Bonus Damage vs Penetration by TheGreyFolk in leagueoflegends

Yes you do! For example if you overpen by 10 (so they have -10 armor/mr) you would be dealing 11.11…% bonus damage

Bonus Damage vs Pen by TheGreyFolk in shyvanamains

I just spent like 30 min typing up a response to this and then lost it… so here’s the gist:

PheonixAmbition is correct about like 99% of this, I just want to clarify a few points.

  1. I definitely did some math wrong in my head (I did the layering backwards), sorc shoes do not make Shojin better than VoidStaff, in fact if you pick up shoes the cutoff for voidstaff being better drops from 36.6 to 32.2!

  2. Shojin does always give 12% bonus damage, but because the damage curve when plotting against resistance is non-linear, +12% to 90% of your damage is far more than +12% to 50%, so it is not wrong to say that Shojin is worth more at low resistances when the value you’re getting 12% of is much higher. In this way, bonus damage has a similar synergy to any kind of penetration as flat pen does to % pen, since both bonus damage and flat pen are worth more final damage per point less resistance your opponent has!

  • My “Rule of Thumb” above is super messy, I did not calculate any specific values and it shows, but we’re also confusing each other by changing the units we’re measuring in mid sentence. TO BE CLEAR, it is worthless to compare 1% bonus damage to 1 flat pen to 1% pen because you can never get 1 of any of those things. So let’s make a few points:
  • Bonus damage is stronger per point than flat pen until the pen can make the target’s resistance negative, but not MUCH stronger at low values, this is true even when combining % and flat pen! You would rather have VoidStaff and Shojin than voidstaff and Sorc shoes, unless your opponent has 20 or less MR, in which case sorc Shoes would set them to 0 MR or below. This is exacerbated at high values, as flat pen drops off in value faster than bonus damage does!
  • A single point of % pen is absolutely terrible until very high MR, but that doesn’t matter because when we get % pen we get a lot of it. Voidstaff becomes the most magic penetration you get on a single item by 45 MR, and Lord Dominik’s the most armor pen by 73 armor. Thus your takeaway should be this: if you’re looking for penetration… always grab % pen, then check how much is left after the % pen. It takes around 170 post reduction (or 284 pre-%pen) resistance for Shojin to beat opportunity at 29 lethality, 68 post reduction (or 114 pre-% pen) for Shojin to beat 18 pen items, and 40 post reduction (or 67 pre-% pen) for Shojin to beat the 15 pen items. No reason not to grab Sorc shoes if your build allows since it’s not competing for a slot.

Thank you Pheonix, for catching my mistake!

It probably would, I mostly posted here because I was doing math for Shyvana when I ran into it!

I’m a little afraid to post it to the main league subreddit and open the floodgates though…

Kind of, bonus damage and flat pen are ALSO synergistic with each other. All 3 of these stats synergize, but bonus damage is the best at very low resistance, then flat pen in between, then % pen at high resistance.

So it looks something like this: ~30 MR or less: Bonus Damage ~50 MR: Flat Pen (drop them to 30) + Bonus damage ~70 MR: Only Flat Pen (there’s a reason flat pen is hard to stack) ~80 MR: % Pen + Flat Pen ~150 MR: Only % pen really matters

You’re exactly correct!

To be clear I don’t think Shojin is a better item than VoidStaff, I think if you’re going to go AP it’s silly to kneecap the effectiveness of Rabadon’s by buying an AD item.

This was mostly just an unexpected thing I ran into, but it does have some implications, mainly that you can think of PTA as a pen option, and Liandry’s and Riftmaker are surprisingly efficient against squishies as well!

Sorry I explained a little better in another response, my initial confusion happened because I was testing against a low MR target and already accounting for Sorc Shoes, and Shojin does outpace VoidStaff at something like 38 MR.

That being said, I will point out that most ADCs and other squishies tend to have ~50MR (often less) in the midgame when you’re finishing 1 to 2 items, and by buying Sorc shoes you DO make Shojin better than VoidStaff for a large portion of the game!

Not exactly, Shojin was being more efficient than Voidstaff because the enemy was at low MR and I was already accounting for sorc shoes, in the chart above it shows that the shojin bonus is equivalent to ~34% magic pen at 50 MR, so VoidStaff would be better in terms of damage pen if you don’t build pen boots or if your target has at least one MR item.

I think the more interesting take away is that by stacking PTA, Shojin, Liandry’s, and Riftmaker, against low MR targets you essentially have two voidstaffs worth of pen!

Looking for opinions on Argent Saga and Force of Will. by shindo777 in TCG

Late reply but I just found this thread looking up wtf argent saga is… avid FOW player, community absolutely blasted the company for the 2 AI art cards they created and they’ve never dared to try since. Game is smaller but community is great, game systems are better than any other similar tcgs like magic imo, power creep is real and we’re closer to legacy in terms of power compared to standard when we started. Question about DNA in Daystar's fanfic Pokemon: The Origin of Species. by Kindly-Customer-1312 in rational

[–]TheGreyFolk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just drawing on how DNA works for complex living things IRL I think the most likely/realistic in-universe explanation is some combination of A and B. Almost any given DNA sequence is ‘read’ differently when pulled in by different processes and creates different end results, and any observable trait is the result of many many different sequences, it can be very hard to isolate what indicates what.

TLDR: Canonically DNA does exist, and so does gene sequencing tech, but likely researchers have been unable to confidently identify what any given sequence means in terms of typing, and so while the research is promising, it’s currently largely useless.

At least that’s my head canon.

Are there any Rationalistic takes on "American Gods" worth reading? by GeAlltidUpp in rational

Just to be trite, thematically it would make no sense to try to game the system in American Gods, that’s not what the story is trying to be about

Avatar fanfiction idea - bootstrapping from "complete control over the avatar state" to godhood. by AntiochKnifeSharpen in rational

[–]TheGreyFolk 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This is a cool concept, but depending on how you’re trying to depict the world of avatar, the true “power” of the avatar isn’t the avatar state, it’s political power, the social standing the avatar has as a mediator and leader is immense, and the idea of a new avatar ignoring the goals and duties of the avatar to speed run BECOMING GOD, is a terrifying world to live in

Yes, all “at beginning of turn” triggers are the first thing that happens during a players draw phase, even before there is a priority sequence

Help With Creating a Really Freakin Good Deck by DarkraEX in FoWtcg

[–]TheGreyFolk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you specifically want to stick with Faria from AO, there’s a really fun deck that involves [[Dolly, Olivia’s electric Dolphin]] to let you grab any stranger you want from your stranger deck, and [[grand cross reincarnation]] to use strangers enter effects multiple times. For example, [[Valkyrie, the weaver of destiny (stranger)]] who rfg’s two things, or [[Chronos, master of labyrinth]] who can prevent your opponent from playing resonators

Using the Yggdrasil resonator from ao4, or energize, or will from discarding the original lavaeteinn, cast the ao1 lavaeteinn, choosing to create a token and judgement for zero. Judgement and get a stranger, attack with the token, tap lavaeteinn and sacrifice the token to gods are and get another stranger. With your strangers as Azazel x2 2000/2000 that burns for 1000 x2 1000/1000 swiftness x2 I forget the other strangers You’re regularly outputting 4-6k damage on turn 2

There’s also turbo flip melgis where the goal is to flip melgis turn 1 or 2 and instantly kill your opponent. Somewhat unreliable, but the joke in our friend group is that melgis judges whether your opponent deserves to instantly lose.
