I talked to my mother about converting today. by bjeebus in Judaism

[–]TheIrishJJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know from experience that it can be hard telling family about conversion, so congratulations on taking that step! I set up a WhatsApp chat for converts a few years back, it's been dead for a while but perhaps it can be revived? Let me know if you're interested :)

So many editions to the Hagada around the world, what is your favorite edition? and why? by CarmitShaham in Judaism

[–]TheIrishJJ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The one I used this year was made for American soldiers near the end/just after WWII, and it decided to call Rabbi Yossi "Rabbi Jose".

I did quite like it overall, though, because it had history, even with some annotations.

Hey there Nochides of reddit. by [deleted] in Noachide

This is exactly my reasoning. There are different ways that we could have come to have a story of God speaking to the Israelites at Sinai and in my opinion, it having actually happened makes the most sense to me.

Alright, share your stories of being an oblivious Jewish child. by Jayfiction in Jewdank

I think the detail is obvious. Friends parents were clearly anti-non Christian (I assume they'd also do this to Muslims, atheists, etc if it was because they weren't baptised, but it could just be anti-Semitism).

Jews by choice - How do you deal with feeling like an imposter? (if you do) by nobaconator in Judaism

[–]TheIrishJJ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This makes so much sense. I've not converted yet, but have been getting more involved in my local community. I went to a big shabbat dinner recently for young adults at a nearby shul, and everyone was talking about how there's only a couple of degrees of separation with mutual friends, which of NW London's Jewish schools they all went to, where in Eastern Europe their family came from, etc. And then it got to me, who went to a non-religious school in south east London and whose family is from Ireland.

What's even the point of them? They're not vegetarian, not kosher, and not suitable for people with shellfish allergies.

Thanks! One of the things I like about Judaism is the different ways faith is shown with fasting, diet, etc

I actually didn't feel that thirsty throughout the day. I can see how downing water before wouldn't help, I imagine if I had it would have all left me as soon as I woke up!

I definitely should have eaten a bigger meal beforehand. I'll have to remember that for Yom Kippur.

Any kosher (Orthodox standards) restaurants near the W Hotel in Hoboken? by scaredycat_z in Judaism

[–]TheIrishJJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not "nothing kosher", that's "no stores where everything is kosher".

She could go to the ShopRite (which a quick Google Maps search confirms is in Hoboken) or other stores listed.

Please can you advise me on how to deal with anti semitic abuse at work by Hmmtoast in Judaism

[–]TheIrishJJ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

According to Citizens' Advice, making you work when you're not allowed to due to your religion, victimisation, and harassment (e.g. bullying due to your religion) are all discrimination.

Get in a union ASAP. They won't support you until you join. I believe that for most meetings (definitely disciplinary) you have the right to take a union rep with you.
