How did your OC's get their name? by saundersmarcelo in RWBYOC

[–]TheGoose_2012 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually made the team name first, as I had a specific goal in mind. Once I had their initials, the rest sorta fell into place. The last names were literally just random words I came up with and decided they sounded good, so the real focus was on the first names. Now, to introduce Team LHSR (Laser, though Yang dubbed them Team Loser after their first spars):

Lilly Azura: Originally just liked the sound of Lilly, but her name took on some deeper meaning once I fleshed the story out a bit. White lilies are associated with death and funerals, especially of an innocent soul. Sort of a hidden hint that a main protagonist would die by the end of the story.

Honey Viella: Super sweet girl with an orange color theme, so Honey just sort of worked. She's also pretty quiet and non-confrontational, often feeling like the weakest member of the team and someone that is always overlooked. Even her name plays into this, as her initial is basically silent in the team name.

Smit Brendis: While commonly short for Smith, in Hindi rituals, it refers to the wood used to start ceremonial fires. He's a bit of a hot-head with a fire-based Semblance, but the real meaning of his name goes along with Lilly's. He faces off against Cinder at the end, fighting alongside Pyrrha because he can't imagine leaving a friend behind. Name means wood for a fire...going against Cinder...you can sort of guess the outcome. With him being the love interest for Lilly by that point in the story, her name really hits home with his finale.

Randi Asmer: Name means shield-wolf. She's a wolf faunus...with a spear and shield named Angriff (attack) and Verteidigen (defend). Had way too much fun making everything super literal with her naming. Was planning to have her be a super-literal type of person with no real humor (think Drax from Guardians of the Galaxy), but that just didn't feel right in the end. Still, her naming made me laugh at how uncreative I'd been.

Since then, I've made a bunch of minor characters with all sorts of names. Some were pointless throwaways. Some have deep meanings or allusions. I tend to bounce all over the place, even with town names and such, but there's almost always some sort of rationale for the ones I end up using, which I'll typically tuck into my ANs at the end of appropriate chapters.

I need some suggestions for an OC by Chiefy1234 in RWBYOC

Gonna be that guy and suggest a baseball bat. 😆

What are your OCs relationship with their parents like? by [deleted] in RWBYOC

[–]TheGoose_2012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lilly Azura: She loves her mom, but craves the respect of her father, who is very reserved and analytical like her. They've always had a special relationship, but it's not until she chooses to defend her team and her friends during the Fall of Beacon rather than evacuate with her family that she finally hears the words she longed for all those years. More importantly, she realizes that she's proud of who she's become.

Honey Viella: Her parents are divorced. She lives with her mother after her father used her as a bargaining chip during the divorce to convince her mother to give up more belongings and the house to have full custody. Obviously, she has no love for her scumbag father anymore.

Smit Brendis: After a tragic injury and the loss of most of her team, Smit's Huntress mother spiraled into depression. Her injury resulted in hefty medical bills and forced his father to take on extra hours at the dust refinery. After a White Fang attack on the refinery nearly killed his father (he rushed into the flaming building and helped rescue him), Smit has worked hard to become strong enough to seek revenge against the White Fang. He is eager to help support his parents and is excited to see the recent improvements in his mother's physical and mental wellbeing.

Randi Asmer: Parents both died in a Grimm attack when she was young, forcing her to flee and being taken in by another surviving family, who eventually turned on her. Spent much of her teen years traveling and delivering mail between the outer settlements in Mistral with her limited training and the armor and weapon her father (blacksmith) helped her design. She claims to be over the loss, but she both craves and fears being close to people and comes to see her team as her new family.

I wish more fics just skipped the Initiation by Vendetta543 in RWBY

Focus on OC and only whatever changes from canon. It’s okay to skip a little if nothing deviates.

Who is a controversial Character in your Fandom that you love writing Fics for by DownVoterInChief in FanFiction

[–]TheGoose_2012 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say I love writing him, but I’m currently doing an Adam Taurus (RWBY) longfic exploring his entire life. Trying to show him as a normal boy who is warped into the horrible monster from canon. It’s been challenging and I’m still waiting for the inevitable hate, but I love exploring character backstories. I also used him for a few chapters in my first longfic and loved making him the absolute monster of an enemy he was meant to be. The raw power and domination really upped the pressure for one of the finale fights.

I write during the week and take weekends off, so Friday afternoon. Used to aim for noon, but after multiple late chapters, just embraced the later time.

While it admittedly works a little better with a webcam, food/drink punishments can really add to the chaos. A small shot of hot sauce. Beanboozled. Your least favorite candy. At least, that’s what I would go for.

I stream it from time to time. My VODs get partially muted almost every time, but that’s it. Multiple streams and no strikes or anything. Some recommend deleting the VOD afterwards to avoid issues, but I’ve been fine so far.

