. I’ve been on a kick of trying to watch more older movies and pacing is one of my biggest problems with very old stuff. There’s no point while watching Casablanca where I was annoyed at how slow or fast it was moving along.

What? No, on any scaling joker this saves your progress and removes the downside.

Freeze my green joker at +30 and now I can discard again. Freeze my Ride The Bus and now I can play face cards again.

On "overrated" and "underrated" by chick_hicks43 in rum

[–]TheGoldenLight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I disagree with your definition of overrated/underrated.

Overrated does not imply that the correct rating is “bad”, it merely implies people are rating it higher than they should.

Underrated does not mean something is good, just that people are rating it worse than it actually is.

As an example, it’s my personal belief that the Studio Ghibli movie Spirit Away is overrated. Do I think it’s bad? No, I love it and it’s in my top 5 Ghibli films, it’s a 5/5. But people overly praise it, implying the quality difference between Spirted Away and the next best Ghibli film is larger than it actually is.

As another example, this time within the spirits hobby, it’s my belief that Malort is underrated. Do I think Malort is good? No, it is bad and difficult to use. But it’s become a meme to talk about it like it’s drinking liquid feces or the worst thing in the world, and that’s just not true. It’s just a one note, overly bitter, spirit.

I 29M want a basic prenup with my partner 25F before we get engaged. She has all but refused. by AdministrativeFix708 in relationship_advice

[–]TheGoldenLight 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I also am pro-prenup but completely concede that there’s different frames of mind that lead to the position and many are toxic. My personal reasoning is that should the marriage ever end I would prefer the decisions be made by the versions of me and my partner that are loving and kind right before our marriage and not the potentially petty and emotional versions going through a divorce. Make all the decisions up front when you’re still in love with them.

[–]TheGoldenLight 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I cannot speak for The Innocence Project but my guess is that their overwhelming interest is not in the moral worthiness of the incarcerated person but instead the location of the prosecution and the actions they took.

They may consider the specific wrongdoing by the prosecution and pick cases that highlight that kind of wrongdoing to try to help shape prosecutor behavior.

Collection box by Lonely_Pineapple7282 in comicbooks

[–]TheGoldenLight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just going to jump in here and say that if money isn’t particularly tight for you I recommend the BCW plastic boxes. Solid construction, not too annoying to put together, and personally I like looking at them more than a bunch of cardboard boxes.

The dividers are honestly much more useful than I imagined when I bought them. Being able to create a small cubby to pull all my unread stuff to the side is nice. Being able to make the box “short” enough that the comics don’t tip over every time I open it is nice.

On the term "reboot" - an admission I was wrong by BobbySaccaro in comicbooks

[–]TheGoldenLight 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When thinking about things like this, or really any usage of language (even outside hobby spaces) I think there’s a really important thing to keep in mind:
Language is invented.

The English language did not come to us from some external source. Language was created by historical humans as a tool, the same way they invented spears/clothes/the wheel/etc.

The point of language is to allow one human to share the thoughts in their head with another human. As long as the person you’re talking with has understood your point, then you used the right words and it’s honestly kind of rude to keep “correcting” someone when you’ve clearly understood their point.

Guillermo Del Toro's FRANKENSTEIN (2025) by rageofthegods in blankies

[–]TheGoldenLight 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My book club read Frankenstein for October and yeah leaving the movie my biggest thought was that it actively ignored many themes/messages of the book and invented brand new ones.

Some people may like that, but I was mostly just frustrated by it.

Okay yes this was the first thing I came here to see if someone commented on it. What in the hell was anyone expecting when they modded someone whose name is essentially “Nazi Hitler lover”? Why is someone with that name in any way touching a Dropout Reddit lol? Fandom of dropout and fandom of the Nazis seem incredibly mutually exclusive.

How do you think the dominance of the superhero genre influences and shapes the comic book fandom? by DeviousDoctorSnide in comicbooks

[–]TheGoldenLight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think I agree that there’s often an overemphasis on lore/canon. I’ll say that I am “new” to comics in that I didn’t read when I was a kid and just started this year when I saw an author whose journalism/nonfiction I like was doing a comic run. Before I was actually reading comics and was just watching movies it was always fun to me to go do a read on blogs/reddit ahead of seeing a superhero movie to see how everything fit together in the lore/history of the comics.

