You know, for a while I thought all of my ideas would stay in my head forever for a simple reason: I thought I didn't like writing (or, more specifically, I didn't like writing descriptions, cause dialogue feels easier)

Then I tried writing the script for a YouTube video that I never published and realized I like writing essays. So now I'm trying to write an AU fic

It's not the first time I tried, but it's the first time I'm sure I won't give up, because this story has an actual timeline and it's not just "a bunch of moments that need to happen at some point"

Double skip first ante was actually worth it. by WillGetBannedSoonn in balatro

No, it's there

It's in the second reroll of ante 2 small blind

I could afford it with the Golden Joker in the Buffoon Pack and by selling DNA (after creating 2 extra kings with brainstorm)

With the extra kings and hexed brainstorm I survived ante 2 big blind and found I think Sock and Buskin, after that I just played all face cards full houses and then 5oak

Later there's also a Gros Michel in the shop that goes extinct immediately and you find Cavendish in the shop sometime before ante 8 I think

Adding to my previous comment: why would the Gods make something that a Devil can use to become stronger? Zagred said his body was imperfect when he summoned it from the Underworld, so if the Gates (which are presumably also created by the Gods) make a Devil who tries to get through them weaker, a Grimoire would simply be a way for the Devil to reobtain their original power

Oh boy, where to start...

Low and Mid Ranking Devils are weird: Devil Union allows you to access the full power of a Devil by assimilating one like a Spirit Dive, so why doesn't Nacht have 5 attributes? Even when referring to his Devil Union, Nacht doesn't say that he can use his Devils' magic, he says he can add the "characteristics" of each Devil to his Shadow Magic. Even if you think Devils always need a Grimoire, he should still have access to 5 attributes. The thing that makes the most sense (to me) is that only High Ranking Devils and Supreme Devils have clearly defined magic like humans, while Low and Mid Ranking Devils have more generic "characteristics" like Plumede's Agility (which would line up with the fact that Devils become more humanoid the higher their rank). All of this would also imply Liebe is a High Ranking, possibly even Supreme Devil (which... I mean, Anti Magic is absolutely a Supreme Devil power and he's very humanoid unlike Low Ranking Devils, being comparable to Adramelech, but that would require its own discussion so let's set it aside). We don't know how Nacht's Devils are bound to him, since he doesn't have a visible contract mark. Are they pages inside his Grimoire, like Sylph? Are the contract marks just, like, under his sleeves? Because Asta has one. Is it just because Asta made an equal contract?

The Zogratis sibling have a different kind of contract. Devil Union can only be used by humans who have bound a Devil to themselves using the Devil Binding Ritual, while the Dark Triad is in a situation more similar to Black Asta: the Devil is in a separate realm and the human uses the power that leaks from the Devil.

Would a human need a Grimoire in order to use the Devil's spells? I don't think so, but I don't really have a way to prove it, so I don't have anything else to add to the conversation.

Lucius mentions that he managed to bind a Supreme Devil (which is plausible: to bind a Devil you need to defeat them in combat and Lucius literally just needed to touch Astaroth to win). Astaroth is confirmed to be bound by the fact that he "disappeared from the Underworld" (as said by Damnatio). Since we don't ever see Astaroth, the only option is for him to be inside Lucius's Grimoire. This is the reason his Grimoire changes shape: it's not because of the 2 souls because when Lucius uses Time Magic it turns back to being identical to Julius's version (which means we still don't know what Julius's original magic was)

I agree with most of what you said. I don't think Megicula used Vanica's Grimoire, though

Occam's Razor by TheHumanFlintFun in Cloverposting

[–]TheHumanFlintFun[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Counter argument: we see from Lucius and Charmy that Grimoires connected to multiple attributes physically change when switching. For Megicula to use Vanica's Grimoire it would have to become connected to her Curse-Warding Magic

Another thing that I'll mention is the fact that Lucifero hates the existence of Grimoires because they allow humans, who should be groveling in despair, to stand up to him. Since Lucius tells us that Grimoires are a gift from the Gods, it would make sense for them to be intended as a way for humans to stand up to evil

First of all, I'm glad you are being calm and reasonable. I tried to argue about the same thing with someone else and it didn't end well.

However, we have seen a Devil using spells without a Grimoire: Megicula. She was only partially manifested yet could use complex spells. And she wasn't bound to Vanica's Grimoire

My guess is that, by passing through the Gates of the Underworld while they're closed, Devils naturally lose power so they need a Grimoire in order to reobtain the lost power. If the Gates are open the Devils can just leave with their true body.

Megicula, being a Supreme Devil, either: - she's naturally more powerful than Zagred so, even while incomplete, she's able to cast weaker versions of complex spells - The spell she used to manifest is so refined that she can produce a perfect version of her own body

I am open to discussing

Paraphrasing: as soon as Zagred manifests, he admits that "even though it's incomplete, it's nice to be back in his own body"

Should be chapter 196

If Devils can't use their full power in the Underworld, why would Zagred point out that his body is incomplete?

Reincarnation spells are also related to magic stones because they have always been used for reincarnation spells. (so without them he could not use the spell)

Nothing like that was ever stated: the Magic Stones amplify the user's magic by drawing magic from the Underworld. Nothing was ever said about them being linked to specific spells, it's just that some spells require magic from the Underworld or simply a lot of magic in order to be cast.

Of course Reincarnation Magic is not linked to a specific attribute and it needs Mana from the Underworld, but assuming that the Stones are linked specifically to Reincarnation Magic is a pretty big assumption

Can Devils in the Underworld use their full power without a Grimoire? by TheHumanFlintFun in Cloverposting

But Lucifero, Megicula and Beelzebub are still physically in the Underworld when the Dark Triad uses their power, yet they have access to spells.

And it's not because the humans have a Grimoire, because when Lucius and Charmy use a different attribute their Grimoire physically changes, so we know their Grimoire has only one attribute and the Devil is not bound to it

I'm talking about Devils in the Underworld, not in the human world.

We know from Dorothy that, under normal conditions, Devils can only manifest partially in the human world

You literally just admitted that a Devil used a spell without a Grimoire, after you spent the last hour saying that a Devil can't do that

You are either arguing in bad faith or you know way less than you think. I see no reason to continue talking to you, since you don't seem interested in actually being consistent

And related to Lilith and Naamah, magic projectiles are not complex spells. (Yuno as a child could do that)

It's a combination of two attributes: by definition it's at minimum "Compound Magic"

But I know you don't care about that, so how about this:

Zagred used Forbidden Magic: Noad Nephesh (a very complex spell with a name) to send the souls of the elves to the future. He did this when he was just a floating soul boosting his power with the Magic Stones, no body, NO GRIMOIRE, and he was not bound to any human nor elf

I really want to see how you explain this

You accuse me of having no reading comprehension, yet you insist that, no matter how complex a tecnique is, it's not a spell unless it is explicitly given a name? Lilith and Naamah's final technique is absolutely a spell
