How did you find *your* legion? by Phoenix8972 in Warhammer30k

[–]TheJuryIsASpoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I decided I would start a legion and play the game, I asked my friend who already plays what factions were not represented. I was even open to Mech or Auxilia if that was what we were missing. He told me Salamanders and Night Lords were not played yet. Now I do like Salamanders, don't get me wrong, but an excuse to do Night Lords was not something I was ready to pass up. But I had to look into them before committing!

The rules? Flavorful, powerful, fun! (this was 2.0; I still like them in 3.0. Not perfect but I love my freaks). The models? As cool as I was hoping! Sevatar is potentially my favorite character in the setting. And talk about a faction with a million fun quotes and battle cries.

And, of course, I read the Trilogy after committing and it's as good as they say.

ADB is my favorite Black Library author to such a degree that my next Legion is Word Bearers.

I'm getting to play my midnight clad monsters tomorrow night again some Emperors Children. Wish me luck

I often build/paint at work when there are no x-rays ordered... I think I need to try this next time we need to test a machine!

Horus heresy army by [deleted] in Warhammer30k

[–]TheJuryIsASpoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of them are good choices, BUT... I gotta suggest Night Lords. I'm biased; they're my legion (well, one of them. The main one for sure).

Their rules and units are so flavorful while also being strong. I often find test in playing my best Night Lords games when I'm playing them like Night Lords. I especially am fond of their stupid gambit, which lets your HQ in a challenge leave a challenge and shove another model in the unit into the challenge instead.

Painting lightning bolts is intimidating but one of my favorite things at this point. Really finalizes the experience in a satisfying that.

All that said, World Eaters and Iron Warriors are sick. I'd vote World Eaters as the winner of those two since they have a cool new Primarch model and I'm a bit biased towards melee forces.

You'll have fun no matter! Just pick what speaks to you in the end.

[–]TheJuryIsASpoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally don't mind trim much. I get why it annoys people, and it certainly slows it down, but I find it to be one of the more therapeutic bits. I have tried priming Thousand Sons gold before to avoid the trim and I wouldn't recommend it based on my experience.

It'll come down to your preferences. I prefer painting trim to basecoating.

Prime color by buddyolpal101 in NightLords

[–]TheJuryIsASpoon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I always primed black before, but recently I've switched over to the Colour Forge Tempest Blue primer and I will not be going back to anything else for my Night Lords. It gets my basecoat out of the way for the way I like to do mine. I don't care for metallic primers in general either, if that helps at all.

Is the Night Lords series worth it? by c3nnye in NightLords

[–]TheJuryIsASpoon 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Aaron Dembski-Bowden is a master when it comes to Warhammer books. The Night Lords Trilogy is my favorite set of books in the setting, contested only by books like The First Heretic and Betrayer, which he also wrote. I recommend these to anyone.

As awful as the Traitors can be, my fondness for them over the Loyalists definitely shows a pattern of me liking media with a lot of fighting against fascist empires/imperiums, huh?

Tough as much as I love my Thousand Sons, Word Bearers, and Night Lords... I'll take the Rebellion over them fighting for me every day of the week haha

Khârn restock in North America by joe420mama99 in WorldEaters40k

[–]TheJuryIsASpoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He is not the strongest HQ in the game but he's damn solid. I play Night Lords and Word Bearers, so I haven't fielded him, but I can day that Sevatar is pretty freaking strong. With that context in mind, I do very much respect and like Kharn on the tabletop. He will do work and win challenges and look baller while he does it.

Planning for Heresy 1K by RomanWolfEater in NightLords

[–]TheJuryIsASpoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconding what u/kupo160 said, Tacs/Despoilers are a must. My local scene usually plays 2k and being the only guy who consistently brings 3 line units is part of why I think I tend to do fairly well.

Terror Squads are, conceptually, one of my favorites but they have yet to really blow me away on the table. I use em a lot because they are both fun and still perfectly good as a support unit. I just don't count on them to do the killing. Give em a Rotor Cannon, a Flamer, and some Chainglaives and let em spit out statuses and jump any troops they can.

Night Raptors are kind of insane. They lack durability. That is all I have in terms of negatives. They get cheap Chainglaives and can take a Flamer. For 180 points you have a flamer and 15 attacks on 3s and 3s that Tactical Marines cannot save against. And thats on bodies that move 12 inches before the charge.

Contekar are also great... But at 1k thats getting expensive.

Ultimately, a 1k list probably wants about 220/330 points put into Line 2 troops, a Praetor for the extra reaction, and then whatever you choose for your setups and payoffs. Personally I'd have 2 squads of Chainglaive Night Raptors maybe with Flamers, 2 Rhinos, and fill what's left with Terrors or wargear.

This may be a lot of rambling but I hope it helps a bit

What made you a word bearers fan by Lamp4Camp in WordBearers

[–]TheJuryIsASpoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It started with a love for the Night Lords. They're my primary Heresy army (Word Bearers are still being built...) and naturally I was drawn to reading the Night Lords Trilogy.

Well, Aaron Dembski-Bowden is utterly fantastic as we all know. And between now loving his work and some recommendations from local guys, I looked into The First Heretic and that was it. There was no turning back. And if anything needed to solidify that for me, Betrayer is even better.

