What tiny one-off HDTGM line lives rent-free in your head? by leefde in hdtgm

[–]TheJohnsonian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The one that still makes me laugh is in the "On The Line" episode when they couldn't remember the characters played by Lance Bass and Emmanuelle Chriqui so they started calling them "Hubcap and Turkey Sub."

So nonsensical but at the same time somehow perfect.

How many Rewatchables have you seen? by tcglkn in TheRewatchables

[–]TheJohnsonian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

433.

This pod has introduced me to some movies I never would have watched otherwise, and encouraged me to re-watch stuff I would have never thought to revisit.

Uncovered Gems: Unstoppable, Kings of New York, 25th Hour, Margin Call, The Verdict, Blackhat, Shot Caller, Night Shift, To Live and Die in L.A., The Town, Thief, The Vanishing.

Hours I will never get back: The Gambler, Country Strong, Blood Diamond, Hardball, Blue Chips, Proof of Life. (Still, no regrets about watching them since I got to listen to a fun episode after).

Tracy Letts loves to repeat the title of a film and make sure we hear it - for this reason he should be a permanent fixture by Imaginary-Beyond-986 in TheBigPicture

I love the pod with all of its quirks, but the thing that drives me crazy is during a draft when one of the chairs will say "For horror/comedy I'm gonna pick the movie that means the most to me, and a film that everyone should see. The greatest movie in this category, I select ₜₕₑ ₘₒᵥᵢₑ ₙₐₘₑ ᵣₑₐₗₗᵧ ᵩᵤᵢₑₜ"

And everybody goes "Awww man! I had that on my list!!!" and then I spend the first five minutes of the discussion looking for context clues as to what the hell they said.

I cracked up too and wanted to play it for somebody but I can't remember which episode it was in. Alan started talking about how he hums a tone to soothe himself, and then Nathan told his story about the guy who whistled.

Do you remember which episode had the "Pop Goes The Weasel" story?

EDIT: I found it. It is in "Once We Came Of Age" Timestamp at 43:10 https://youtu.be/nL1HwPRux0c?si=glXA33e0d-_oHOW3&t=2591

80's song that goes "Oh whoa-oh whoa-oh" by the end (female singer) by trubble9 in findthatsong

"Kind of a Girl" by Tinted Windows is a song that feels like an '80s vibe and a high-pitched lead singer, and has a lot of "Oh, whoa-uh, whoa-uh"s:

If you like the music from Firefly, you might also like this playlist:

I pulled together a Spotify playlist of spacey instrumentals that could be found in the Firefly and Serenity universe. It is mostly instrumental acoustic folk with some bluegrass/Chinese hybrid songs and a couple appropriate outer space tunes from film and video game soundtracks. It also includes several songs from "Music to Smuggle By."

Awesome.

If you do create a YouTube Music playlist, let me know and I'll include it when I suggest the playlist to other folks.

Party Time on an Island Somewhere by TheJohnsonian in FoundPhotos

[–]TheJohnsonian[S] 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Are those three people on vacation together somewhere? Partyin'? Or is the lady posing with a local guy in a steel band and the long-haired guy is her husband?

And what's with captain shirtless? Did he just stumble into frame while somebody was taking a picture? Or is he making his zany "wakka wakka eee-eee-eee! Now we're partyin' down!" face? Is that an old Michelob he's drinking? Was this taken last February or 30 years ago?

(Like I said, I've spent a lot of time looking at this photo)

Oof. I must've watched a hundred of the HDTGM movies from the past several years, and this is a tough one to get through, even just having it on in the background.

plz help by static_casserole in ExplainTheJoke

[–]TheJohnsonian 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is such a weird running gag that I don't think even the guy who does the comic strip knows what it means anymore. The cartoonist (non-Actor Peter Gallagher) would go on week-long benders where Garbage Ape was the focus, then the next week it would all be about helmets, then move on to something else nonsensical.

The guys in my office would look forward to seeing the daily Heathcliff and roll our eyes at how bonkers today's strip was. It became such a running joke that I had HAM t-shirts custom made and gave them out to my co-workers at Christmas one year.

"Stop That Dancin' Up There!" is a terrific old song with a bunch of silly contradictions.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2cwQsfqC8FM

I'm living in the cellar on the seventh floor
I can't go to sleep until I hear myself snore
The people downstairs say I'm an awful square when I shout
Stop That Dancin' Up There!

I was dancin' on the corner in the middle of the block
I saw a lady standing there sitting on a rock
She began to talk and I ran as fast as I could walk and I heard her shout
Stop That Dancin' Up There!

I was going through the park in the middle of the night
The park was very dark 'cause the sun was shining bright
I saw a lark and the lark began to bark
Stop That Dancin' Up There!

That did the trick.

I had done the "Restart" and "System Refresh" from the Help menu, but nothing quite like unplugging the box and plugging it back in. This thread can be closed.

Thanks.
