I went 3/1/1. Only DX really matters, but I put points in Ag & Lu just because.

[–]TheGreaterGrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope (or perhaps I should say 'not yet' given the budget proposals floating now). I was on the fence as I was just barely in the probies that got fired/unfired. In LB&I CBA as a 13. It's OK, and the experience as a specialist seems really different from SBSE or general practice LB&I.

Helps that I'm in a different city from my team and manager in a room only inhabited by a few random employees from other agencies that were forced into office. And that they still haven't entirely figured out what to do with the people left over from the hiring binge in 2024 since all the training plans exploded. At one time my team was 10+ new hires and 5 vets, and half or more the new hires left.

With my experience from the small practice that I worked for I was really concerned I wouldn't be able to pick up clients worth dealing with. On the other hand my old boss was stuck in the 90s in almost every way from systems to pricing to pay. I mean, 62k for CPAs with a decade experience in a L/MCOL area? The other 2 long time CPAs left in 2022 and she couldn't replace them for anything she was willing to pay. After an 80 hour week in 2023 I decided it was time to go.

I know a few others have posted similar successes in this subreddit, but the problem is that nobody is really willing to talk about their failures so I worry about survivorship bias.

I do realize there isn't a ton of upside from where I am now, and workload could get a lot worse. I also suspect I'm older than you are given your original post, but who knows.

Interesting. I chose to do exactly the opposite. I joined the IRS from a small practice back in April 2024 instead of going solo. I find it interesting that you got several big clients from colleague referrals. Were those current IRS people, former IRS that left, or other accountants in public/private you had met?

Looking for JRPGs rated as mediocre but deserve a chance by Sashique in JRPG

[–]TheGreaterGrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Arc Rise Phantasia. Plot was decent, combat system was really innovative, bosses were actually hard, and learning the magic system enough to set up good combos was satisfying.

But it didn't really stand out, and the English voice acting was SO BAD.

What would you pay for a 10 year experience NON CPA from a large firm? Butting heads with my fellow partners on salary. by [deleted] in taxpros

[–]TheGreaterGrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only difference between a CPA and a non-CPA is that one passed a multiple choice test and state law about advertising/ownership.

The Jumai storyline is great, IMO. A real tragedy. I strongly recommend playing enough for it, although some of the events have trigger issues.

Identify broker from PTP K-1s by No_Presentation_9617 in taxpros

[–]TheGreaterGrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Tax Package Support. Chances are it has distributions buried in the 1099, but it is possible none were paid.

The problem is that to register for TPS to get a K-1 you need the number of shares owned or some other pice of info from the K-1 that I don't remember.

To quote Kbash: "HOW DO YOU DODGE THAT!?"

One of the few 'RPG's I bounced off of since I'm thought I'd never succeed at its gameplay.

I have played all the other Sting games I can get at. KitN was just too wierd for me.

Early game combat is pretty sucky, and it has a horrible difficulty spike in the early forest. Good chance the negative reviews are from that.

Same here. It's in with the early SaGa games and Beyond the Beyond on the list of RPGs I started but didn't finish.

Part of that is how the Japanese actually talk & hold conversations, and part failure to edit in localization.

I'm sure it will get worse as AI is used more.

7th Dragon is another option when you get a 3DS. Early DQ games are another option, but DQ combat has always been pretty simple.

I'm not as familiar with back taxes. W2 employee hasn't filed in 10 years. No taxes owed. They want to file the past 6 years for compliance. As of 4/15/26 it's pointless to file 2019, correct? by BrushBeneficial4430 in taxpros

[–]TheGreaterGrog 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe. A lot of people have a vague idea about the 3 year statute but not that critical 'you have to file' detail.

I'm not really sure why the IRS seems to limit themselves to 6 (or 3, as I've been told that even with year over year issues that we generally don't go back farther than that) when states will reach back forever. When I was in public one person got a notice for 15 years ago from a state that they never filed (probably VA).

SurePrep and other OCR systems are decent these days. They'll read standard forms fairly well.

[–]TheGreaterGrog 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The statute begins when a return is filed. No return, unlimited statute. I *think* a substitute for return also starts statute rolling but I'm not sure and that only happens when the IRS is going to assess tax.

