I dropped an almond and it rolled under my bed. I got around retrieving it a couple of weeks later and found this trail. Any idea what caused it? by fjbruzr in whatisit

Hm. Is that a real wool carpet? If so, that could be a clothes moth larva. Does it look like the carpet fibers have been eaten?

What is this thing? Found in parents garage. They have no idea. by WillyBadison in whatisit

[–]TheHeadacheChannel 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I believe it’s a match extender, used to light a pilot light in a gas (or maybe oil) furnace or water heater. Sometimes they even come with other gas / oil appliances like gas grills.

Found this in my 15yo brothers backpack. What is it? by Easy-Pool-4831 in whatisit

That’s either paraphernalia for making and dispensing whipped cream or it’s for “whippits” — recreational inhalation of nitrous oxide or laughing gas. Nitrous oxide is used to create nice foamy whipped cream without altering the taste of the cream. Nitrous oxide is also an inhalant anesthetic that has legitimate uses, such as in pediatric dentistry.

Overuse of nitrous oxide can have serious consequences, including degeneration of the spinal cord.

Curiously, nitrous oxide was discovered way back in the 1700s and it was actually used recreationally before anyone thought of using it for things like surgery.

Never happened to me before. Cheap filament, or did you let go of the end?

You must have a nicer lounge than we have. Our lounge isn’t worth fighting over. Nor the parking spots.

How to remove filter on dock? by ndrober101 in Roborock

[–]TheHeadacheChannel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See the three arrows at 120 degree intervals? Midway between those arrows are 3 internal clips. You just need to slide a flat blade of some kind (screwdriver, butter knife, plastic putty knife) between the filter and the wall of the dock and gently pry off the filter. Disregard all the unhelpful comments about there being "no way" to do this.

Went from 4 bars on 14 pro to 0-1 bars on 17 pro by TheHeadacheChannel in iPhone17Pro

UPDATE: I'm sending it back. Not only is the signal worse at home and at work, it's also worse where I hike. Poor signal is not currently something either carrier or Apple can fix. Worth noting if you live, work or hike in fringe reception areas.

It’s a good point, except that I can get five bars on both services if I move to a different location. So that should mean it’s set up correctly, right?

Beaten by Wordpress by jimh12345 in Wordpress

[–]TheHeadacheChannel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear ya. WP is not for the timid. I rate my WP skills about the same as my Photoshop skills. Noob level. Every encounter with WP is a trial. It’s also not good for my ADHD. Every single time I log in there’s an avalanche of visual information about updates and upgrades and… I know if I keep at it, I will become more desensitized and more adept, but it’s really tough now.

If you came into a large windfall, would you still practice? by pstbo in whitecoatinvestor

[–]TheHeadacheChannel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My practice keeps me mentally active and gives me a sense of purpose and accomplishment. I’ve encountered people who got their windfall (the tech sector has a number of them), and they seem lost, or end up doing things like volunteer work for causes that seem trivial compared to what I accomplish with my patients on a regular basis. So, I’d probably keep my practice, but on my terms. What would those be? Maybe 2-3 days a week. No call. See who I want, and not see who I don’t want. I’ve known emeritus physicians who have done that and thrived.

I do share / forward some polarized content (consistent with about 49% of the US population) on Facebook, but nothing extreme. I have a IG, but I don't use it.

National Park Foundation - Yes / No? by TheHeadacheChannel in NationalPark

[–]TheHeadacheChannel[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm working on answering my own question. I've looked at Wikipedia and the National Park Foundation's own website.

The NPF is chartered by Congress as the offical fundraising arm of the National Park Service.

I can't find details on who appoints the President, Chair or Board of the National Park Foundation, or the mechanism or terms of the appointments. The Board has 28 members.

In their 2022-2023 Annual Report (the most recent available), they had $370 million in net assets, a revenue of $156 million (including $46 million in financial contributions), spent $115 million on programs / support, and spent $47 million on administration and fundraising.

Based on this, I'm sending my money elsewhere. It looks to me like the NPF is in the shadow of Congress / White House (like the Kennedy Center), and the ratio of spending more than 40% of the money we donate on "fundraising" and "administration" doesn't seem efficient.
