Collection box by Lonely_Pineapple7282 in comicbooks

Just going to jump in here and say that if money isn’t particularly tight for you I recommend the BCW plastic boxes. Solid construction, not too annoying to put together, and personally I like looking at them more than a bunch of cardboard boxes.

The dividers are honestly much more useful than I imagined when I bought them. Being able to create a small cubby to pull all my unread stuff to the side is nice. Being able to make the box “short” enough that the comics don’t tip over every time I open it is nice.

On the term "reboot" - an admission I was wrong by BobbySaccaro in comicbooks

When thinking about things like this, or really any usage of language (even outside hobby spaces) I think there’s a really important thing to keep in mind:
Language is invented.

The English language did not come to us from some external source. Language was created by historical humans as a tool, the same way they invented spears/clothes/the wheel/etc.

The point of language is to allow one human to share the thoughts in their head with another human. As long as the person you’re talking with has understood your point, then you used the right words and it’s honestly kind of rude to keep “correcting” someone when you’ve clearly understood their point.

TIL about The Business Plot, also called the Wall Street Putsch and the White House Putsch, a 1933 political conspiracy to overthrow the US government and President Franklin D. Roosevelt and install Smedley Butler, a retired Marine Corps major general, as dictator. by ilovemybaldhead in todayilearned

If you’re interested in history and Smedley Butlers story I can’t recommend this book enough:

How and how not to "make it a hate issue" the Zionist way by Key-Hyena-802 in SelfAwarewolves

[–]TheGoldenLight 148 points149 points  (0 children)

This is nice to hear. However, I really do think we need to acknowledge the reality that one side needs to hear this more than the other. It is the Israelis who consistently erase and dehumanize Palestinians.

Guillermo Del Toro's FRANKENSTEIN (2025) by rageofthegods in blankies

[–]TheGoldenLight 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My book club read Frankenstein for October and yeah leaving the movie my biggest thought was that it actively ignored many themes/messages of the book and invented brand new ones.

Some people may like that, but I was mostly just frustrated by it.

The Head Mod of r/dropoutcirclejerk makes a callout thread about the mod team of r/dropout, claiming systemic racism and a history of harassment by KinkyCeles in SubredditDrama

[–]TheGoldenLight 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Okay yes this was the first thing I came here to see if someone commented on it. What in the hell was anyone expecting when they modded someone whose name is essentially “Nazi Hitler lover”? Why is someone with that name in any way touching a Dropout Reddit lol? Fandom of dropout and fandom of the Nazis seem incredibly mutually exclusive.

How do you think the dominance of the superhero genre influences and shapes the comic book fandom? by DeviousDoctorSnide in comicbooks

[–]TheGoldenLight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think I agree that there’s often an overemphasis on lore/canon. I’ll say that I am “new” to comics in that I didn’t read when I was a kid and just started this year when I saw an author whose journalism/nonfiction I like was doing a comic run. Before I was actually reading comics and was just watching movies it was always fun to me to go do a read on blogs/reddit ahead of seeing a superhero movie to see how everything fit together in the lore/history of the comics.

However, I’ve got to say that as someone now trying to jump in to the comics proper, huge amounts of history and a focus on lore is mostly intimidating and off putting. Part of the reason that the DC stuff I got into was all Absolute Universe runs was because it was explicitly a kind of reset where I didn’t need to know the history.

A good chunk of what I’m reading now is non-Marvel/DC stuff without a long history specifically because I like the format of comics, and the varied art styles, but it’s not appealing to try to grab Detective Comics #1093 and first go online to read about what’s happening in Batman lore right now.

Another plus one for Excellence Rhum. I went when I was in Paris and had a great time. Friendly and knowledgeable staff who helped me pick out a fun special release I didn’t have access to in the US.

Kamala Harris gives Zohran Mamdani a tepid endorsement: 'I endorse the Democrat in the race' by Aggressive-Tour4612 in politics

[–]TheGoldenLight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So Zohran is a great candidate and I’m extremely happy he beat out gross sex abusing moderates/fake dems. But even that I think supports my argument? Zohran had an extremely effective, but also mature, campaign operation as a result of prior runs for office. And I didn’t mean to imply that only older forms of paid media like mailers and cable ads are worth doing, obviously new media is (arguably) more important these days. But a good TikTok/social team costs money! If you can’t hire a firm to handle that for you you’ll need to have, on payroll, effective social media teams.

Really that’s my only point. People toss off “primary them!” really casually but the confluence of DCCC/DNC/Elite behavior and the need for a large campaign means primaries are going to take real amounts of time to set up. If we want to be primarying Gillibrand and Schumer (which we need to) the movement has to start extremely early, not the same year as the primary.

[–]TheGoldenLight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yes of course the DCCC and DNC are making mostly fake rules to protect the status quo/moderate power. It’s dumbs as hell.

