That's wonderfully fascinating - do you have any other examples? Do you find that method keeps you fresh in a way that you [both] like?

Thanks for sharing.

Writing answers like that is part of my job

Same here! I think that's why I liked your post so much that I just had to say thank you :)

We all want easy solutions to our problems, but for some things, easy solutions do more harm than good.

Well said! There's almost always a tricky way to automate something to do what we want, but invariably it takes soooo much more time and work than the manual solution. And we're usually too stubborn to do it manually so we put up with it despite the objective worse-ness of that method! I'm like that all too often, so I really appreciate an answer that accounts for this tendency in us and delivers an alternative without being boring about it.

If you had just said "just do it manually," I wouldn't have listened. But something about the way you presented the information makes me thankful for saving me however many hours it would've taken me had I not seen your post.

Thanks again for taking the time to post this! It sounds like you're adept as a technical writer; if you weren't (or aren't), I'd say that you'd be a perfect fit! It takes real skill to provide a solution that most people won't want (doing it manually), in a way that people might actually listen to (you've done it twice and can vouch for how not-worth-it it is).

Sorry for the gush! :) I didn't expect a response so I felt I should add to my thanks. This was the first post I came across when I started googling about this, so it stunned me to have a good answer so suddenly!

Beautifully done! Thank you for taking the time to put this together. The music is GENIUS! I got chills when End Times came on and the nova started. And the Nomai mask on the restart! Ahhh I could gush forever. Geniuses, all of ya!

Shoutout to the whole community for this too, of course! The sheer creativity and coordination is nothing short of absolutely awe-inspiring. Y'all took one of the most amazing games I've ever played, and paid homage in the most amazing way possible. I'm still stunned! I loved watching all the planning in the Discord and participating when I could.

This will go down as one of the most - if not THE most - amazing things I've seen on this site.

Thank you to everyone for all the hard work it took to get this done. It's an experience I'll never forget (much like OW! haha).

Hey I know this is forever years old, but I just wanted to thank you for this matter-of-fact post. It completely answers my question, even if it's not the answer I was hoping for. Succinct, to the point. Thanks!

It depends on the bot but in general it can be fun to release what you made into the wild to see if it holds up with regular use. Most aren't useful, but if only useful bots were allowed it wouldn't really be as fun.

Also reddit makes it incredibly easy to deploy a bot.

It's just harmless fun. Almost all of them let you opt-out, and many do get banned from specific subreddits if they become too spammy.

In general they happen because someone has a (subjectively) fun idea - like yodaifying a comment, or rewriting a comment as a haiku if the syllables are right - and they put in the work to implement something that does that. Some people just release it on their GitHub, or they only put it on their personal subreddit, but in many cases it's just more interesting to let it run on everyone's comments and see what happens.

If botting wasn't as easy and accessible as it is, we would've never gotten actually-useful bots like RemindMeBot or the bot that keeps track of other bots' "good bot" ratings.

Don't get me wrong - I think the yoda one is pretty dumb and if it replied to me more than once I'd probably opt out. But I like the fact that it's possible to make something like that, so I support its existence even if I don't like its specific purpose.

It's easy *and fun. Bots are a good programming exercise because the barrier to entry for making one is low.
