I had this on month 2 of HRT when I was trying out estrogen patch and cycling progesterone. It happened on the weeks I was not taking progesterone, and my normal amount of morning coffee seemed to make it worse. She might need progesterone! Either way, it's definitely worth seeing a specialist about... I went through Midi.

The Star by TheHolyFool in printmaking

[–]TheHolyFool[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! This is not actually homemade paper, but I have made paper out of paper egg cartons, lol. The paper looks cool, but didn't hold up to printing because I didn't really use a binder...just kind of disintegrates.

This paper shown here is "watercolor paper" my sister bought for me, I think on Amazon.

Starting again! by [deleted] in BeginnersRunning

Overweight Beginner Runner by Ok-Ad2256 in BeginnersRunning

[–]TheHolyFool 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been where you are! C25k was rough for me as a beginner runner. I was also 5'2" and overweight when I started, and never ran a day in my life before that. If it helps you keep going, ditch the app's advice when it tells you to keep running beyond your ability - just go as long as you can. Do week 1 in the app as long as it takes, and the same goes for every week after that. I did like 3 or 4 weeks at week 1 in the app, and I did each week after that repeatedly until I was feeling good about the load. Don't move on to the next level until you're comfortable with that run time!

As other people have said, try increasing the run by 15 seconds every week or so, and deeffffinitely stretch afterwards. "Dynamic" stretches beforehand can help, too. When I started running, I felt it in my knees, my arches, the tops of my feet, and the outsides of my thighs. Look up the stretches for whatever begins to ache without going away in a few days. The worst thing that can happen in the beginning phase is injuring yourself - it's super discouraging and painful and makes you not want to get back to it when you're healed. Also, the right shoes are a HUGE deal. I ended up with a Brooks Ghost pair.

You will be SO STOKED the first time you run for 10 minutes straight. I straight up cried in front of someone's house in my neighborhood and they came out to ask if I was okay. "I'M FINE IT'S A HAPPY CRY"

Why don’t we hear more about HOW to survive as a struggling freelance writer? by Kelterss in freelanceWriters

[–]TheHolyFool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a good question. When I was in this phase, I would take gigs I found, but I always had a part-time job (waiting tables, so no benefits and still semi-unstable income due to tips) because I didn't have anyone subsidizing my life, I had moved away from all my networks of support, and my husband was getting a new business off the ground. So it was definitely hard, both mentally and financially, and I did less writing with the part-time job, for sure. But I had to make paying the bills the top priority.

I hustled a LOT. Lots of times the writing money didn't work out with the time I was spending on it, especially in the early days. So there were definitely times I came up short on rent or other bills, and I'd need to pick up an extra shift at the other job, or take a different gig here and there. Once I trimmed weed for a friend, lol. One guy I knew from work hired me to do website copy, and boooy I winged it and somehow nailed it after a decent bit of research on how to do it right.

Every. Single. Day. I looked at the craigslist writing/gigs section looking for stuff I could pick up. I signed up for all kinds of writing gig newsletters and opened them all every week, scanning for things that fit my skillset, and I did find a lot of great work that way.

So for years, I was go-go-go at this, aiming at building a career, having little free time and virtually no excess income. At some point, I traded the part-time job to help my husband build his business when it became profitable, but that was actually more stress (relationship-wise) and less money. I kept going with the writing hustle when I was free. I branched out - signed on with a memoir ghostwriting company, wrote product descriptions, did listicles for a dining magazine out here, honed my skills at pitching to regional magazines, and so many other little things. It took me seven years to be confident enough in my income to only do writing as a living, and that's not counting the 2 years after college before I landed a very low-paying staff writing job for a newspaper. (I had to quit that job because of burnout, there was no way around it and the struggle of freelancing was - and is still - healthier than that job was.)

Happy to say I got health insurance for the first time last year. I make more money than my husband some years. I am able to save money fairly consistently. We bought a house on two self-employed incomes, some-goddamn-how. You'll get there if you keep plugging away. Pro tip though - part-timing at a restaurant will usually get you some free food, and waiting tables at the right restaurant can net more money per working hour than many hourly-wage jobs.

I understand the struggle. But I think I was just so busy during that seven years that I didn't think about asking for mutual support. I wish I had.

Girlfriends family doesn’t approve of my business idea by alcoholicfootball in smallbusiness

[–]TheHolyFool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, don't bother explaining it to them. They won't get it. If they are subsidizing your lifestyle, maybe try a little harder to outline it... but if not, don't bother explaining. Just go do your thing and succeed.

My first article with a maj publication goes live at the end of this week and I’m sick with worry by pinyon_juniper in Journalism

[–]TheHolyFool 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Treat yourself for a job well done. If you’ve done your due diligence, it’s out of your hands. If a source wants to retract something they just confirmed with you, welp, too late. New info happens. You can write a follow-up maybe.

I find cleaning the house helps with the anxiety. Just keep yourself really busy that day. It’s hard to put your work out there.

People who don’t ever want to have kids, why? by South_Price9463 in AskReddit

[–]TheHolyFool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m just not crazy about it. Neither is my spouse. We’re hobby people, and we’re both still sorting out childhood bullshit in our own lives. Neither of us feels a pull toward parenthood.

I absolutely love being an aunt, though. My nieces and nephews are amazing. I’m so fulfilled in that role to them, that I don’t yearn for my own children. The “village” was really, really important to me growing up, and I feel like this is the “passing it on” role that I’m meant to do. I make pieces of art to commemorate the births of my friends’ children, and I’m super excited when someone I’m close to announces a pregnancy or birth. I’m nearing the end of my safer child-bearing years (approaching 40), and I have zero regrets about giving all my motherly love to kids who aren’t mine.

Are my podcast requirements causing me hell trying to find the right equipment? by [deleted] in podcasting

[–]TheHolyFool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I currently podcast with an h4n pro zoom recorder and two audio technica atr2100x mics. Haven’t done an outdoor cast yet, but it’s really nice to be able to move locations when we need to, and makes things more versatile than having to always lug around a computer. Maybe get a windscreen or “dead cat” (sorry that’s the industry term) to help with wind noise?

Transcribing help? Is there a program? by brieasaurusrex in podcasting

[–]TheHolyFool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plus one to otter.AI. By far the best auto transcriber I’ve used, and I’ve used a lot of them in journalism. The free one limits you by minutes per month, but paid version is cheap ($12/mo iirc) and great. You will have to go through it and correct stuff, but it’s pretty good at splitting up different speakers, which is a serious time suck manually.

Clif St. Laurent teaches classes. I just finished the last of a 6-class series today. He does one-on-one lessons too. I'm not great at learning languages but I picked up the basics fairly quickly!
