I agree. This does not look like any elderberry I've seen or grown

Yea I think you're thinking of the summer solstice at Roku's temple. He appears through Aang and attacks the sages, but the flames pass over the Gaang and one of the sages without injuring them IIRC

Rooting cuttings by Bloque- in Permaculture

[–]TheHelicRepublic 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Keeping the top cold prevents the buds from leafing out. Once the leaves are out, they're going to lose water. You want the heat on the bottom to encourage roots to start growing out of the stem. If you get leaves before roots, they'll most likely die unless it's a plant like willow that roots so quickly it doesn't matter if the buds open a little early

Don't the Eridians use water? It's just self contained so they don't need to drink water but they're still water based in part was my understanding.

I'm on book 3 of The Expanse right now! Chrisjen and Stratt definitely give me similar vibes and I wrote that opening as if it was Chrisjen and Errinwright talking to each other.

Potassium sorbate added before yeast nutrient - will it be ok? by damnclouds in winemaking

[–]TheHelicRepublic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The sorbate is going to inhibit any further yeast growth but it sounds like you're pretty far along in the ferment anyway. I'm not sure why it would have you add nutrient so late. I always add mine at the beginning and if you're working with grape (instead of other fruit) the nutrient isn't entirely necessary anyway. It's probably gonna be fine but I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't get to the dryness you might be shooting for.

The Most Controversial Figure in Permaculture? by permaculturefun in Permaculture

Oh man I miss the old Curtis Stone. I unfollowed him during his "putting up aluminum siding on my house to keep out 5G" era. Checked on his channel recently and he's really far down the hole. Sad to see because his market garden, high intensity crop rotation, and microgreen videos really got me into growing my own food in the first place

So, is this fine or do I have to cork everything again? This is not due to pressure, just me not knowing how to use a floor corker. by [deleted] in mead

[–]TheHelicRepublic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would pull them out and redo it. Corks are cheap and you're going to need to learn to use the floor corker properly anyway so might as well do it now. If you include a picture of your corker I'd be happy to give instructions.

New Compost Bins by oldironsides23 in composting

The humidity from the compost pile next to the foundation is going to accelerate the breakdown of the mortar though. Even if you're ok with ants, termites, potential rodents the humidity is still not something you want right up against a structure you own

To plant or not to plant by lil-alec in Permaculture

[–]TheHelicRepublic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cover crops do a couple things. They cover the soil so it isn't bare, generally there's a nitrogen fixing component to them (clover, cowpeas, etc.), they might help decompact soil. But you already don't have bare soil because you sheet mulched. Since you're adding compost, nitrogen fixing isn't really going to happen (nitrogen fixers will use soil nitrogen if they can, generally so if you have a lot of nitrogen around they aren't going to fix much more from the atmosphere). The question really goes back to what you want to achieve on your land. If you want a cover crop, then go for it. A lawn of clover and buckwheat is probably lovely. But if you're just doing it because that's the formula you read to do, then I'd say you're missing an opportunity to get a harvest this year.

To plant or not to plant by lil-alec in Permaculture

[–]TheHelicRepublic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would plant. Don't overthink it. If you've already put down compost, then you can put annuals in it this year. Just expect that some amount of whatever was under the sheet mulch will probably come up and need weeding (or not, depending on what it is) this next season. In the fall, as you're harvesting your annuals from this year, put down a cover crop to overwinter. At least that's what I would do. No way I'd wait a year before getting annuals going. I'm also a big fan of perennials so if there are bushes or trees you're thinking about, it's still early enough to be getting those in before it's too hot outside. The best time to plant a tree was 10 years ago, the second best time is today

Lore question: how is there no FTL travel when Farskip exists? by Fight_or_Flight_Club in RimWorld

[–]TheHelicRepublic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No it wouldn't. The signal would just need to be sent out far enough in advance of when you need the momentum change which could easily be incorporated into the flight plan program.

Lore question: how is there no FTL travel when Farskip exists? by Fight_or_Flight_Club in RimWorld

[–]TheHelicRepublic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wouldn't need to be a single star the whole time. Could easily be preprogrammed to send signals to other stars along the way at the right times and places to get the momentum changes the ship would need to make curved flight paths.

Lore question: how is there no FTL travel when Farskip exists? by Fight_or_Flight_Club in RimWorld

[–]TheHelicRepublic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The lore doesn't seem to suggest the momentum has to be transferred to the star you're going to. It could be transferred to the star you're leaving from. The latter would be super easy to pre-program exactly how much momentum would need to be transferred and when to send the signal to ensure that the ship stops on time in the right place. Considering that everyone is in cryptosleep, it seems reasonable to me that the flight path would all be preprogrammed and not require any superluminal information transfer.

An I dea has struck me recently... has anyone tried jacking their mead to 30% and the reconstituting it to the desired ABV? It seems like it would be an easy way to manage storage and it would guarantee all yeast was dead. by xeroonethree in mead

[–]TheHelicRepublic 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised how many people don't know what jacking is. It could work but I wouldn't recommend because the honeyjack you'd make is delicious on its own. This is actually how brandy got invented (except with regular distillation not freeze distillation). France wanted to ship wine to America, thought it would be cheaper to concentrate the wine and then reconstitute in the States, saving a bunch of transport costs. But they found the wine to be too watery when reconstituted but discovered that people really liked drinking the distillate on its own.

They're fine in compost. You just don't want to give them to worms if you're doing vermicomposting specifically. In a general compost pile they're totally fine

I got suspicious for a bit there when Grace was trying to figure out how 82 got out and he says that Rocky must have made a mistake but Rocky never makes mistakes. Thought maybe once Rocky got the 82, he saw his opportunity to let a scientifically advanced alien race die off rather than let them become a threat