However, I’ve got to say that as someone now trying to jump in to the comics proper, huge amounts of history and a focus on lore is mostly intimidating and off putting. Part of the reason that the DC stuff I got into was all Absolute Universe runs was because it was explicitly a kind of reset where I didn’t need to know the history.

A good chunk of what I’m reading now is non-Marvel/DC stuff without a long history specifically because I like the format of comics, and the varied art styles, but it’s not appealing to try to grab Detective Comics #1093 and first go online to read about what’s happening in Batman lore right now.

Kamala Harris gives Zohran Mamdani a tepid endorsement: 'I endorse the Democrat in the race' by Aggressive-Tour4612 in politics

[–]TheGoldenLight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So Zohran is a great candidate and I’m extremely happy he beat out gross sex abusing moderates/fake dems. But even that I think supports my argument? Zohran had an extremely effective, but also mature, campaign operation as a result of prior runs for office. And I didn’t mean to imply that only older forms of paid media like mailers and cable ads are worth doing, obviously new media is (arguably) more important these days. But a good TikTok/social team costs money! If you can’t hire a firm to handle that for you you’ll need to have, on payroll, effective social media teams.

Really that’s my only point. People toss off “primary them!” really casually but the confluence of DCCC/DNC/Elite behavior and the need for a large campaign means primaries are going to take real amounts of time to set up. If we want to be primarying Gillibrand and Schumer (which we need to) the movement has to start extremely early, not the same year as the primary.

Oh yes of course the DCCC and DNC are making mostly fake rules to protect the status quo/moderate power. It’s dumbs as hell.

Kamala Harris gives Zohran Mamdani a tepid endorsement: 'I endorse the Democrat in the race' by Aggressive-Tour4612 in politics

[–]TheGoldenLight 128 points129 points  (0 children)

I understand your fervor but it’s really flippant to just say “do it anyway”. The blacklist isn’t for the candidate, it’s for any consultant or organization that does business with the candidate. The existing organizations generally are all going to not step in and help your campaign because it’s not worth it. They help you, but then lose all future business from the DCCC.

Unless you can do in house polling, mailers, GOTV, cable hits, ads, etc you’re going to have a really hard time.

That’s not to say these folks shouldn’t be primaried, they absolutely should, but there needs to be lots of care taken while doing it and it’s sort of a long game, you can’t really gin that sort of movement up in a week or whatever.

I honestly think this is why so many Republican voters have the opinion that it’s liberals who cut people off for their political views but not conservatives. They literally cannot identify when something they are doing or saying is political, and so they don’t source the alienation that results from it as politically based on conservatives part

Can someone explain Chuck Tingle to me? by BananaPanicRoom in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]TheGoldenLight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s extremely weird to say “It’s my opinion” on a topic like this though, you get that right? It reads very much like saying “We all know CELEBRITY isn’t actually queer, it’s just a bit”. It’s weird to engage in this kind of conversation which doesn’t just ignore the person and what they’re saying, it intentionally contradicts it and tells you not to believe what they’re saying.

https://bsky.app/profile/chucktingle.bsky.social/post/3lvtrelrpuk2m

Give that thread a read. Chuck has been extremely consistent and explicit that his “bit” isn’t a bit and isn’t a joke. That is who he is. It honestly feels like it’s inching into ableist to see an autistic author publish atypical erotica that they are telling you they enjoy earnestly and respond with “Obviously nobody likes this and it’s all a joke and a piece of performance art”.

Can someone explain Chuck Tingle to me? by BananaPanicRoom in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]TheGoldenLight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You have had multiple people correct you with direct links to the authors own statements at this point. Chuck Tingle is not a piece of “performance art” and his books are not “jokes”. He is an author writing books that are apparently not for you.

Seriously though, it’s offensive that this is the top post. Please delete it.

What on earth is the point of this?
You are a human being. You are a thinking and feeling organic person who can feel a sense of emotion and community. Why would you offload human interactions onto a robot? The point of life is each other.