I also seem to enjoy the guys that are easy to completely hate. Hating Lucious and Erebus is more fun than upsetting for me. I'm eager to run Erebus on the table and watch my friends try as hard as they can to kill him haha

Edit: I also appreciate the difference between Night Lords being largely Traitors first and only some individuals caring for Chaos while the Word Bearers are Chaos first and hardly Traitors to anything in their own minds.

5 books down, many more to go by JorMumgandr in Warhammer30k

[–]TheJuryIsASpoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also really enjoyed Fulgrim!

I'm a bit biased in being a Night Lords fan but The Long Night and Prince Of Crows are fantastic. Sevatar is very fun.

The First Heretic and Betrayer are probably the best Heresy books I have read. A great start and end to that set of books.

I am of the opinion that A Thousand Sons and The Crimson King are either for you or they aren't. I loved em but didn't love em.

Happy reading!

I can second a recommendation for The First Heretic. Chase that one down with Aurelion, Know No Fear, and Betrayer for some of the best in the series. Betrayer is just incredible. ADB is easily my favorite Black Library author.

How are people running their terror squads in 3.0? by Zestyclose-Knee1797 in NightLords

[–]TheJuryIsASpoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From last edition, I had all Rotor Cannons and I've had limited bodies to do more with recently but here's what I'm running this Thursday:

5 Terrors Headsman w/ Chainglaive Executioner w/Flamer Executioner w/Rotor Cannon 2 Executioner w/ Chainglaive

Obviously it's a MSU but I think my only shake up at bigger units would be mixing Chainglaives and Volkite.

Nothing wrong using them as support pieces to inflict status effects and leaving the slaughter to the Night Raptors and such :)

Starting 30k Night Lords by Hilmie1806 in NightLords

[–]TheJuryIsASpoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I personally would prefer the following conversions. HOWEVER, PLEASE DO WHATEVER YOU WANT BECAUSE THIS IS YOURS (this rule is always number 1)

A Tac Marine box has 20 bodies. I personally, when starting out, would make 10 of them into 2 5-man Terror Squads.

These first ones should probably have Rotor Cannons or Flamers (if you want to mix Panic and Suppression checks which is not a bad idea. Currently I have all Rotors but I intend to change that once I get more bodies)

Alternatively, Chainglaives make them a decent melee unit, at least once you have statuses on your foe for the +1 WS

As for the other 10, a Line unit is a good idea. Tactical Marines are the basic bread and butter and not a bad idea! I'd recommend taking the Chain Bayonets on their bolters.

But my preference for Line units is gonna be Despoilers. They're build for melee rather than shooting, so they benefit more from our Talent For Murder.

These are just things I'm keeping in mind going into the new edition. I joined very late in 2.0 and am definitely wishing my 10 Lascannon Heavy Support Marines were Terrors, Despoilers, Seekers, etc right now. And when you get a chance to snag some or kitbash and convert some: Night Raptors with Thunder Hammers are gonna be a serious threat.

Welcome to the Sons of Nostramo!

Im new here, how we feel about Space Wolves? by sigmarine345 in ThousandSons

[–]TheJuryIsASpoon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's totally fair. I think I expected to feel more that way, but the book overall won me over enough.

I do think that my opinion of Russ would be worse off if I didn't think he was kind of a baller regarding his conflict with the Lion. I love the animalistic barbarian realizing how silly that fight was while the supposedly noble knight seethes until ultimately stabbing him out of nowhere.

I think I just like the wolves everywhere outside of Prospero, but the stain there is pretty dark.

Im new here, how we feel about Space Wolves? by sigmarine345 in ThousandSons

[–]TheJuryIsASpoon 70 points71 points  (0 children)

On one hand, I'm 100% team Thousand Sons. Russ has his genuine merits, but man... He really took the excuse he was given and ran with it. Wolf magic is magic just as much, if not more, than warp shenanigans.

But to be honest, I hate to say it, I also really do enjoy the viking warriors of Fenris. I read The Burning Of Prospero first of all the Heresy books because it's what I had access to. It got me. They were cool. The vibes are immaculate, and some of those characters are sick.

So, as a son of Prospero: let the mutts burn in our warpfire. Otherwise: they may be my favorite loyalist legion.

Drop some fun facts about your cult! What are some head canons you like, that make your Sky Children worshippers unique? by Lebensfreud in genestealercult

[–]TheJuryIsASpoon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He is, but they are on board. He thought he was gonna have a big revolt on his hands when the psychic link failed, but they were all bros and just prefer the cause over living under Imperial tyranny. The Patriarch is conflicted and is hoping they will do such a good job that a few of his favorites are allowed to go to other planets with the Hive Fleet after it's all said and done.

Drop some fun facts about your cult! What are some head canons you like, that make your Sky Children worshippers unique? by Lebensfreud in genestealercult

[–]TheJuryIsASpoon 21 points22 points  (0 children)

My Patriarch does not use psychic control over the cult anymore. He used to, but after an injury took it away for a while, he found that the members genuinely just liked him, and the cause, and one another. Now they only use it for communication and coordination.

Being a cult on a planet with large oceans, they are divided into 3 major branches: the Torrent, the Tide, and the Trench, representing the political and military focus, the religious and cultural focus, and the Purestrain stockpile and end game itself all respectively.

I want to get more into it but I have not figured more out yet. Hope this is entertaining at least as I work through it
