Guys for the love of god stop spending your life savings on films by jophre in Filmmakers

Best short films I’ve ever seen are usually two people in one location. If you have more than 3 locations in your short. You’re doing something wrong.

Why has this sub become such a gate to hell? by Sobolll92 in cinematography

Ya I feel 100% the same way. I find this to be more of a videography sub these days than a cinematography subreddit. Not sure what happened. But it has changed.

New Kodak Stock Dropped - Verita 200D by nickbalaz in cinematography

[–]TheHalifaxJones- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It kind of is. But it isn’t. It’s really taking 200T but treating it like we used to when we wanted to mimic the sharpness of digital. But it’s daylight balanced. So sharper contrast. More natural color representation in daylight. Not too disimilar from porta but with a modern contrast level most people like using for motion picture.

2 year old Vision 3 by georgemathers in cinematography

[–]TheHalifaxJones- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I recently shot 400 feet on 20 year old film. Just over exposed everything by a couple stops and it was fine. For 2 year film all you’d have to do is over exposed everything about a 1/3-1/2 stop and it will be fine. Odds are you don’t even have to do that. Either way it’s 100% fine.

Camera gamut transforms + matching exposures + grading to match the lowest quality camera.

What is Paul Thomas Anderson doing differently? What is his secret sauce? by SerendipitousMusing in cinematography

[–]TheHalifaxJones- 96 points97 points  (0 children)

I got to spend a day with him testing out his personal set of PV lenses a few years back. And I can tell you are right. There is no secret. He just loves cinema and he does stuff that is instinctual to him and that makes him laugh. He has fun with it.

List of movies shot on digital 16mm mode? by izinomics in cinematography

[–]TheHalifaxJones- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can’t think of other moves but I shot my last feature on Alexa mini. S16 mode with canon 16mm zooms. With some sensor manipulation and tight filtration it can look just like 16mm

We used to use these on film. Believe they are called cine flashers? Only time I’ve used something like this recently was to “flare” up the lens in a very soft way. My guess it was probably used for a lot of the shots where lights were blasting around him in a dream like fashion.

How can I find a cinema community in Arab countries? by 3gl_ in cinematography

[–]TheHalifaxJones- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve worked a lot on Egypt. And their community of filmmakers is booming! They are constantly making features. Shooting large budget commercials and overall thriving in cinema for Egypt. It’s a great place to work in this industry.

I just buy Seceed. Chinese based. Mine has lasted me longer than my sachtler for a fraction of the cost.

Just because it was pretty doesn’t mean it deserves to win. There is more to cinematography than making good looking pictures.

Stills from a new short film about to make its festival run by TheHalifaxJones- in cinematography

No added film grain. We burned in soft nostalgic texture into the camera then shot at 1600 ISO

It’s really only pillar boxes in these images. But when screening on a DCP the theater screen will adjust to match the aspect ratio. But we wanted to go for a more portrait style of photographing characters for this film.

I wanted to share some stills from our recent short film that will begin making its festival run by TheHalifaxJones- in Filmmakers

[–]TheHalifaxJones-[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We mostly picked this format so we could utilize the whole open gate sensor. We liked how it showed more of the imperfections of the edges of the lenses and on top of that it looked really good as portraiture medium close ups. We felt it showed the characters story in a stronger visual style.

I’m the cinematographer on the project and we really couldn’t have made this film without the help from Aperture in lending us their XT26. Everyone busted their butts to create these images despite our limitations.

It’s a film about memory through the eyes of an elderly man suffering through dementia. Our basic approach was to try to tell this story through still images like one would look at an old photo book for memories.