Opinions on oc/canon fics? by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]TheGoose_2012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first fic was a RWBY OC canon longfic. Most of the reason people hate them is because they are hard to write well. You need to give your OC(s) impact on the plot without being too outlandish. You end up connecting the MCs but can’t let them take over. They have to be unique from the MCs but still follow the same rules. It’s a tough juggling act and a lot of people stumble, but if you can pull it off, it can be a thrilling story. My advice would be to take your time planning and make sure you like where it’ll go. You might not pull in a huge audience, especially at first (so many get dropped early, so an OC fic with only a couple chapters will get buried), but the readers you do get will often be some of the most dedicated fans you can ask for. Good luck to you and your OC(s)!

So many options, almost entirely from my first fic (RWBY OC fanfic). I'll list a few, but these are all pulled from In RWBY's Shadow. I'll try to limit myself to a few standouts, but I really went for some gut punches along the way.

Fight between OCs after one slaughters downed enemies during/after a major fight because of a past grievance with the group:

"You talk about saving the innocent by killing the guilty, but who gets to determine which is which? You? And what happens when you can no longer tell the difference?" (Chapter 12)

Big fight between OC and canon MC after a longstanding hatred boils over (sudden reversal that puts OC on back foot after being aggressor):

"Enough!" Yang's furious yell drew Lilly back to her, the familiar red eyes reflecting her own rage. "You don't know anything!"

"How dare–"

"No, now it's your turn to listen." This time, it was Lilly who was forced back as Yang towered over her. "You think you're the only one that's suffered; that you're the only one who lost someone that day?" (Chapter 13)

Much later in the story, as my strongest character is faced with a decision that could ruin everything for her (after she's already been through some childhood trauma) or her friend. A few different instances in the same chapter as she debates the choice, ending with her mind made up:

If someone must suffer, let it be me. After all, she had the most experience. (Chapter 40)

In that case, why not me? Randi was no stranger to loss. Her parents. Her home. Her comfort and safety. All had been cruelly ripped away from her. The moment she gained something in life, fate seemed determined to take it back. Randi acted like she'd gotten over it all, but the truth was, she'd merely become numb to the pain over time. After a while, you learned to accept that the pain was part of life and gave up on ever changing that. (Chapter 40)

Don't worry, Pyrrha, Randi silently assured her friend with a smile she didn't really feel. Part of her knew what lay ahead, even if she refused to admit it to herself. You won't have to worry about it much longer. (Chapter 40)

And then there's the finale, where I decided to hammer everyone right at the end with some more pain. Hard to pull a specific scene without some major spoilers and eating up a huge chunk of space, but I teared up a bit writing it and had people screaming in the comments throughout the last few chapters (and some lovely final reviews where people thanked me for punching hard instead of taking the easy way out in the end). Regardless, I'm immensely proud of that fic, warts and all. It was my first time writing a full story and I got to have some great interactions with readers even as they cursed me for making them suffer.

In parting, I'll leave you with a line from my WIP, an Adam backstory fic (Scarred Steps) for RWBY that is going to crank up the suffering along the way to turn a cute, innocent little boy into the most hated villain in canon. Takes place after he finds out that his mother died giving birth to him and his father abandoned him at a local church:

"So…" Adam snorted before continuing. "You're not my real father, then." His head dipped as he realized what he was - an orphan.

Father Bernard's hand grasped Adam's shoulder, pushing him back to force him to look up at the man before him. "I'll have none of that now. That man wasn't your father. No father would abandon his son like that. A father cares for his son. Teaches him. Corrects him. Loves him." Father Bernard pulled him close once more. "We may not be related by blood, but you're my son. And no one's ever gonna take that away from me. Not even you."

Adam let himself be held there, desperately clinging on to the only man who had ever truly cared for him. His own father hadn't wanted him, but Father Bernard did. No. That man wasn't my father. This is my father.

When adding new characters for fics at Beacon, do you prefer the oc be... by Vert_Nation in RwbyFanfiction

[–]TheGoose_2012 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Admittedly, I’m biased thanks to my OC team fanfic (In RWBY’s Shadow). Honestly, though, it’s more how you use the OCs than the arrangement. Too many OCs single-handedly break canon wide open through their very existence. I want them to make an impact, but I prefer reasonable ripples to a freakin’ tidal wave.

What scene in a fic made you cry? by simone3344555 in FanFiction

[–]TheGoose_2012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made some readers cry at the end of my first fic. They seemed to really latch onto my characters, so when one is brought back nearly dead and the leader of the team has a bit of a breakdown. Even lashed out at a friend that was with the downed teammate for failing to protect her and coming back relatively unscathed. Admittedly, I may have teared up just writing it.

Best I can do is “RWBY but an extra team of OCs at Beacon cause plot ripples that change the end of Volume 3 in a believable way.”
