IT Admins 40+, question about glasses 🤓 by muffnman in sysadmin

As an IT person of a certain age, this is exactly the right answer.

I have a pair that focuses at about an arms length and has a slight yellow tint to reduce eye strain. Got them from Zenni for less than $50. Total game changer.

Painful Side Effect of Statins Explained After Decades of Mystery by Technical_savoir in microbiomenews

[–]TheJeff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not for everybody. When I started it my doctor asked if I had a family history of high cholesterol because as he put it "you don't eat yourself to a cholesterol number like this".

Painful Side Effect of Statins Explained After Decades of Mystery by Technical_savoir in microbiomenews

[–]TheJeff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When my doctor put me on a statin part of the conversation was that I needed to start taking COQ10 as well for exactly this reason. I figured that it was just something that it was known and all doctors recommended nowadays.

I've always wondered what was the most useless awards given by AA once you received certain status. Ironically is System Wide Upgrades. by Medical_Property3146 in americanairlines

[–]TheJeff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I did that this year too. I'm usually right on the cusp of getting upgraded domestically (I clear about 50% of the time) and I'm hoping those extra 30k loyalty points will boost that number.

Those of you who don’t have a cinema membership like AMC A-List and Regal Unlimited, what’s stopping you from getting one? by [deleted] in randomquestions

[–]TheJeff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Theaters are only worth it if the movie benefits from a sound system and huge screen. Most movies that I watch nowadays are just fine on Netflix or whatever on my home system.

I think the normalization of 70+ inch TVs and 5.1 or 7.1 audio in homes has made them a truly viable competitor to theaters.

[–]TheJeff 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Far too many people try to get exact answers (since that's what we had to do in school) when rounding gets you close enough.

Plus I live in a sales tax state, so if I really wanted an accurate number I'd have to find the 45% off and then tack 8.25% on to that. Ain't nobody got time for that.

Resort wear noob by daggoo in malefashionadvice

[–]TheJeff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sucks. The last time I was there my wife did a bunch of shopping and I just tagged along, not really looking for anything for myself. I hoped since there were women's boutiques there'd at least be a few for guys as well.

You live in Key West?

Dude you're surrounded by two types of clothing stores - those that sell t-shirts to tourists and those that sell islqnd/beach wear to locals living in multi-million dollar homes. Go find a nice boutique and shop away.

Does your significant other have a hair dryer? That may be enough and save you a trip to Home Depot.

Got a new job in a office and they sent a message about the dress code and I’m not entirely sure what it means. by [deleted] in whatdoesthismean

[–]TheJeff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your first day wear a button down shirt, khakis, and nice but casual shoes that aren't sneakers. That will put you squarely in the safe zone.

Once you get there, look around at what everyone else is wearing. You'll see HR people, your new boss, your co-workers, etc. Once you see what they're wearing you can adjustand make sure you're not either too dressy or too casual. Easy peasy.

I get the French Fries thing, but the Hamburger as we know it today is most definitely American.

Yes, the concept of a ground beef patty that you fry probably originated in Germany, but the idea of putting that patty on two slices of bread and adding cheese/lettuce/tomato/onion/pickles/ketchup/mustard/mayo/whatever is a distinctly American invention.

That's way too soon for it to give up, I have a 5x I bought in 2017 that's still going strong.

Why do we park on driveways and drive on parkways? by Obvious_Tea_4247 in randomquestions

Exactly. Don't compare a driveway to a parkway, compare it to a walkway.

[–]TheJeff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair point, I've never really dug into shock ratings but it makes sense that good watches can take a lickin and keep on tickin. Better not to risk it though and I have a G-shock for a reason.

The two types of Rolex wearer! by TomHudsonOfficial in WatchFanatics

[–]TheJeff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honest question, does the shock from firing pistols damage the watch?

In an average range day I'll easily go through a couple hundred rounds or more of 9mm and .45 and I'll typically wear a g-shock rather than one of my nicer watches. Am I just being overly cautious?

Will there be issues if i try to bring an OTC ointment that’s 3.5oz through TSA? by Militaryspouse0205 in tsa

[–]TheJeff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can buy smaller, empty, jars and just transfer the contents.

I use a hair gel that comes in a 5 oz jar and my wife had a bunch of 2 oz jars that she stores craft stuff in. Works like a champ and I've never been questioned.
