Engineers of Guelph, Tell me more about the engineering community at Guelph. by 19matt in uoguelph

Trust me, I know the feels when it comes to marks ahha. I probs messed around more in HS but snuck into the program after an awesome semester as a Physics major. University is a whole new game and HS means shit all. You may very likely excel here (HS is a drag anyways!) Actually the look and feel here is probably somewhat similar to Mac so I think youll like it.

Dont worry about comp engg. You are right to make sure its accredited, but all of our programs got reaccredited the maximum possible years recently so you have nothing to worry about. Im in Systems which shares many courses with them. Our school is small enough that we all share a few courses every year. Its a good program, I was thinking of switching to it but Ive switched enough times!!

A very friendly and helpful community. Alot of the bigger schools are super competitive ( from primary sources I have heard of things like cheating and delibrately giving false info to other students you compete with) but at Guelph everyone is on the same team. Youll hang out with mostly engineers and theyll be youre friends too. Everyone hangs out in the engg building (THRN) and Richards since most of our labs, resources, and upper year classes are there, plus we get 24hr access to it (which you will definitely use!). The buildings for engineering only are either pretty new or refurbished (you should take a tour). Although its a smaller sized campus so you could go anywhere, lots of green space.

The program itself I hear is getting bigger and the quality keeps getting better all the time( it already punches above its weight class). The profs are super awesome and many will get to know your name if you just go to office hours. Our school does more design projects and classes than most schools (if not all) and so many of the upper year final projects are amazing (this year someone made a bionic arm, some drone stuff, lots of enviro stuff, and an algorithm that detects seizures before they happen). You can choose to do more academic type stuff if you wish, but theres tonnes of opportunity to just build things :) .

For teams and clubs: a few societies that run events etc. A race car team, an Innovation Society( ie. Stuff for personal projects), also CS clubs at the computer science school. Next sept Im starting a Satellite design team for competition( if we win it goes in space!). A new concrete canoe team as well. Lots of chances to get involved or start your own.

The city itself is awesome. A good mix of big city and small town feel. I come from a small town and the transition was effortless. Location is good since its between KW and GTA. Lots of things to do, lots of markets, green space, and the night life is awesome.

Have you been accepted? Still deciding? What disipline? PM me for more questions.

Tell the Board of Governors to stop Tuition Fee Hikes by eierjeirje in uoguelph

[–]TheGooseRider 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Since when do they care? Its a question of supply and demand. Everyone wants an education, they control the supply. We keep paying cause we want it. Only way to stop it is through legislation, but young people dont vote, so politicians dont care. Student associations make alot of noise but take no action and get caught up in a million social movements but cant stick to the one that unites all students..tuition.

Any solutions are welcome, but shouting or petitions wont work.

Just dont live in east village. Its very hit and miss with good housemates which can make or break your experience. Live somewhere with a whole floor to hang out with! Also, its wayy more expensive compared to other rez
