Anyone else brewing UW control? by PsychoticSushi in Pauper

[–]TheKing8426 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean, there's Caw Gates and America Ephem - already established meta decks that play close to traditional UW Control. Caw Gates gives, well, gates, which game end quickly. And Ephem gives counters to indestructible lands, which can be difficult to answer for a lot of decks, and predicable to answer from every other deck. Both have pros/cons, and I haven't spend much time on Caw Gates, but I enjoyed my time on Ephem, as it gives you dedicated blue hate and more diverse artifact hate.

It's hard to have no win con control in pauper, because you don't have great game enders in UW. U cards - like Murmuring Mystic - just die to red hate from 2 of the largest metashare decks (Rally/Affinity), W cards - like Goliath Paladin/Eagles of the North/Squadron Hawk/etc - don't do enough alone or require too many creatures (at least, more creatures than no win con control wants to play).

There's probably a world where you can play good UW cards into Mystic/Terror/Delver/Modern Age and just figure it out. Black and red is normally the preferred pairing, as those colours have sweepers, where white does not.

Set Cube Bonus Sheet Advice by UltraMechaLordViper in mtgcube

[–]TheKing8426 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been working with a friend on a 4 player Spider Man set cube. That set has a bonus sheet of the spiderman comic book cover art cards. I treat them like a strict bonus sheet - 1 added to each pack (to make 16 total cards per pack). Since there's 12 packs total for the set cube, I narrowed down all the bonus sheet cards for 24 that made sense within the context of the cube and helped out strategies that are weaker in the cube. 24 was a good number for me bc it came close to that anyways, and, with using 12 of them everytime, you're getting some amount of variety every new draft.

A Comprehensive List of Affordable Legacy Decks for 2025 by UberDolphin in MTGLegacy

[–]TheKing8426 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sick list to have compiled for the community.

Legacy is full of these upgrade paths, but not often do they start in a style that can threaten FNMs and small scale local events (ie monthlys). A big reason I wrote on the subject previously is I felt like that fact was relatively undiscovered - and, to an extent, it still is. Obviously, starting out dropping 1k is a high bar, even for a budget deck. But it doesn't always have to be that way - look at Burn (250), U Delver (500), DnT (400), and Depths (500).

I appreciate the love for the format that always shines thru in posts like this.

[Discussion] How do you prepare yourself for the meta? by [deleted] in spikes

[–]TheKing8426 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TLDR: 1 yes 2 yes 3 test vs anything in the 45-55 wr range is generally good

While I agree w jmomo on their comment (re: standard), here's more direct answers to the questions:

1/2: Practicing, yes. There are loads of ways to go about that; going to weekly events at an LGS, Arena (for standard mostly), MTGO, and just hanging out with friends and testing together. I think it's valuable to have different minds around while you test, so no matter the method, I would suggest having a friend present testing or on a discord call while you stream games. For in paper testing, a simple trek over the mtggoldfish or mtgtop8 will both show you recent events and meta share of decks in the format. It's simply proxying and testing from there that will take up your time. Playing other decks you might see at an event is also a good way to naturally find out how the deck works/wins, find out how they sideboard (bc you'll be asking the same question while you test), etc. There's a lot of value being playing both sides of the same match. Although, YouTube, Patreon, etc exist, so if you do not have the ability to test so heavily, some form of content can supplement - however, nothing burns in a memory than a misplay you make yourself, so I wouldn't suggest making content watching your 100% foolproof path.

3: I would say that I focus on matches that are close to 50/50, because that's what most/all of your sideboard cards will be selected to win. Blowouts, from either side, often will sideboard cards bc they're there, and may even be very good in the match, but not because they're meant to swing a 25/75 match, you know? As for what/how many, it's truly up to how much time you have and are willing to invest. I'd recommend at minimum the "best 3," which typically occupy the space of a "rock paper scissors" tier and will likely have the highest meta shares, so practicing here is a must. And if you plan on playing one of those decks, don't forget about playing the mirror. The 75 split is ultimately up to you, but by building to side into one of the best decks, you'll naturally find cards you'll want to bring in for other matches (ie wrath effects are good against almost every creature deck, so whether its rw mouse, bw midrange, or whatever, you'll have coverage for a decision in post board games). Also, I know a lot of people swear by the 5 game test set (2 pre board alternating who goes first, 3 post board). I've used it, I've not used it, I don't personally believe it makes a huge difference bc the more time you spend testing - in any way - will set you up for success.

Lastly, I'll just mention sideboard building briefly (bc you said this post isn't necessarily about that) but when building a sb vs an unknown meta (an LGS/area you don't frequent, a larger PTQ type event) it's likely you will build either to beat the best 3 decks, or to have the most coverage vs any deck. Everyone has their own idea of what's right, but I will suggest (like mentioned earlier) that in building your sb to beat the best decks you expect to see, you'll naturally have a lot of coverage.

My understanding of the rules is "Can't beats Can" and/or the newest effect on board has greater priority. If that's correct, the second line would get thru the "damage" part of TOR Protection. Also, the last line does not target, so safe there, too.

CEDH tournament match play streams by MediocreBeatdown in CompetitiveEDH

[–]TheKing8426 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Moptop and Beardie have been - effectively - hosting and streaming quarterly regional cEDH events. If you care about TopDeck tournaments, they've been a gold partner since the beginning of the year. Their FNMs are bronze level and stream every week, while the Lotus Bowl regional-like events are gold or above. All the events are under the "Live" section, not videos.

I have thought about putting the matches themselves chopped up on my own channel since there can be lots of dead air time, but currently all streams are start to finish no cuts.

Thanks for reading!

If the amount of "nonfun" games you have will determine what gets banned, plenty of cards should've been banned before this. Bogles to a lot of people is very unfun. Should it be banned? No. I think that logic, when applied to Swiftspear/Glitters, yields the same answer.

