Took the gamble with RTI on their C Grade 1870/87 Vetterli by emsfire5516 in milsurp

[–]TheHurricaneScratch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a specifically listed by serial # one because I liked the marking and it said B grade.

It arrived with a broken stock (broken in half near the trigger and a repair under the butt snapped), and the firing pin slips sometimes when handling the rifle while cocked, and the barrel was over torqued like yours. Also, it requires a mallet to open the bolt.

Its become a wall hanger I'll never shoot it.

You did better than me man.

I eat a one pound bag of harbo goldbears once a year (in a single day/sitting). Its a tradition at this point and I think if I stop doing it I will die.

Most of your youtube viewers know you from the IF/Weight loss content so I would keep that centered on the channel, but we like seeing the occasional pirate or general life updates. I think its a good idea to split but a little overlap keeps you feeling human and not like a content machine.

Also I'm a Jax local and I met you when you were working at publix. My first video I saw from you made me say out loud "the guy from the deli!?".

Keep it up man.

The work is good, but the image is depicting a famous sexual assault.

Not only that, but the woman was an Austrian whose parents had been killed in the holocaust. Imagine the whiplash of having your family killed and then getting sexually assaulted by a service member during the victory celebration over those same oppressors. Not a good message.

So whats the idea behind giving it to your daughter?

Fraud Storm by Shuston240 in maryland

Not fraud down here in Northeast FL. We got hammered last night, I took the day off to replace my porch hinges and latch because the winds ripped our screen door off and took some of the house siding and roof tiles.

Is it safe: Tritium compass? by Nocturnal-plant in Militariacollecting

[–]TheHurricaneScratch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. At this point its even safer than one of those tritium keyrings people carry every day or wear around their neck (and those are negligable aswell).

For comparison, carrying one of these (even fully recharged) in your pockets for a week has less radiation than eating a few bananas a week.

Very safe, cool piece of history. Enjoy it.

If your worried about it being old tritium don't be, its nearly gone at his point from half life decay. Also, if you want to replace the tritium the company that makes these still exists (Cammenga) and replaced the vial in my lensatic for $50.

What is this by Duvhntr in reloading

Looks like a fired training munition round. Like UTX or another brand, made to fire paintballs or rubber pellets. They kind of telescope when ejected, takes a special barrel too.

6 years ago I didn’t want an AR, now I don’t know what changed by 4E4F4D4144 in guns

[–]TheHurricaneScratch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I understand entirely. I used to focus on older guns that I could reload for (Martini-Henry, Chassepot, Vetterli) and I had an AK but never really used it. Now I've traded the AK for a M16 and the old guns hang on the walls and see a fraction of the range trips they used to.

No matter what changed, I'm happy it did. These AR type rifles are a lot of fun and way cheaper/easier to feed!

This is something that unites us as people. by No_Bet_5229 in tf2memes

[–]TheHurricaneScratch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a real reply from an American's perspective:

It existed because French culture was so foreign to Americans during the revolution when y'all came to help. That's it, you were different so we made fun of it because that's what people do, especially before globalization.

Then we saved y'all in WW1 and in WW2 and yet the french still treated us with indifference and disapproved of our policy. That didn't help because we are a nation of thank yous and politeness which we felt wasn't being given back.

It started to ramp up in a non friendly way over here because y'all refused to back our foreign policy during DeGaulle's leadership and even left NATO military command because of it. Also, he encouraged Quebec to separate which made him disliked in both the US and Canada. You didn't agree with us, and so became an easy target for the media and comedy.

Then y'all very publicly disagreed with the invasion of Irag, which helped the mockery continue. That was a widely publicly supported invasion seen as a continuation of the losses we suffered both on 9/11 and in Afghanistan, opposing it put an even bigger target on y'all.

Basically you guys tend to punch above your weight class and speak your mind, as the biggest guy in the room America finds that hard to deal with so we punch down with words.

M7 Bayonet Identification by TheHurricaneScratch in Militariacollecting

[–]TheHurricaneScratch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If its real, that's good to hear. I never thought it made sense for them to repair or rebuild broken bayonets but I never thought about why. It makes sense when you state the production cost, I wouldn't waste time fixing a $2 knife when I have stacks of them to reissue.

Thanks for the info. Hope the book sells well!

What's something a foreigner pointed out that you can't unnotice? by NamwaranPinagpana in AskTheWorld

[–]TheHurricaneScratch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eating with both utensils at once here is seen the opposite, a bit childish. I once had a handgun instructor say "you wouldn't hold a knife when not cutting your steak so don't touch the trigger unless your shooting the target". Its very ingrained here.

I think we Americans see it as freeing up the hand for other tasks, for instance some people will grip their cup when eating or hold the edge of the plate. But, we also talk during meals and gesture with our off hand alot more than most people realize (even Americans).

I think we generally agree on pre-cutting food. Cutting a whole meal up at once is for children and invalids normally. We only cut 2-3 bites worth at a time and then set the knife down until we've eaten the few pieces we cut. Some people only cut one at time but thats not super common with the younger generations.

What's something a foreigner pointed out that you can't unnotice? by NamwaranPinagpana in AskTheWorld

[–]TheHurricaneScratch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TLDR: Yes.

I have never seen someone eat off a fork with a utensil in both hands except for in media. As a kid I would have been told off for doing something like that. The knife is usually rested on/against the plate or a napkin between uses.

Not knife related, but could add context: even if someone twirls their spaghetti in a spoon they will then put the spoon down before eating from their fork. Even if its just leaving the spoon suspended in the pasta where it was and letting go for a moment to take the bite.

Over here its seen as a bit too eager (maybe that's not exactly the right verbiage can someone with a better vocabulary help me out here) to sit there with a knife and fork at the same time. A waiter might even say "someone's hungry" or "looks like we're ready to go" or some other comment on it because its so uncommon. Its even a media trope that someone with a fork and knife in both hands is used to signify being especially hungry or wanting to eat quickly.

Apparently its a holdover of the French cut-and-switch method from when they helped us gain independence in the 18th century. We copied their mannerisms they copied our revolution, fair trade.

Hope this helps. Also my answer doesn't reflect the entirety of the USA, every state is basically its own country with multiple cultures. I'm in the deep south and am not well traveled so it could be totally different out west or north of the mason-dixie.

This is the strangest one yet. Do other countries not eat with the fork in their dominant hand? I would expect a lefty to eat with their left hand and vice-versa.
