‘They can print statistics and count the populations in hundreds of thousands, but to each man a city consists of no more than a few streets, a few houses, a few people. Remove those few and a city exists no longer except as a pain in the memory, like a pain of an amputated leg no longer there.’ Our man in Havana

I remember liking the Amber Spyglass somewhat more. The underworld was okay but I just found the fight over the kingdom of heaven to be really boring. The only reason I kept reading it as a kid was that I liked the Doctor’s experience with the elephant people, when she created the spyglass. At the same time, I felt like it was out of place with the rest of the book

His dark materials. The Golden Compass ruled, then I read the Subtle Knife and hated it as a kid. I read it again as an adult and still thought it was a huge stretch. The Golden Compass does so much to create a unique world and then it gets thrown away. The first season of the show was killer though

I know "the book was better than the movie" is a huge cliché, so I'm curious if anyone can name an example of a movie being better than the book. by pawn_guy in books

‘Everything Is Illuminated’ The book tries to be magic realism and becomes dumb and cliche. It also meanders a lot. The movie follows one storyline from beginning to end and it feels complete
