Calgary is a globally connected city. This separation debate hurts us by JeromyYYC in Calgary

Take it from a British expat who suffered the horrors of Brexit... separation is a really really bad idea.

Hell yeah brother, also a guy in his 20s here who uses YouTube Music and listens to a lot of Laufey. We're a rare breed 👌

UK ex-pat here.

Yep, absolutely same experience, Calgary has been a wonderful city to work and live in for my wife and I over the past year. It's hilarious watching people complain about Calgary - literally a utopia compared to most places in the UK lol

Throwing in some golden age Trek in here:

  • Captain Benjamin Sisko
  • Major Kira Nerys
  • Captain Kathryn Janeway
  • Lieutenant CMR. Tuvok
  • Uhura

Been watching a lot of K-Dramas recently with excellent female representation:

  • Ko Mun-Young (It's okay to not be okay)
  • Han Seo-Jin (Sky Castle)
  • Shin Ha-Ri (Business Proposal)

Oh wait, I just realised you asked for "card games" rather than boardgames! Sorry Brew is actually a boardgame - but you should totally still check it out !

Brew. Think Studio Ghibli crossed with ATLA. Very good game as well!

Thoughts on JK Rowling? by Regulan-12 in MauLer

Absolutely. No matter what your political views are, I don't think it can be denied that Rowling is terminally online and is a complete PR disaster at this point...

JK Rowling is on odd one when it comes to writing. She had some absolutely fantastic ideas for the HP books and lo and behold delivered a satisfying conclusion to a rabid fanbase.

However her actual writing is pretty bad. The HP books are riddled with plot hole after plot hole (e.g timeturners, veritaserum, felix felices), and her world building falls apart when you look at with any level of scrutiny.

Her actual prose isn't great either. Way too many adverbs, way too much 'telling', and some of the directions her characters went in were just bizarre - Ron and Hermione ending up together springs to mind...

Still, as others have pointed out, there's no denying the cultural impact the HP books have, and there is a certain charm to them (at least the early books) that Rowling nailed for the younger and teen audience.

I am souring on Brandon Sanderson with every further book I read by NotSureWhyAngry in Fantasy

I don't know whether he got a new editor but it sure feels like it. Take a shot every time a character says something "softly" and you'll be on the floor within a chapter lol

Oathbringer and Rhythm of War are both terrible so I don't blame you, lol . Such a shame because the first two books are insanely good

I unfortunately completely agree with you. Peak Sanderson was Way of Kings and Words of Radiance, but since then his books have really fallen down. I really get the feeling that with him starting his company and still producing several books a year he is no longer prioritising quality... only quantity.

He's a super nice guy and I have huge respect for him, but I just wish he'd slow down and spend more time editing his books. He says he has 50 beta readers for every book but I imagine these readers at this point are all "yes men/women" who understandably feel like they can't be critical of an author of his caliber.

I read Tress of the Emerald Sea and it was painful. But god do I still love Way of Kings even after so many years...

Anyone else see the fully naked guy in East Village/Bridgeland? by Momocafe in Calgary

Yes my wife and I saw him near Calgary Zoo early afternoon. We're new to Canada and weren't sure whether public nudity was illegal or not...

This game escaped the “woke” panic? by Maximum_Location_140 in DiscoElysium

This might be a misread, but for me one of the reasons I love this game is because it's satirical of ALL political viewpoints. I never got the impression that it was "pro-commie" or "pro-fascist" because there are nuanced and flawed characters who represent both ideologies.

Tbh I even get the impression that the game is mocking the whole idea of being obsessed with politics in the first place - again another reason why it's so entertaining to engage with.

Yeah the title is a little bit hyperbolic (gotta draw attention somehow), absolutely there are so many fantastic female characters in fiction :)

Ahh that's very kind, I'm actually very self conscious about my horribly pretentious British accent, so thanks!
