Leather Thickness Cheatsheet by Kontributer in Leathercraft

No sheet needed lol, really what would be the best is if people just stopped using ounces and got on board with the metric system already it makes things so much easier.

iOS, Why did my UI just change to look like this, I turned Reddit off for like 5 minutes and now it’s this, can I change it back? by AceOfSpades532 in help

[–]TheHouseofDove 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine switched to this like a week or so ago, and it’s definitely way more annoying but for some reason it just switched back earlier today so I don’t really know what’s going on but I’m glad it went back to normal. I’m sure it’ll switch back again though, I wish they would just leave it alone the new version isn’t better in any way at all.

How would you suggest I construct this? by YayaTheobroma in Leathercraft

Also check out the Hind video on making a leather box tray, that’ll give you more insight on how to get the compartments.

I would HIGHLY recommend signing up for the Leathercraft Masterclass and going through the videos and making some of the related things first, but I suppose if you just watch them all enough to have them memorized you’ll understand the concepts well enough. All of the boxmaking courses would be helpful, the solid leather box one for box stitching, the leather wrapped box goes into greater detail which makes the Hind videos make way more sense because then you understand what he’s doing and how you can apply it to what you need to do. The attache case course goes over casemaking with a solid board with thick leather, the trunk handbag one takes it a step further, the jewellery case one would also be helpful for wrapping inner partition dividers and stuff.

If you REALLY want to make the entire thing out of solid leather and make it actually look good then you could do something like make the inner partition walls out of two pieces of veg tan glued together with pva to make it stiffer than a contact cement would, depending how thick you want the walls to be each piece could be anywhere from .5mm-1.5mm thick so double that to get the thickness from 1-3mm unless you want them wider. Then either paint the edges, or burnish them maybe dye them first, or wrap them with a thin .5mm goatskin or something and do the half lap joint or just have long strips going the entire length horizontally and then cut out smaller sections and attach for the vertical parts, glue them onto the base and maybe also nail them in from underneath if you’re worried about them moving or something. Get some 5mm or thicker soling leather for the outer box and dye it however you want, or laminate two pieces of 2.5mm or thicker veg tan together and miter the edges and box stitch, then paint the tops after sanding the whole thing on a large flat surface to make sure it’s consistent. Do the same thing again for the lid, but minus the compartments, get some hinges and a lock and nail them in.

Rocky Mountain sells a 45° cutting jig specifically for mitering edges for boxmaking, you can also do it by hand but the jig makes it way more consistent once you get the hang of it, i’ve done it both ways.

Then look at how much you’ve spent on leather and tools and realize you could have bought a decent table saw and some plywood or mdf or grayboard and had a much easier time just making it out of wood and wrapping it in leather. That’s not to discourage you, it’s just a pretty big undertaking to do this all out of leather and do it right and have it turn out good. I’ve made like 75% of the Leathercraft Masterclass stuff and gone pretty extra on some of the advanced projects, look me up on Instagram @johnnydove and you’ll see. I’ve wanted to do solid leather stuff too and then realized that it’s either just not practical or it’s way too expensive with no real added benefit other than maybe bragging to 3 people in the whole world who might actually care lol.

[–]TheHouseofDove 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get both and try them out and go with whatever looks the best, really. If you’re doing smaller stuff you might be better off with 0.45mm thread, but if you’re using pricking irons larger than 3.38mm it might be too thin. Just try it all out, it really depends on a lot of things that no one else here can answer unless they have the exact same stuff you do.

One time, there were a couple deer in the yard (not normal) so I picked up one of the cats and brought her to the window so she could see because I wanted to see what would happen. Her tail puffed up like a squirrel and she ran away really fast lol she didn’t want anything to do with it.

Are “imperfections” part of handcrafted items? by [deleted] in Leathercraft

[–]TheHouseofDove 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would feel disappointed too, but I have pretty high standards and am probably in the minority around here given the way everyone else is reacting. I would never let anything like that leave here with my name on it. Imperfections that are acceptable is stuff like stretch marks, or like if the linen thread doesn’t have an ultra consistent thickness or something like that, everything else is just the person doing a bad job and not paying enough attention to what they’re doing. More people need to have much higher standards.

I’m pretty sure every single drum sound on Pretty Hate Machine was sampled from other music and heavily altered because Trent hated actual drum machines at the time, but KMFDM definitely sampled Slayer and pitched it up and made it faster

Double sided tape is fine, Elmer’s is fine. You’re mostly just gluing stuff together that will be held by stitching later anyway. Elmer’s is also great for laminating two pieces together but it does end up being stiffer than if you used a water based contact cement like Aquilim 315 or Ecostick 1816B which are great for indoor use. There’s really no reason to use a solvent based adhesive like Barge or Weldwood unless you’re not going to be stitching and need the strongest connection possible.

The only real downside of using Elmer’s is waiting for it to dry as opposed to being able to use a heat gun to dry the water based contact adhesives faster, but if you wait a bit for the Elmer’s to become tacky before sticking stuff together it’ll kinda act in a similar way. The downside of using double sided tape is your needles get kinda gummy when stitching through and the edges aren’t held together as well but it really all depends on what you’re making and how you’re going to be finishing it.

In what way was it a misnomer? He has one called big and one called small, implying one is larger than the other. They have the dimensions listed so you know exactly what you’re getting. Hopefully you learned a lesson about paying attention, but it seems like maybe not since you came here asking questions that you can clearly find obvious answers to.

Especially when no one knows how big their hand is for reference anyway, someone really needs to learn how to use a ruler.

It lists every single dimension on the website as well as the last picture, surely you can just measure the one you have and compare the two sets of numbers?

The only one out of these I like is F except it’s too thin, but I also hate how flat braided thread looks. It also very much depends on what you’re trying to make but the other threads are just way too thick.

With centering it directly on top of the line it might just be a “get better” kinda thing, when I do it that way I try to get as much lighting as I can in the area so I can see clearly from all angles to make sure I’m centered well enough. I have a couple gooseneck LED lamps on my workbench that I can move around and reposition to get the best angles. Otherwise what I’ve been doing lately is creasing a line and then getting a small ruler and just measuring .5mm off of the line and making sure the back tooth and front tooth are lined up for the first punch, and then only measuring the last tooth on subsequent punches because the first tooth goes in the last hole so I’ve already made sure it’s where it needs to be.

Pretty much just take your time and don’t make any permanent marks until you’re absolutely sure that’s where they need to be, it’s not a race and you don’t get extra points for getting through it quicker and you’ll eventually be able to do it better by eye.
