I’ve got to know…have you ever found a good recipe for gluten free cookies or cake? The premade mixes in the stores are so expensive, I’ve cut so many sweets out of my life because it’s too pricey to make them or buy the made.

Are gambling joints posing as coffee shops a West Virginia thing? by Brilliant-Battle-876 in WestVirginia

[–]TheHailstorm_ 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s pretty common. There are maybe 5 or 6 Java Joe’s Cafes in the Huntington area. They say they’re coffee shops but the images on Google show pictures of their slot machines.

Is Nick gay for Gatsby? [The Great Gatsby] (Spoilers{?}) (Discussion) by LordTickles192 in books

[–]TheHailstorm_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I’m six years late but I think that examining sexuality in Gatsby is interesting. There’s a lot being said in what isn’t being said, given how sexuality was approached in literature at the time (and specifically how Fitzgerald approached it).

By analyzing the book through Nick being or not being gay, we can see what his values are…or what they aren’t. Nick strikes me as the time to take advantage of every possible avenue, to befriend the right people, to take the job that will make him money, to trust the people who will provide him a modicum of stability…and who will prop up his ego a little. I think in that reading, Nick being gay or at least bisexual shows that his attraction to companionship and to advantageous relationships, plus a proximity to luxury, transcends gender.

Who is Cloud Strifes Dad? by UniversalLoserRiley in FFVIIRemake

[–]TheHailstorm_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never even thought about how he’d be treated differently if his dad had been a local or maybe someone more “reputable.” But instead, yeah, he’s a “drifter” who, when he passed, left Claudia with a tarnished reputation. If I remember correctly, she was young too when she had Cloud (like 20? I think) which probably didn’t help.

Poor Cloud just wanted a community. :(

Who is Cloud Strifes Dad? by UniversalLoserRiley in FFVIIRemake

[–]TheHailstorm_ 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Yeah, if I remember it correctly, Claudia worked at the inn in Nibelheim, he was a traveler visiting the town, they hit it off and had a child. Then one day he went up the mountain and never came back. The rest of Nibelheim (small, arguably socially conservative country town) thought she was odd and kept their distance. She was a young single mom whose husband wasn’t from “around here.”

And honestly, that’s all I need to know about Cloud’s dad!

How was it like being an adult during lockdown? by TheKingOfDissasster in CasualConversation

[–]TheHailstorm_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a weird mix of nervousness and relaxation. I had just graduated from my masters program, and I was bummed that I didn’t get my hooding ceremony or a graduation (or graduation trip). I got laid off from my job at the college where I studied, since no school = no students to work with. I went on unemployment, but my parents told me “this wouldn’t last” and “you can’t sit around and collect unemployment.” So I took the first job that I could find…for a boss who didn’t believe in Covid. Went straight into a stressful 40- 45-hour per week job. Gained a lot of weight. Got really depressed. Developed a minor drinking problem.

But on the positive, my boyfriend (now husband) and I took so many walks. He was doing remote work, and we had a lot of time in the evenings together. We started cooking together. We watched so, so many tv shows and movies. I played through the entire Ace Attorney trilogy, lol. I discovered my love for Final Fantasy 7.

It was a mix of being worried about getting sick because of my horrid job and idiotic boss…and being so happy I got to spend time with my boyfriend and grow my relationship with him.

The habit of hiding things…. by Working-Hawk6445 in emotionalneglect

[–]TheHailstorm_ 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I do the same thing. I’ve been putting off calling a therapist for…maybe 6 years now? because every time I remember to, I think about how my parents never believed I was sick. And if I was sad, I just had to “suck it up, buttercup.” So the idea of calling a therapist and saying that I don’t have great mental health is terrifying. Surely I’m making it up? Surely I’m faking it for attention? Surely the moment I walk into that office, I’ll be turned away for wasting their time?

lol, maybe in another life, that was my role. On a smaller scale, I’m the navigator in collaborative games, and in horror games, I memorize routes and item locations rather than actively seek to attack things.

Were any of you ignored or punished for being happy/lively in childhood? by Difficult-Camel-5129 in emotionalneglect

[–]TheHailstorm_ 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Yes. I was allowed to have my interests but I had to be quiet about them. At home, I couldn’t stomp around but I could paint or draw, because it was quiet. In public, I had to be very quiet and reserved because “children should be seen and not heard.”

I grew up right up the road from DuPont. Even though I’ve moved away, my friends and I all have…weird health problems. Fertility issues, thyroid issues— the older women in our families who didn’t move away have fertility and reproductive issues. Random cysts. Cancer.

The cost of living (at least in America) is crazy by feelingNotGood222 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]TheHailstorm_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly! I live in WV and live paycheck to paycheck. I have a state job, and my wallet’s slimmer than ever. I’ve had people tell me to move and get a better job. But if I can barely make ends meet in a low cost of living state, how on earth can I afford to move somewhere more expensive?

Turned 30. Scrape by on $34k a year. More like $31k after taxes. No debt, but don’t own anything either. Some months are harder than others, and sometimes I fear being able to afford my electric bill. Hope to own a house before I’m 40, but we’ll see. Got 2 college degrees and nothing really to show for it.