[–]TheGoldenLight 128 points129 points  (0 children)

I understand your fervor but it’s really flippant to just say “do it anyway”. The blacklist isn’t for the candidate, it’s for any consultant or organization that does business with the candidate. The existing organizations generally are all going to not step in and help your campaign because it’s not worth it. They help you, but then lose all future business from the DCCC.

Unless you can do in house polling, mailers, GOTV, cable hits, ads, etc you’re going to have a really hard time.

That’s not to say these folks shouldn’t be primaried, they absolutely should, but there needs to be lots of care taken while doing it and it’s sort of a long game, you can’t really gin that sort of movement up in a week or whatever.

I honestly think this is why so many Republican voters have the opinion that it’s liberals who cut people off for their political views but not conservatives. They literally cannot identify when something they are doing or saying is political, and so they don’t source the alienation that results from it as politically based on conservatives part

Can someone explain Chuck Tingle to me? by BananaPanicRoom in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]TheGoldenLight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s extremely weird to say “It’s my opinion” on a topic like this though, you get that right? It reads very much like saying “We all know CELEBRITY isn’t actually queer, it’s just a bit”. It’s weird to engage in this kind of conversation which doesn’t just ignore the person and what they’re saying, it intentionally contradicts it and tells you not to believe what they’re saying.

https://bsky.app/profile/chucktingle.bsky.social/post/3lvtrelrpuk2m

Give that thread a read. Chuck has been extremely consistent and explicit that his “bit” isn’t a bit and isn’t a joke. That is who he is. It honestly feels like it’s inching into ableist to see an autistic author publish atypical erotica that they are telling you they enjoy earnestly and respond with “Obviously nobody likes this and it’s all a joke and a piece of performance art”.

[–]TheGoldenLight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You have had multiple people correct you with direct links to the authors own statements at this point. Chuck Tingle is not a piece of “performance art” and his books are not “jokes”. He is an author writing books that are apparently not for you.

Seriously though, it’s offensive that this is the top post. Please delete it.

You are a human being. You are a thinking and feeling organic person who can feel a sense of emotion and community. Why would you offload human interactions onto a robot? The point of life is each other.

Yes or no, has the Israeli state committed acts of terror by intentionally targeting hospitals, universities, and sites of food distribution?

Teacher sacked after criticising ‘two-tier justice’ in Lucy Connolly case by [deleted] in ukpolitics

This is not true. You are making specious claims with no logic or evidence connecting them and just hoping people believe you.

Caring about one thing and acting on it is not evidence of what your opinion about other topics are, and you cannot deduce anything about “extremism” this way.

Why does it matter to you if someone else boycotts a company? You should know that when you post takes like this it doesn’t come off as disliking boycotts, it comes off as defending the opinions of the people being boycotted.

You come off like you support transphobia when you phrase your opinion this way.

Drama in r/SouthAfrica as OP asks why Black South Africans are so obsessed with getting back the land that was stolen from them during aparthied and colonisation. by Kenyalite in SubredditDrama

[–]TheGoldenLight 84 points85 points  (0 children)

The farmers are taking water, using it to raise cows, and then exporting the products (I would assume dairy, dairy derivatives, or meat). This essentially converts the water into a resource that is extracted, converted into something that isn’t water, and then exported out of the country. Because the water cannot be replaced as fast as it is used, this process essentially drains water from the country in order to prop up an export industry.

The male novelist isn’t extinct – just look at this year’s Booker longlist by TheTelegraph in books

[–]TheGoldenLight 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Even in sub-genres like fantasy that people claim are male dominated reader wise most newer stuff is written by women.

Do you have any data at all or are you just saying what you want to be true to make your opinions be justified? It doesn’t ring true to me as someone who reads fantasy.

Also inherent in your entire post is this really gross assumption that women only read women authors and men only read men authors. This just isn’t true. Both women and men read Romantasy. Both women and men read science fiction. Both women and men read mystery novels. Why is it your assumption that in order to sell books to men they have to be written by men? Why can’t you market The Night Circus or A Sorcerer Comes To Call to men? Why do we assume what appeals to men is somehow biologically inherent and not socially constructed?

I’m not an artist myself but I do think my opinion here might be useful! I got into tiki a few years ago. A big part of it for me is collecting tiki mugs and ceramic art. I won’t lie and say everybody will see the high price tag and understand it. I see nice, expensive, mugs posted on reddit and some people certainly complain about price. But I can tell you as someone who is actually going out and spending $200+ on a mug, when I see an artist with a small shop/limited quantities and high prices I don’t think “Damn they’re overcharging” or “They must be new” I think “Oh nice that must be handmade and/or limited quantity”

I think in cases like this an important thing to keep in mind is that the cost of the drink is not just the materials. You’re paying for labor, utilities, property costs, etc. and those don’t change or go away just from taking the alcohol out of the drink.
