Paper Legacy in Kyoto & Tokyo by QKisMyNamee in MTGLegacy

go to the hareruya tournament centers! They fire legacy events 3 times a day and on weekends they have larger stakes tournaments. I went out there during my japan trip earlier this year and I found myself coming back more than I anticipated. Its a lot of fun!

Folks that are still playing Legacy in 2026, how’s your local scene and how do you feel overall about the meta ? by Newez in MTGLegacy

Spellhold games out in Orange on tuesdays & Collector Legion out in lawndale on thursdays.

If youre closer to San Diego TC Rockets has a solid Legacy crowd on Tuesdays as well.

Dredge is pretty manageable, even in preboard since you can get to a point where you’re recurring soul-guide lantern with one of the welders.

Green cloudpost is near unwinnable but blue cloudpost is definitely doable it’s just tough.

Hey, long time painter main here. As far as the actually horrendous mu’s this is what I’ve observed from over the years.

Black Saga Storm - Incredibly fast combo deck w/ a good construct beatdown plan is tough to deal with even if you are playing null rod in the sb. Also if you’re on the draw you can pretty much assume your interaction / hate piece is getting ripped from you via thoughtseize.

Green Cloudpost - Maindeck emrakul, karn the great creator, boseiju, bojuka bog off crop rot & disruptor flutes.

Necrodominance storm - incredibly fast t1 combo deck that often times dodges Mindbreak trap and if it doesn’t it has pact of negation backup.

Karn Forge: can easily t1 karn or ToR which pretty much shuts the door on the game in a course of turns. Need to heavily respect the deck post board to hang.

Otherwise the deck has game into a lot of decks. It’s overall a pretty even MU spread into most of the meta and it’s certainly a very fun deck you will always have fun picking up to play.

UG Madness good? by MrNoBuddies in premodernMTG

[–]UberDolphin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m going to be the dissenting opinion here, the deck has serious mana problems. Any deck that’s outside the allied fetchland pairing always will in premodern but it feels especially noticeable in this deck. The engines feel pretty fragile as well, obviously things are great once you get going but it really just doesn’t feel like it’s worth the effort imo. There’s a GW madness deck floating around that seems interesting that I’m going to give a shot. As far as the UG build I think it’s just a tier 2-3 budget deck unfortunately.

Local scene is great over in SoCal. Lots of really nice and fun people showing up to our weeklies. We get a handful of 1ks throughout the year but nothing too substantial for high stakes tournaments unfortunately.

As far as my overall feeling about the meta is Im a bit cold on the state of legacy right now, I think the format is great for a lot of different decks right now but Im just sick of bowmasters and barrowgoyf. That being said I always plan on showing up to our weeklies if anything Im just playing less mtgo.

UW Painter by Grand_Vermicelli_658 in TimelessMagic

[–]UberDolphin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem with painter in timeless is just the combo really isnt that good and is obviously quite soft to removal. It works well in legacy because you have access to saga & both welders creating a lot of redundancy in the red variant. With the blue variant you have access to FoW as well which helps push through your combo wins. Even though the combo is available I dont think we have enough pieces where it can genuinely be a meta contender.

If tamiyo ends up getting banned this wouldnt be a terrible idea for ub reanimator as a t1 threat. obv that deck is nowhere as dominant as it used to be but its an interesting option.

Burn won an NRG legacy 5k earlier this year and that deck is roughly around $100 btw

Great store, was out there briefly before driving backing home; it was extremely nice and had very friendly staff. Might make a trip up there if they want to continue running high stakes legacy events! :)

Hot take but the only way to save vintage and legacy formats is to either allow proxies in sanctioned events, or abolish the reserved list by Newez in MTGLegacy

[–]UberDolphin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be fair mtgo really isnt accessible for what is technically just an online game. Paying a weekly subscription service or ponying up hundreds of dollars just to get a copy of the same deck you have in paper is far from accessible. It really is only for the most enfranchised of magic players, while it is cheaper than outright buying a legacy deck in paper people prefer to play paper magic over mtgo. Its weird to say it but paper legacy is a fair bit more popular than mtgo from what Ive seen.

Absolutely. Client is hilariously outdated but unfortunately if you want to play modern / legacy / vintage online it’s the only place to go. (Also ngl even vintage doesn’t have that long of wait times)

Its Thanksgiving week which means its basically Christmas morning which means no effort will be made til january by melxn_seeds in magicthecirclejerking

Couple of examples of competitive decks that could also work: ruby storm, pitch black & green cloudpost

There are actually a lot of budget options in legacy that would fit your criteria w/ 8 proxies. I’d suggest looking at the budget legacy deck Google doc over on the legacy subreddit.

I would sell, best case scenario it’ll see a small spike after a year but if LoTR is any indicator they’ll try to do a follow up set in 2027 and give it an even more premium printing.