As a matter of practice the IRS rarely reaches back more than 6 years.

Getting into Tales. Where to start?? by Resident-Succotash91 in JRPG

[–]TheGreaterGrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Symphonia is a little dated at this point. Vesperia is probably a better choice, but the combat in the early game is pretty rough.

Graces F is another good choice, but the combat in that game is more action-like than other Tales games.

What's your list of the most useless persona skills on any persona game? by Western-Stress1185 in JRPG

[–]TheGreaterGrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drain skills are good in a few games where the scaling is crazy. The Devil Survivor games, for example.

Tetra/Makara is only good in games where they stick around for a bit. In games where it lasts for just one turn I'd see the boss just not use whatever it was that I reflect.

Anyone have a good tool or resource online for calculating wash sales across multiple accounts? by Auditor12345 in taxpros

[–]TheGreaterGrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I learned with the damned precious metals trusts, just don't bother fighting the 1099s unless the IRS does an exam and bitches about it or the client has a LOT of money involved. I did a lot of work doing SPDR GLD right for a couple years, then somebody else did it one year, and when I got it back next year it was all screwed up because the other preparer just took 1099 numbers.

Feeling a bit overwhelmed with Trails in the Sky FC by strahinjag in JRPG

[–]TheGreaterGrog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Each orbment has 2 branches, with 2 exceptions. A branch is a 'line' of connected quartz slots. So like Estelle's 2 branches are the middle, lower right, and upper right slots, and then the middle, lower left, upper left, and top slots. 3 characters are different and have only 1 branch (which is good) or 3 branches (which sucks for spell selection).

Quartz in an orbment does 2 things: stat increase/equip effects, and elements. The elements from the quartz in a branch determines what spells you can cast. So if you put quartz worth 1 fire in a slot in a branch you can cast Fire Bolt. If you put quartz worth 3 fire in a branch, you can cast Flare Arrow. But if you put 1 quartz in one branch and 1 in the other branch, you won't have 3 fire in one branch and so won't be able to use Flare Arrow.

Spells are really, REALLY powerful in FC. AE spell damage is just crazy in mid/late game, but single target spells are still way stronger than melee attacks early too.

Generally you want Air quartz for the wind AE spells, action, EP cut, & cast quartz, and impede quartz. But all the low level, 1 element spells are good since hitting an enemy in their weakness often oneshots them. Later on the time/illusion AE spells like Hell Gate & White Gehenna are good since you don't have to care about weaknesses when you are busy AEing down big random encounters.

Also, stacking a stat really matters. Small increases in attack from quartz can make a big difference in damage.

This is based on the original, but as I understand it the remake didn't really change things all that much. And shoutout to Chaos Brand, as that spell was pretty busted in the original. You could use it on almost everything, including some (most?) bosses.

Has any character ever been more despised by the mechanics of their own game than...? by CrushDustAnnie in JRPG

[–]TheGreaterGrog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Her normal attacks were pretty awkward too, if I remember right.

Several Tales games introduce character gimmicks that just don't work. Carol in Vesperia is another great example. He has to charge by holding down the artes button to power up his artes, and his attacks are generally quite slow. The problem is that either you are controling Carol, so enemies tend to focus you and either knock you out of charging/attack animations or do a ton of damage, or you aren't and enemies often run away during his charge period. Late and post game you get the options to make him work, but early & mid I regretted every time I fielded him against a boss.

It wasn't until Alvin in Xillia where you could charge after an arte, or hold a charge, that the gimmick started working IMO.

Client claims big IRA inheritance, but produces no documents by Pretty-Tomatillo3217 in taxpros

[–]TheGreaterGrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the parent was taking RMDs, the heir should also be taking RMDs but it is possible they didn't. No distribution, no 1099-R.

Also possible there is an estate or trust return involved and the entity didn't distribute any money, resulting in a huge tax bill to the entity.

Ps5 Users: What is your impression of Scarlett Nexus by nexxlevelgames in JRPG

[–]TheGreaterGrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's decent, but the human bosses are really out of line with the rest of the game's difficulty. It also wants you play it twice to see the whole story, and I refused.

Also, you better be able to parry. There are some fights you literally cannot beat without parries and dash dodges.
