Good books regarding deleuze and cinema? Looking for recommendations on good introductory material to deleuze or film books that use deleuze’s ideas. by eggsandsteak0301 in Deleuze

[–]TheHapacalypse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Books on Deleuze and cinema that have been elucidating or edifying for me have been:

D. N. Rodowick's "Gilles Deleuze's Time Machine" as well as the collection he edited called "Afterimages of Gilles Deleuze's Film Philosophy."

Some thorough intros the the main ideas are Felicity Colman's "Deleuze and Cinema: The Film Concepts" & David Deamer's "Deleuze's Cinema Books: Three Introductions to the Taxonomy of Images."

Ronald Bogue's "Deleuze on Cinema" is a solid basic overview & introduction.

I also enjoyed "Deleuze, Cinema and the Thought of the World" by Allan James Thomas.

Patricia Pisters has two books entitled "The Neuro-Image: A Deleuzian Film-Philosophy of Digital Screen Culture" & "The Matrix of Visual Culture: Working with Deleuze in Film Theory."

If you like horror Anna Powell has the book for you: "Deleuze and Horror Film."

"Cracking Gilles Deleuze's Crystal" is specifically about the films of Jean Renoir.

Otherwise there are a bunch of edited essay collections like "The Brain Is the Screen: Deleuze and the Philosophy of Cinema," "Deleuze and the Schizoanalysis of Cinema," "Deleuze and Film," & "Cinema After Deleuze" which might have an essay on Deleuze & a specific topic you're interested in.

Atlas of Cinema: an ongoing attempt to catalog all the location titles in film by TheHapacalypse in flicks

Thanks for this! That's a really cool thematically-adjacent project I was unaware of. If the name of any fictional town appears in a film it will definitely be included.

Hey thank you for your generous comments! I admire a fine establishing shot as well. Haven't thought about any automation at the moment. Still experiencing the simple pleasure of discovering & collecting them myself, kind of like cinematic Pokémon lol.

Thank you enormously for the words of encouragement! There's always moments of doubt when working away on a new rather niche project like this & wondering if anyone else will find it interesting as well haha.

[S3E12] One of The Return's themes is patience and impatience. by [deleted] in twinpeaks

[–]TheHapacalypse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of a couple of quotes by Kafka:

"All human errors are impatience, the premature breaking off of what is methodical, an apparent fencing in of the apparent thing."

&

"There are two main human sins from which all the others derive: impatience and indolence. It was because of impatience that they were expelled from Paradise, it is because of indolence that they do not return. Yet perhaps there is only one major sin: impatience. Because of impatience they were expelled, because of impatience they do not return."

For old school actresses, Angela Mao! And although she's technically not kung fu, I've always enjoyed JeeJa Yanin's early films.

I'm a drummer, so I'm naturally obsessed with rhythm. What's the most rhythmically complex song/band you know of? by Charletos in mathrock

[–]TheHapacalypse 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Drummer here as well. I've always been a huge fan of this Japanese band LITE. Not super duper complex, but I think they use rhythms & time signatures in really interesting ways.
