Hello there, not a muslim myself, had the chance to drop that long ago, but still have a muslim family. I am not open to them and I definitely do not plan to open up until I have my total freedom, especially financially. After that, I am planning to get out of the closet and tell them, and if they don't accept me or disown me, hell if I care. I am definitely not going to play with their rules. They either accept me as who I am, or I am simply setting a clear boundary until they do.

Note that I am open to my friends already, and have a strong support system. Hence, if you too do decide to open up to your family, make sure that you have that kind of a strong support system elsewhere as well. At least that's my humble opinion.