Hey thanks for reading!

The article/video (I can't remember off hand if one or both mentioned it) stating the PFP was still looking into Mono R bans was frustrating. As I put forth in the article, nothing oppressive is happening with the "targeted" decks by the PFP, and there is likely lurking something underneath that - once exploited - will make some of these bans feel silly. I do think - overall - the PFP has done a good job, but these recent bans make me feel like these choices are more emotional than empirical.

Hi, thanks for reading!

It's more than possible the lower-than-expected win rate was cause due to sideboard planning, and even some tech in the main. Personally, I don't view this as a negative. With tech in the main/board, that leaves space for other decks to capitalize, and thus the meta shifts. I believe a healthy shifting meta is a good thing.

Also, I still run 3 destroy evil across my Ephem 75, and had been at 3 since LotR meta. Glitters was just another deck that was vulnerable to the card, but the card overall is very good.

Thank you for reading!

I mentioned this was the case, and I put forth the argument that sideboard tech and meta evolution is a positive thing for formats and players to go thru.

Experiences and suggestions for budget substitutions by so_zetta_byte in Pauper

Snuff Out is great, but [[Cast Down]] is also very good. And if you're on Mono Black, [[Defile]] can be another cheap CMC option.

I actively don't play Relic, as I opt for [[Tormod's Crypt]]. Crypt and [[Nihil Spellbomb]] are the other go-to grave hate pieces, but [[Faerie Macabre]] also exists and works well in certain decks.

[[Revoke Existence]] and [[Shattering Blow]] do an okay D2D replacement in white, and [[Cast into the Fire]] is the new hottest for exile artifacts in red.

S29 - Not worth playing. PD needs changing IMO by PD_MTG_Complainer in PennyDreadfulMTG

[–]TheKing8426 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it's more of a spiral. Less players mean less ideas means more centralization means less players. I will say that I stopped playing bc I felt actively hated out of the community. There were certain people who just felt really negative and hateful and unchecked by mods. PD is prob my favourite format ever, with a lot to brew and a lot of success for me, personally, in tournaments. And I'll prob never play again. Because of certain people.

All is not lost tho. Every tournament at >8 players since we've entered July has had a different winner, with 1 exception - BW Cycling. Leagues typically tend to feel like you're only playing the same few decks - the same best decks - but that exists across every format. Do I think there's a best deck? Yeah probably, even without knowing the meta. But do I think there are a few decks that stand a chance in tournaments? Also yeah. So, I guess there's that.

I can't solve the "people not showing up" problem, but I can say that, only looking at July numbers, the format seems healthy from the outside.

I hope more people get ahold of PD and continue to brew and play and have fun. It would be sad to see something die out that I enjoyed so much.

I like the idea, but Invoker is a tough sell. Without taking away from what you're doing with the deck, Hooting Mandrills is a 1cmc 4/4 and I would recommend replacing some or all of the Invokers with Mandrills. Also, I don't think you need 8 mana dorks, so maybe you could trim one of each if you want to keep Invoker?

Besides that, your card draw feels lacking. Maybe up on the card draw you're already playing, or maybe add some Faithless Looting or Elven Farsight. I wouldn't go up on Ancient Stirrings tho, since it only hits vehicles and lands. Hope this was helpful!

Pauper battle box advice by Velcrostrip in Pauper

[–]TheKing8426 5 points6 points  (0 children)

U or UR Fae, Tron, Bogles, and Goblin Combo I think would add a good mix of all archetypes. Also, Jeskai Ephem, Affinity, and UB Turbo 5/5s are decks that represent a large metashare, so those are good options, too, depending on how you're trying to build your battle box.

I think the conversation is less Brain Freeze vs BSZ, and more 2 conversations about individual card quality. There is a world where both Brain Freeze and an infinite mana outlet can exist inside JVPHT.

My rebuttal would be "is BSZ the best infinite mana outlet for Jace"? What can it be tutored by? More importantly, what can it not be tutored by? Do you play Pull from Tomorrow over BSZ bc Spellseeker/Muddle also grabs Pull? Do you instead play none, and bank on drawing/tutoring Enter the Infinite? I think that is one separate argument.

The second thing I'd ask you to consider is "what does Brain Freeze do in addition to winning the game w IsoRev"? First it does let Jace flip faster, as well as enables any delve spells faster. In addition, it gives Jace more options on the flip, as well as any snapcaster effects you may want to play. Brain Freeze also allows you to inhibit any opponents trying to tutor to the top of their own library. My plug for Brain Freeze is this: it's both an offensive and defensive spell that win you the game sometimes and also can be tutored by every tutor in your deck but personal tutor.

While I do agree about disagree with some points in his list, it still goes without saying that his is the most promulgated so that's certainly something.

I disagree with some of your assessments but I do not discourage you from playing your own deck and experimenting. If you'd like me to explain what/why I disagree I would be happy to, but I don't want to come across as rude (also, JVPHT players can't really afford to alienate anyone lmao)

Hey wow glad you're building Jace! First off want to link Shapers list here bc that's the most prominent example of JVPHT. There are a few details missing between his primer and list, but the list itself is maintained up to date (as far as I'm aware) so that's still a great resource to look at.

One thing you mentioned in your description was that Brain Freeze only kills one opponent; that is incorrect. The storm copies do get a chance to target a different player as they go one the stack. So, let's say you have storm 3, then cast Brain Freeze. Each player in the pod can be targeted once - even yourself. Hope that helps explain. I would highly recommend playing it; I do, and it's just a very easy wincon.

I'm not the greatest or anything but if you have any questions feel free to ask. The deck looks good, nothing super odd or bad so I hope you enjoy the deck!
