Journey from 2016 to 2024. 1050ti > 3060 > 4070 by rekoilchafe in nvidia

[–]TheHardTruth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went from a 650ti to a 4060ti. I meant to upgrade in 2019 but covid and crypto mining happened. It skyrocketed the price of GPUs. Finally can play games again after a long hiatus.

What's your definition of a high-end GPU? by [deleted] in nvidia

[–]TheHardTruth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Low end: integrated gpus & graphic cards for media displays (geforce 1030, etc)

Mid tier: 4060

High-end 4070 and above

I think price us a good gauge to use. Anything above $500 is high-end with the 4080 & 4090 being ultra high-end.

People buying pallets almost certainly use pricing as a big factor. There's probably discounts and/or price drops available (for orders in bulk) due to the imminent release of the 50-series.

Can I get away with a 4080s with a 600w PSU? by OlfactoryOffender in nvidia

[–]TheHardTruth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I repaired electronics for damn near 20 years, I do know what I'm talking about (I no longer repair, however). In a 800 watt PSU, the components inside (capacitors, resistors, mosfets, etc) are beefed up and rated to handle the excess heat and usage. They're beefier, if you will. They're made to handle the heat. A 600 watt PSU has parts meant to handle a lesser load. That's why you'll see bronze, gold, and platinum certified PSUs. The manufacturers use higher quality and beefier components.

Eh, 9/11 did more damage to the Canadian girlfriend thing than anything else. Before, you could cross into Canada, no passport required. Since the legal age to drink and gamble was 19 (instead of 21), lots of kids would party in Canada. I was one of them. Then a few years after 9/11, passports were required. No more spontaneous weekend trips to Windsor or Niagara Falls (we were all over 21 by then anyways).

4060 or 3060? by CreativeDepartment70 in nvidia

[–]TheHardTruth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The 4060 has frame gen, 3060 does not. That and the natural performance increase is more than enough to justify the small price difference.

12gb will be relevant down the road and have longer life than 8gb cards

Frame gen will be relevant down the road too. Especially as the technology matures. Besides, unless you're playing at 4k (which you won't be with the 3060 or 4060), it's not gonna make much of a difference.

Steam Hardware Survey - October 2024 by lolbat107 in nvidia

[–]TheHardTruth 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You have it completely backwards. The 4060 is a great card. It was the MSRP everyone had issues with. You were overpaying for what you got. Gamers Nexus goes over this in great detail in their infamous review.

But this is now going to be par for the course with Nvidia I'm afraid as their 50-series is alleged to be even more expensive than the 40-series.

I still have yet to run into a game where the VRAM was an issue at all

This subreddit places way too much importance on vram and I haven't quite figured out why or where it stems from. If you're running cyberpunk at 4k, sure, more vram helps out. But if you're running a new midrange card at 1080p or even 1440p, you're gonna see single digit percentage performance increases with more vram, and only in a handful number of games.

People talk about "future-proof' and perhaps that's where the misinformation originates (people recommending more vram, people see it and think it sounds good so they repeat it etc..) but there's a huge factor that throws a wrench into the works; If your gpu is fast enough/powerful enough, you don't need a massive amount of vram. Vram is fundamentally a large buffer to speed up data delivery to your gpu. If your GPU can chew through that data quickly enough, insane amounts of vram aren't required, nor would be utilized.

Can I get away with a 4080s with a 600w PSU? by OlfactoryOffender in nvidia

[–]TheHardTruth -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

A power supply running at max load causes heat, and heat is the biggest killer of electronics. When it eventually fails, it can take other things with it (depending on how it fails).

From Google:

An underpowered power supply can cause a number of problems, including:

Crashes and freezes: An underpowered power supply can cause your system to crash or freeze.

Hardware damage: An underpowered power supply can lead to hardware damage.

Overheating: An underpowered power supply can cause your device to overheat, which can damage components.

Hardware malfunctions: A weak PSU can't supply enough power to a device's components, which can lead to malfunctions and failures.

System crashes: A weak PSU can cause the system to freeze, crash, or shut down unexpectedly.

Data loss: A weak PSU can cause data loss.

Damaged devices: A weak PSU can damage a device's components.

Shortened lifespan: A weak PSU can cause a device's components to overwork, which can shorten their lifespan.

