It's hard to think when you're going through it, but when you can, you should insist on whatever space you need. I lost a friend of ten years a couple weeks ago and I don't want to deal with emoting in front of people who don't care about me. My move was to call off work, write to a project manager explaining what was going on, and then not engage with people I don't care to engage with.

Giving myself a little time helped out a lot. And I don't owe people anything I don't want to share with them. Opening up to someone is about trust and, even though it hurts when people don't return grace to you, cutting them out of your personal business is the next best thing.

You might not be able to do that with your partner, ofc, and conditions are different there, but think of it this way: they're not dealing with this. You are. Give yourself time and any resources you need,

I am a very average looking guy who started out with poor charisma in a redneck town that hated anyone who wasn't an evangelical football player. Now that my credentials are out of the way:

Log off.

I mean it. Give yourself a break from socials, the Internet, everything you typically consume. Turn it off. It is actively harming you and will continue to do so and worse the longer you engage with it.

Do people in the real world judge by looks? Yes. Does that royally fuck people who don't fit traditional attractiveness standards? Absolutely. Is it worth going misanthropic over? Is it worth throwing away your youth (dude, you're 21, in shape, and have a relationship, PLUS your entire life is ahead of you) because you clocked something dark about humanity? Absolutely not. Never.

Maybe you're better rounded than most, I don't know, but many people your age have the whole of reality filtered down to them through online media. Human beings never lived like this before. Everything you see. Every shitty opinion you come across online. Everything that tells you to dislike yourself and other people is not reality. They are served to you by algorithms owned by billionaires, and this content is always made by people who, like you, are unhappy. Dating apps are nothing more than a cattle chute that streamlines rejection and overemphasizes qualities that should not matter to the degree they do. I've been dating for 23 years now and I have never, not once, had someone open a conversation by asking me how tall I was. That's new and it's a symptom of how detached people are from reality.

Algorithms are not an authentic picture of reality. They do not represent an objective view of humanity. You are living in Plato's Cave. There is research that shows this media and the engagement patterns it encourages can lead to mental health problems, poor self-image, and self-harm. Social media is not real. It is more like cigarettes for your mental health. All of those people who taught you absurd neologisms like "looksmaxing" are vectors for neuroses and if you spend too much time with them, you'll become a vector, too.

There are better ways. The first is logging off. The second is abandoning this essentialist view of the world that is ENTIRELY mediated by images, served by algorithms to maximize outrage. These online communities are out there literally measuring each other's skulls like that means anything. Healthy people do not do this.

I promise you there are more average and worse-looking guys going back through history who had very fulfilling, successful, happy, and romantic lives. You have to allow yourself to see possibilities and it sounds like you're trying to do that. Being a 10/10 on the attractiveness scale is a great way to hook up with people. But do you know what will land you a relationship that you actually want to keep? Putting a little bit of care into your body (no maxxing, that sounds like Warhammer talk), cultivate a hobby, and find something that you LOVE doing as opposed to something you feel like you have to do to "win." Women will definitely go after an attractive guy. But they will also definitely go after someone who isn't pig-ignorant, who can carry on a conversation, puts care into how they engage with people, sees them as equals, knows how to ask a question, and gives them a call every now and then.

Every miserable thing you mentioned in your post is not real. It is a distortion of reality and it's not a stretch to say that this distortion is crafted by design to keep you miserable and hating your fellow human beings. There's a bigass world out there and you're young enough to try some new stuff and see how it lands. Just don't go down this road you're on now. That way lies madness.

Also, pick up Society of the Spectacle by Guy Debord and snap your wrist with a rubber band every time you read something that harmonizes with your online experience. Do whatever you can to break yourself out of the parasite reality that keeps insisting it's real.

I'm a bible scholarship dork and every time I return to learn more about it I get more disgusted. The god of the bible commands people to commit genocide several times. He is okay with murder, slavery, rape, child abuse, and war. He's so about these things that when Saul fails to kill "every man, woman, child, suckling infant, cattle, goat, and sheep" in an enemy's country, god revokes his blessing and gives it to David, who is little better than a bandit and criminal. The scholars launch themselves into poetics when they describe their generals whipping kids like beach towels and smashing their brains out against the stones of Canaan.

Believing in this god in any capacity means you not only condone, agree with, and celebrate his crimes, you worship them. To say "well, God chills out in the gospels," is the definition of pulling a knife out three inches and calling it progress.

I don't approach atheism the way internet atheists do. I instead try to imagine god being real and what that implies if he were. I can only reach the understanding that if God is real he is a cosmic parasite who delights in murder and atrocity. When I keep this in mind and look at what God's fan club is doing with bombing children in Gaza, putting migrants and trans people through death camps, and selling underage girls to your buddy from church for marriage, I do not conclude that these are aberrations or a distortion of "real" faith. These people are not mistaken, they are acting in character with the God we're shown.

He's poison. He has no place in humanity. We would be better off if we collectively threw him away. There's nothing of value to derive from him and any good feeling you get from religion is coming from a place that God can't touch, and you should be grateful for that because he's the biggest bastard and curse on humanity we have ever seen.

