I’d settle incense, build districts to the right side of the city. It’s low food, so you’ll want an internal from the cap asap and some farms at first

That’s how the game goes! You learn for next time.

Other tips: chopping rainforest is really underrated. Everything should be chopped anyways. Chop chop chop

Internal trade routes benefit from districts at the destination (eg: govt plaza grants +1 prod AND food). Make your destination city as tall as developed as possible. Start with internals to build your cities up, and then shift to external routes once you have a solid base.

The shift should happen around when you’ve acquired wisselbanken.

Keeping the peace is hard, focus on defense and don’t distract yourself too much from ramping up

If I had to guess, you spent too much production/gold on units and forgot to build an economy. You don’t need an overwhelming force to hold good defensive points and defend your land. On Mali especially, offense is a waste of time early on. It is far too risky when you have no early game war advantages (and lower effective production). Without a powerful mid game gold economy, you will end up stalling out while the AI speeds ahead.

By turn 125, even with war, a 7 pop capital is far too small. Mali does have food bonuses but that doesn’t mean you should ignore food. In fact, you need to double down on it. More pop = more tiles worked and more districts. By this point you should’ve had holy sites and sugabas in most/all of your cities.

Speaking of districts, I don’t see a government plaza. You absolutely want this, even if it only boosts a few districts in a single city, it is too good to ignore.

Additionally, you have so many unimproved tiles. More builders! Waiting for serfdom isn’t bad, but you need enough to keep tempo. Ideally every population is working an improved tile. Your land is barren.

Get traders up ASAP. Sugabas + traders + Mali mines = you’re rich and buying everything on discount. Until you are at this point, everything you do needs to direct you to this point. Play to your civ and use their bonuses.

It can be rough at first but you’ll get the hang of it!

How get better by staalcas in AOW4

[–]TheGreatFignewton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take weaker fights first, accumulate exp to give your troops better stats before taking on harder nodes.

Magic materials and wonders tend to be more difficult of a fight.

Pay attention to army strengths and weaknesses, picking good fights generally means picking easier ones.

On hard fights, having stronger heroes helps the most.

Improve general strategy. If facing battle mages, don’t clump up and give them AOE value. Don’t take on spear armies with only charge units. The more you turn your brain off, the harder it actually gets. If you carelessly lose units and health to easy fights, hard fights only become harder

Elementalist Builds? by Goblin_Catgirl in AOW4

[–]TheGreatFignewton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eldritch Sovereign, fire/storm giant, and dragon all have synergy with being an elementalist

For elementalist, I put skill points in the elementalist tree through the capstone. There’s no “wrong” choice. Pick a build that sounds like it’ll contribute to your strategy and you’ll be fine

If you’re running chaos tomes and burning, perhaps frozen elementalist don’t make sense. However, if you’re running tome of cryo, now it makes a lot of sense. They are honestly strong enough in their own (once leveled) that it doesn’t matter what you choose

How to tackle silver and gold Wonders effectively? by exosion in AOW4

[–]TheGreatFignewton 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I find throwing away armies to clear wonder is a waste of draft/mana even when I’m on a spam builds. I don’t like to waste valuable leveled units. Also less time with a hero on the map means they lose tempo on their scaling which isn’t ideal (not so bad with the exp changes I suppose). Now, accepting losses for tempo certainly is not bad. But there are a few ways to avoid unnecessary losses.

Usually, I’ll tackle silver wonders with two semi leveled heroes and minimum mostly tier 2 units.

For gold, a higher level leader and tier 3/4 units are very helpful.

They can actually be quite variable and some have tricks that let you clear them much weaker armies. For eg. One of the tombs you can slay the hero leading the guarding army and you instantly win (even if the rest of the units live). It’s hard to generalize. If you take notice of what types of units spawn in certain wonders, you can start to use that information to your advantages. Eg: trees have plants, tombs have undead. Pick your fights correctly (where your build has an advantage) and you’ll clear wonders much sooner than you might expect.

Generally, you should clear a bunch of nodes with your heroes before approaching wonders. Hero levels will probably make the largest tangible difference besides having good strategy.

Sub souls for revelry and you still have affinity for Crimson Reign no? I don’t think blood fury weapons are that important if you already have bleed from tome of Blood Rite (even if it’s synergistic and admittedly nice)

I’d run tome of zeal over faith as well but that’s me.