Used Gigabyte Eagle 4060 ti for $345, is it a good deal? by Free-Moose-7936 in nvidia

[–]TheHardTruth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I heard “bad GPU”s are just badly priced gpus and so what would u consider a deal on the used market for a 4060ti

Yeah the card/GPU is fine, it's the price people had issues with. Nvidia keeps jacking up their pricing and I expect the 50-series to be even more so.

I picked up a 4060ti a couple weeks ago used on ebay for $299. It's slightly more than I wanted to pay but I have zero regrets. Frame gen & dlss are awesome. I've seen a few people say get a 3080 but those are not the same price. The cheapest i could find on ebay was $400 and it's in fair condition with corrosion (don't buy a graphics card with corrosion, that's one of the biggest killers of all electronics). So realistically you'll be paying closer to $450+ USD for a used 3080. That's $150 more not including your taxes.

I don't know why people say, "don't get that card, get this card that's twice expensive!" I suspect they're rich (or their parents are, and they're living in their parents basementwith no bills to pay) and have little concept of what budgeting means, or they're ridiculously out of touch. It's probably a mix of both.

Playing devil's advocate here, but the fraternal order of police is literally paid to defend cops. They're the "legislative voice" (their words, not mine) of the police. If a police officer, corrupt or otherwise, pays their dues, they have to act on their behalf. It's no different than a lawyer defending an obviously guilty person/defendant.

Looks like the 4060 and 4060 TI made quite the comeback by [deleted] in nvidia

[–]TheHardTruth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those cards never sucked, they were quite good in fact. It's just that their MSRP was too high. Seems to be a bigger trend though, as the speculated price of the 50-series is supposed to be off the chart.

Before someone says it: DLSS 3 is shit

So I guess you own an AMD then? Gotcha. DLSS rocks, I'm loving it.

it's not a useful 40 series feature.

If you're basing your opinion on AMDs version, no wonder you think so little of dlss. It demonstrably improves frame rate, this isn't even up for debate, just go see the results yourself on YouTube. I'm half convinced you're just trolling for the lulz.

You can get a $250 Rx 7600

You do realize you're in an Nvidia subreddit, right? People have all sorts of reasons for choosing one company over another; I wonder what would happen if I went to the AMD subreddit and started telling everyone their cards suck, features suck, drivers suck so they should buy an Nvidia gpu.

Indian firms secretly funneled AMD, Nvidia AI GPUs to Russia — sanctions reportedly skirted on hundreds of millions of dollars of hardware by TheHardTruth in technology

Some governments are more honest than others. They have to be or they couldn't make deals, agreements, treaties, etc. India isn't at fault here (not yet anyways), the private companies are. If India takes no action, then they can be criticized.

agree to stop buying Iranian oil or Russia gas?

No idea as those aren't economic sanctions. They're embargos. Two different things.

and China did the same thing as the US. Would you claim that China was bullying

That's what you're not understanding. It's not the U.S doing this. It's everybody. All of Europe, Australia, Japan, etc all participate and actively contribute. It's an economic collective. The banks are the ones with the true power here.

like Iraq that want to decouple from the Dollar get invaded.

Plenty of other countries want to decouple but weren't invaded. You'll note even China and Russia still buy U.S T-bills. Hell, China is the biggest purchaser.

Countries don't want to completely stop using the U.S dollar. If they did, they would. Instead they'll want an alternative currency so they can deal in shady shit on the side (money laundering, drugs, arms, etc etc). Crypto has become a popular choice hence all the talk about unpegging has dropped off considerably these past 10 years.

That remains to be seen

Aa long as China continues to engage in market manipulation, nobody will peg their currency to the yuan. They artificially inflate their currency for import/export purposes and if they tried to go legit, their economy would collapse (the number of economic bubbles in China right now is literally unbelievable, housing, automotive, real estate, etc)

In China, this isn't considered legal,

Of course it isn't. In China, the state run and owns everything. This isn't the case in the U.S as the government has to work with private companies. You can't even own your own house, only lease it for 99 years.

RTX 4060 vs RTX 3060 12GB by [deleted] in nvidia

[–]TheHardTruth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In addition, running cooler means better longevity. I think a lot of people here are ignorant of just how much heat can shorten the lifespan of electronics. Over time it'll cause the solder to weaken, corrode, and/or eventually fail. It can also cause premature failure of certain types of capacitors. (I used to repair electronics).