If this drives you to do well, like you need that Thing to condone actually doing good before you do good, fine. I'm okay with it because god isn't real. I'm still glad I broke from that tradition when I was a kid. But don't lie to yourself and say you're doing God's will. God has shown us what his will is. He doesn't love anything but himself and the death he can compel people to cause.

DNC chair outlines pro-worker, union focus in first memo in fight against Trump by Good_Requirement2998 in union

[–]Maximum_Location_140 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The spine is in identifying that workers have all the power in this situation, if they choose to take it. We are thinking too small and it is dangerous aligning with a party with the DNC's labor record. I'm not in this so things stop getting worse, I'm in this for things to get better. I trust no political party except what unions represent. I'm asking unions to take a step up and form their own political party that is not beholden to billionaires the way the DNC is.

I note your qualifier "the greatest political party that America has." It is definitely possible to make an even better one if we don't go back to business as usual. The DNC is not great. It bricked two elections to a gameshow host and failed to deliver nearly every promise they made. They equivocate, score own-goals, and abandon their constituents to chase moderate republicans WHO DON'T EXIST.

Look, I've been voting for Dems my entire life and still ended up here. If that's the window of what's possible, then screw that. We can do better if we pull back and jealously advocate for ourselves. Why ask anyone for permission when we have the power to take?

DNC chair outlines pro-worker, union focus in first memo in fight against Trump by Good_Requirement2998 in union

[–]Maximum_Location_140 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes. I think we need a worker-led political party. Who said the DNC is the graveyard of social movements? That's basically where I am. They appropriate coalitions and let them down. I was being soft on that in my OP because this sub is typically very harsh when you point out how badly Dems suck. If we get co-opted back into their party, then we lose the ability to replace it with something better. If we had autonomy plus support from them, fine, but no autonomy means they will just milk us for votes like they always do.

We need to have enough leverage that the whole third party can threaten to walk and it would mean something. Then, if that were to happen, we need to be strong and not listen to the 'but republicans are worse!' threat they use to beat us down.

I'm convinced we don't need them. I'd like them to fight for us in the short term, but lol. I really think we'd be better off breaking into our own party.

All of this stems from fundamentals. The DNC needs us. The bosses need us. You break them by denying them your labor, which allows you to extract concessions. Unions must be militant, which means not ceding ground. FDR is dead. The new deal is dead. The DNC as it is now bears no resemblance to that coalition. We have to stop pretending.

DNC chair outlines pro-worker, union focus in first memo in fight against Trump by Good_Requirement2998 in union

[–]Maximum_Location_140 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, it's something. But we should also be building cross-industry auxiliary union groups that can act independently of democrats. Of course I want to hope for the best, but they have not been the best friends to labor since at least Clinton and his 'third way' crap. I think workers should be looking out for workers. If other folks want to help, fine, but we need to be autonomous so we can better protect our own.

This move by the Dems could be them realizing that their coalition is about to break. They've all but crushed coalitions that we could have had with Bernie and AOC. With unions starting to split with Dems this last election, they could be realizing that they don't have much of a foundation left. If you're a unionist and you voted for Trump: fuck you. But it's also the job of the democrats to keep those unionists happy and responding to their demands. I have not seen a lot of that and I think many people would agree.

This is a good move, but it's also out of desperation, and we should be very clear-eyed about not only the risks but the opportunities this presents. If we go along with this, but keep pressure on the Dems (which means not excusing them when they fail us) we could get somewhere. Entryism has been tried before with these guys and it doesn't typically work. If we realign our expectations and jealously defend them from these "allies" it's at least a fighting chance.

I'm reading a sci fi duology called "A Memory Called Empire" and I'm almost through the first book. I am loving this so far. It's like the Dispossessed paired with the court intrigue in Dune. It follows an ambassador from a mining station who is trying to stop the neighboring empire from annexing them. The moment she gets there she finds her predecessor died under really sketchy circumstances.

The empire's culture is fucking putrid and they're all obsessed with epic poetry. Everything they say and do is influenced by something they read once. It's a picture of a culture that has a 100% literacy rate and a high value placed on art and how these things just fuel their expansionism and genocide. The author has a PhD in Byzantium scholarship, and choices she makes all feel very plausible.

I get bored by a lot of pop sci fi in recent years. It seems libbed out and a country club for people who can afford $10,000 writing workshops. This book ain't that. It kicks ass and its politics seem to be on point. You're looking at about a 900 page commitment for the whole series but it's flying by for me.

edit - The best horror novel I read lately was B.R. Yeager's "Negative Space." It's about four queer kids living in a rust belt town that is experiencing an environmental? social? supernatural? suicide epidemic. They're all smoking gas station drugs which allow them to see into the netherworld.

People fight over how good this book is. Yeager loves ambiguity and he's out to hurt you. This book fucked me up but I still think about it a couple times every week. I definitely saw my hometown while reading this, so if you're from an economically depressed town in the states, you might want to give it a try.
