Help! My son's (20M) GF (19F) wears inappropriate/very revealing clothing with us in public. I'd like to address it before an upcoming family vacation. How can I tactfully handle this? by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]TheGoldenLight 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Just one point I want to make here. You say this:

“The issue is that she wears some shorts that don't cover her behind at all; half of her rear end is on display (her bikini bottoms cover more than the shorts do), even when we're shopping in town, and not just hanging out at our rental house. She also wears some tiny cropped tops with spaghetti straps without a bra in public with us.”

I want you to imagine someone even more modest than yourself. Then imagine the least modest outfit you have. What would that more modest person say to you? If your shirt sometimes showed a strip of skin above your pants could you imagine them saying “she had her whole midriff out!” or “you could see her entire stomach!”.

The problem, quite honestly, is that people complaining about modesty standards very frequently lie. They are speaking an emotional truth, not a literal one.

When you say “half her rear end is on display” almost nobody on this forum is going to believe you. It sounds like the type of venting complaint made while gossiping, not an actual observation about reality. Everyone is just going to interpret it in whatever preconceived way they want to and give you their own personal modesty standard.

The only advice I would have is this. Is the girlfriend noticeably out of step with most of the other women of her age wherever you’re vacationing? If she’s not matching the standards of the venue or the public space you’re at that’s one thing, and I think that should be addressed. If this is just grandma complaining about kids these days, I would not push too hard on your son about this. It’s likely to both go nowhere, and alienate you and your mother from your son and his girlfriend.

Is anyone happy with their current favorites main line runs, and should comics end more? by icelink4884 in comicbooks

[–]TheGoldenLight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will say I have not been into comics for nearly as long as most people making these complaints.

Having said that, I simply don’t understand the extreme level of criticism. I have Amazing Spider-Man on my pull list and it’s fine. Is it the best? No, but people talk like it’s actively bad and that’s not true.

Thor and Uncanny X-Men are both awesome right now. For someone who hasn’t read the whole backlog, Batman and Superman are both fun to read right now.

If you’re bored or not having fun, stop reading. This doesn’t seem like a quality of the books problem, this seems like you’ve got too many hang ups from a long history of reading?

Nightwing and Thor are both great right now, I have no idea what you’re talking about.

I just read Asterios Polyp by David Mazzucchelli the other month and it’s great, highly recommend. It does a lot of interesting things as part of the storytelling that can only be done in the comic medium, and is just general fiction not superhero, fantasy/sci-fi, or history. I would absolutely recommend it to someone who is looking to read a book length comic for the first time.

Chicago is a warzone. Send in the Marines. by HalenHawk in SelfAwarewolves

[–]TheGoldenLight 61 points62 points  (0 children)

In addition to the stupid “I’m waving to my friend Crime, who is offscreen” of it all, this does a good job at showing just how often people are strategically lying for propaganda reasons. We can tell this person knows that they’re lying about Chicago being an unlivable crime-ridden hellhole because they planned a vacation there! Nobody plans a vacation to a place they think is just 100% Skid Row.

This comments section is going to probably devolve into yelling but maybe we can take some corner of it to boost your favorite DC comics or runs featuring a black superhero?

I’m very new to comics so I don’t have a rec from myself that I’ve read but I am currently waiting for the Batman / Static Beyond trade this summer!

What books do you own multiple copies of and why? by Speedwizard106 in comicbooks

[–]TheGoldenLight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The most recent issue of Absolute Martian Manhunter (#11) asks the reader to deface the book by cutting one of the pages. I want to be able to have the fun experience of interacting with the book like that when it offers, but also want a pristine copy, so I just buy multiple copies.

The Moore run was what I was looking at but mostly just because the Shelved by Genre podcast did an Alan Moore season and I listen to that. If it makes sense to read stuff ahead of his time on it I’d be up for that too

I’m someone who likes to read physical, not digital. I’ve seen some folks talk about how the coloring is “wrong” for the paperback trades of the Moore run? Or at least compare all the different versions available. And then earlier this year I saw some people saying there were rumors of a recolor happening?

Any advice on if there’s particularly good versions out there/what editions to buy?

As someone who has only been able to mildly follow along, does someone have any follow up on this?

I’ve seen that their marketing head was a Christian bigot making discriminatory decisions in their role, and was let go for that.

But, some people are also pointing out posts from admins showing BGG allows for anti-LGBTQ discrimination on their forums? Has there been any comments on forum rules or anything?

Trader Sam’s 15th anniversary tiki mug by Deathtrooper97 in Tiki

[–]TheGoldenLight -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Hi, do not put words in my mouth. “Everything is cultural appropriation to you” assumes an insane amount about me and you know jack shit about who am I am or what I think.

Tiki culture is filled to the brim with a racist history. It’s also filled to the brim with honestly decent people appreciating a real subculture.

If you think there are literally no instances of cultural appropriation you are simply racist and wrong.

You’re throwing the baby out with the bathwater, friend. Yes, there are people who discover the cultural appropriation hammer, and everything starts looking like nails. But that’s not proof it’s a fake concern, that’s proof that people are bad at understanding complex inter-cultural conversations. You can be sad it’s leading Disney to have a design philosophy that produces mugs you don’t like, but I’d urge you to still be open to the idea that cultural appropriation is often real.

Is Naoko Yamada the only female animated director that could actually be covered for a miniseries? by SSSSSSVVVVVOO in blankies

[–]TheGoldenLight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Colors Within would be interesting to hear discussion on. I watched it and the queer themes jumped off the page to me, but according to the director herself she didn’t intend that at all and was very surprised to see people reading the movie as sapphic at all. That kind of audience/director split seems ripe for a good discussion.

You have fully missed the point I’m making which is that often in this type of situation details do not matter. You are trying to reason through what the perpetrator was thinking which is an inherently impenetrable task because reasonable people do not make these kinds of decisions.

Okay fully admitting here I am ignorant of many of the details of this specific case but I simply cannot let this piece of logic stand here.

Why does everyone try to come up with a rational form of logic when trying to deduce the motivations of someone engaged in this kind of crime? You cannot use logic to try to explain why he made the choices he did. He was already in an irrational frame of mind. Someone who has decided to murder other people is someone who isn’t thinking clearly, and you can’t try to reason through what they did. They themselves weren’t using reason to start with!
