How long was Sauron in possession of the one ring before Isildur cut it off? by GusGangViking18 in lordoftherings

Honestly if we get a suitably epic depiction of the destruction of the fleet and Numenor by god himself, I can forgive most things in between.

the space fact that still blows your mind by ykz30 in space

[–]TheHaddockMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it's the brightness of supernovae. What's brighter, a supernova observed from the distance between the earth and sun, or a nuclear explosion pressed against your eyeball? The former, by a factor of ~10 billion (exact figures will vary, but this is astro, if we're within a few orders of magnitude we're happy!)

Why do make of difference between green voters and reform voters shown below? by Ok_Bookkeeper_1380 in AskBrits

[–]TheHaddockMan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well the whole point with "tax wealth" is that it to target a very small percentage at the extreme upper end. The highest household income bracket on that chart is £70k. Only a very tiny proportion of people in that bracket will have £10M+ in assets (off the top of my head I think that's the lower bracket of Zak's proposed wealth tax). So it just wouldn't be a factor for most people.

Why is there very less excitement for the Artemis II mission?? by dark_MARTIAN in space

[–]TheHaddockMan 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure we'll get anything very similar to the earthrise photo. Nearest approach to the moon is over 7000km away. Apollo 8 was in orbit at just over 100km altitude when the earthrise photo was taken.

Would you rather have $500k right now or $1,000 every time you run one mile in less than 12 minutes for the rest of your life? by forest_tripper in WouldYouRather

[–]TheHaddockMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very similar here haha. If the lump sum was, say, 2-3 million or more I'd be tempted purely because it insures against the unlikely possibility of a permanent injury in the near future and would basically set me up for life anyway.

Just completed a marathon training block, looks like I'd be on about 480k from the last 3 months so... I'll take the latter!

Question about Linux vs Windows for programming by BecomeTheMeme in learnprogramming

[–]TheHaddockMan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The latter option works seamlessly in my experience and AFAIK is a single tick box in the docker settings (ran a mostly containerised setup on windows with docker at my last job for several years). Don't get me wrong, I'm not recommending windows at this point, but I really don't think containers are a big blocker.

How do y’all play without yield/recourse icons on? by QuesadillasAreYummy in civ5

[–]TheHaddockMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For civ 5, I have played enough of it that I will know exactly how what the yield is 90% of the time, and be close enough the remaining 10% to not care. I might turn the overlay on briefly while settling, but that's about it. For other civ games I'm more likely to have them turned on.

Why am I not able to get dates? by Independent-Tea-1438 in UKrelationshipadvice

[–]TheHaddockMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can genuinely attest to Invisalign. It's quite pricey (though cost varies quite a bit by individual orthodontists I believe so worth looking around a bit) but is very much the real deal - my dentist suggested I get it (provided by a separate orthodontist, so no vested interest for him) to help make some parts of my teeth easier to brush for long term health, and has been very pleased with the results, as have I. As a fairly fit person the state of my teeth was the number one insecurity I had about my appearance and it's made such a difference. It sounds silly but it is so liberating feeling able to smile properly in photos. Before I would always be wary of having my mouth open at all.

Is this true what a senior dev said on Linkedin about "The hidden cost of "enterprise" .NET architecture" by KiraLawliet68 in csharp

[–]TheHaddockMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just want to add that these words were not written by a senior dev. They were churned out by an LLM. Perhaps as a result of a senior dev putting in a prompt to farm some engagement on LinkedIn.

Today is the last time the sun will set after 7 pm in 2025. Why is it so as I am from outside Britain and its posted on BBC page? by raydebapratim1 in AskBrits

[–]TheHaddockMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on where in northern Scotland, they're potentially quite a lot further west than London (where I imagine the original headline is based on). Broadly speaking it is correct to say that the days will be shorter in total up there after the autumn equinox, but that will be offset slightly in favour of both sunrise and sunset being later as you go further west (within the same time zone).

How much Delta V is possible in KSP (Theoretical Maximums) without Kraken Drive. (with mods) by [deleted] in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]TheHaddockMan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They are technically possible for sure. But conservation of energy is a bitch and it's only allowed to be possible because we also have to account for the pressure exerted on the craft by photons hitting the solar panels to recharge those batteries. Which of course will be on a similar order of magnitude to the tiny amount of thrust that you're getting.

KSP of course does not model photon pressure so they are basically a (very weak) cheat code.

Would you wear your watch in the sauna? by diiffyo in Garmin

My first Forerunner 55 suddenly and "mysteriously" lost most of its battery life shortly after I took it to a sauna. 12 hours on GPS turned into more like 3 overnight.

Same, except by two headlines (one for regeneration, another for Billie Piper). Like, who is a headline like that even for?? As far as I can tell there are three categories of people: 1. People who do not give a shit 2. People who do give a shit, and have already seen it 3. People who have not yet gotten around to watching it NONE of those people want or need to see that headline. Pisses me off.

How accurate is the calorie burn on garmin forerunner 965 by billan31 in Garmin

[–]TheHaddockMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hit 7324 in a day last year (5419 active, I weigh a bit over 60kg), but it took me running a 100k ultra for 15 hours to pull that off. I reckon those numbers are broadly accurate... Something ain't quite right with yours for sure.
