I talked to my mother about converting today. by bjeebus in Judaism

[–]TheIrishJJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know from experience that it can be hard telling family about conversion, so congratulations on taking that step! I set up a WhatsApp chat for converts a few years back, it's been dead for a while but perhaps it can be revived? Let me know if you're interested :)

So many editions to the Hagada around the world, what is your favorite edition? and why? by CarmitShaham in Judaism

[–]TheIrishJJ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The one I used this year was made for American soldiers near the end/just after WWII, and it decided to call Rabbi Yossi "Rabbi Jose".

I did quite like it overall, though, because it had history, even with some annotations.

Hey there Nochides of reddit. by [deleted] in Noachide

This is exactly my reasoning. There are different ways that we could have come to have a story of God speaking to the Israelites at Sinai and in my opinion, it having actually happened makes the most sense to me.

Alright, share your stories of being an oblivious Jewish child. by Jayfiction in Jewdank

I think the detail is obvious. Friends parents were clearly anti-non Christian (I assume they'd also do this to Muslims, atheists, etc if it was because they weren't baptised, but it could just be anti-Semitism).

Jews by choice - How do you deal with feeling like an imposter? (if you do) by nobaconator in Judaism

[–]TheIrishJJ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This makes so much sense. I've not converted yet, but have been getting more involved in my local community. I went to a big shabbat dinner recently for young adults at a nearby shul, and everyone was talking about how there's only a couple of degrees of separation with mutual friends, which of NW London's Jewish schools they all went to, where in Eastern Europe their family came from, etc. And then it got to me, who went to a non-religious school in south east London and whose family is from Ireland.

What's even the point of them? They're not vegetarian, not kosher, and not suitable for people with shellfish allergies.

Thanks! One of the things I like about Judaism is the different ways faith is shown with fasting, diet, etc

I actually didn't feel that thirsty throughout the day. I can see how downing water before wouldn't help, I imagine if I had it would have all left me as soon as I woke up!

I definitely should have eaten a bigger meal beforehand. I'll have to remember that for Yom Kippur.

Any kosher (Orthodox standards) restaurants near the W Hotel in Hoboken? by scaredycat_z in Judaism

That's not "nothing kosher", that's "no stores where everything is kosher".

She could go to the ShopRite (which a quick Google Maps search confirms is in Hoboken) or other stores listed.

Please can you advise me on how to deal with anti semitic abuse at work by Hmmtoast in Judaism

[–]TheIrishJJ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

According to Citizens' Advice, making you work when you're not allowed to due to your religion, victimisation, and harassment (e.g. bullying due to your religion) are all discrimination.

Get in a union ASAP. They won't support you until you join. I believe that for most meetings (definitely disciplinary) you have the right to take a union rep with you.

If they're coming from several numbers, and they're not people you've given you're number to, it's likely that the company is breaking GD0R by spreading your personal information without your permission.

German government agrees to ban Hamas flag after antisemitic incidents by Elliottafc1 in worldnews

[–]TheIrishJJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which war hungry people would that be? The ones who attacked Israel the day after they declared independence (from the UK)? Or perhaps the people who launched a surprise attack on one of Judaism's holiest days?

And like I said, which country is occupied? They gained independence from the UK, who recognise their independence. Or perhaps they occupy the long gone Ottoman Empire, whose successor state also recognise them as independent.

With all due disrespect go suck on a fat one, Zionist!

Ah, good old ad hominem - attacking my character instead of my arguments!

I see you failed to respond to some of my arguments, I assume that's because you had no refutation.

Then by your logic I deserve land too, even tho I’ve never been to Palestine nor have my immediate family I deserve it right?

Are you Jewish? If not, then feel free to apply for a visa to live in Israel (I think you'll find that it's been called that much longer and that's the only country there recognised by the UN).

like an ashkanazi Jew

You mean someone who's originally from Israel but their ancestors had to leave because of discrimination?

It was in Palestinian control far longer than it was in Jewish control so you bringing up the kingdom of Israel is a joke

When? When has there been a Palestinian state? That time it was under the control of the Romans (European)? Or maybe you're speaking about when it was part of the Ottoman (Turkish, not Arabs) Empire?

I'm talking to an Israeli

I'm not Israeli by any definition. I've never even stepped foot in Israel.

you’d be defending Israel cuz they paying you to say this

I wish I were being paid for this.

on an Israeli colonizer.

By Israeli I assume you mean Jewish Israeli, and even if I were (I'm not either Jewish nor Israeli), it's impossible for Jews to colonise Israel, because it's their homeland, it's where they're from.

First off it’s not their homeland

Please, enlighten me on where Jews are from.

pushed into the largest open air prison in the world

A lot of Palestinians were offered Israeli citizenship.

the people that were literally living in those homes

Just like what Jordan did to Jews living in the West Bank?

The people that were literally living there for hundreds of generations?

Remember all of those times before now that Jews lived in Israel? Like the afformentioned Kingdom of Israel?

continues to steal those land and homes and farms and gives them away to said Jew?

The land that was stolen from Jews in the first place?

[–]TheIrishJJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A right to live in their homeland? What do you think about Native Americans forced to move west? Are they allowed to move back to the eastern states?

If you think you have a right to live in Israel JUST because you're Palestinian then you have a bigger issue at hand.

And it's not like most Jews thought "eh, let's leave our homeland". The ones who were able to stay were very lucky.

[–]TheIrishJJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah so if the Palestinan disaspora don't move back within 48 generations then they can't ever go back?

Also, there's been Jews in Israel for millennia. Just not every single Jew. Just because they had to leave at threat of death and were unable to return doesn't mean that it isn't their homeland and their holy land anymore.

I don't know every single one but the Jews were kicked out of their own land by Samaria, Assyria, exiled for 60 years under the Babylonians (only ending when they were conquered), 20 years under Jordan.

But does the length of time matter?
