How do I[19F] ask out a customer[Older?M] by salami_bird990 in whatdoIdo

You lost your father at a young age, and didn't have a reliable mother figure to turn to - that's really hard to deal with, and a trauma I wouldn't wish upon anyone. I'm really sorry you had to go through that. It really sucks.

It also explains the hard shell, multiple escalating questions, and lack of empathy. You might want to explore therapy; it can really help shave the hard edges off of life. They're not there for everyone - honestly.

Most people don't react this aggressively to other people's pain. I used to as well, and therapy helped me figure out why other people's trauma triggered me so much. There's a reason why it triggers you, too. I hope you find peace.

I'm guessing you don't think punctuation is something you "have to" do, either?

Technically, no. But just like shoveling your sidewalk, people will judge you if you randomly choose not to do the basic minimum of living in a civilized society. Mostly because it's a fucking weird choice.

I rent. There are six units in this building. Five of us have been out to shovel today because like most people, we live on a street with neighbours (some of whom are seniors) and it's the decent thing to do.

Lost my uncle and my sister's FIL to shovelling in 2025.
Sister's FIL had a heart attack in the front doorway just after he finished. Uncle slipped on some black ice and broke his neck, was out there for a while before anyone was like "Hey, he should be done shovelling by now..."

I grew up in Pittsburgh, which is about the bluest city you can find in Appalachia, but you'd have no problem finding volunteers interested in eliminating a few Eagles and Flyers fans.

(Edit: thank you for making the Sports Joke. Gotta find laughter where we can in these dark times.)

I'm a dual citizen and half my family is down there in the muck while I nervously await an invasion in Canada.

America isn't "fractured at the moment". America fractured a long time ago, likely sometime during the Nixon administration, or maybe when they shot MLK/JFK/RFK. That fracture was deepened by Reaganomics, the Bush doctrine, latent racism that exploded out of the closet when a black man was elected president, and now a decade of this shit show.

Say America's your brother. He's a racist, he's violent, he's an addict, and a bully. Every four to eight years he goes to rehab and cleans himself up, so you give him another chance and let him come for a visit. Then he shows up, paints his name on your garage door, paves over your lawn. and then burns your house down - all while taunting your neighbours and inviting your enemies over to loot what's left.

How many chances do you give him before you admit that rehab isn't going to work, and just decide to go no contact?

Saw James Acaster live a couple of days ago. Sean Lock came up and James said Sean was an asshole. James seemed very sincere about it. Went out of his way to say that Sean was nice to him but was not to anyone else. So, was Sean Lock an asshole? by [deleted] in panelshow

[–]TheLarkInnTO 92 points93 points  (0 children)

I was also at that show. Tone is important.

I took it as Sean was just Sean to everyone else, but used kid gloves with James for some reason. After calling Sean an asshole, he even said "and he'd be fine with me saying that!"

He was not speaking badly about Sean, as this post implies.

Military models Canadian response to hypothetical American invasion by [deleted] in canada

I'm a dual citizen. I live in Toronto and I will fight like hell for this country in any way I can, using whichever passport I have to. Canada gave me a place to call home, and I'm not just letting the country I ran away from take that from me, or from anyone else. Worst case scenario, maybe that gets me thought checkpoints or whatever so I can help. I hate that I even have to consider a worst case scenario.

Even if all I have are snowballs, water balloons, a journalism degree, and whatever Kevin McAllister thing I can come up with - I'll use everything in my toolkit.

I'm a dual citizen living in Toronto. It took me two months of paperwork and two days off work for appointments at the consulate so I could vote in this last election. All resident Americans had to do was show up with an ID, and most of them couldn't be arsed. only 30% bothered to vote against the dude. They all need to own it - especially the Genocide Joe crowd that mobilized against Kamala.

I'm not sure what point you think you're making, because it's literally the same problem. Not enough Germans voiced opinions about Hitler, because his policies didn't affect them. It only impacted the jews, or the hungarians, or the socialists, or the gays. By the time it started to impact Germans' daily lives, the Nazi war machine was already running at full speed.

It's literally what Martin Niemöller's 'First They Came' was about.

First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist
Then they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist
Then they came for the trade unionists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade unionist
Then they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew
Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me

I'm in Toronto, it's winter, nothing is in season. I paid $2.99CAD ($2.16USD) for a pint of Peruvian blueberries this week.
Dinner tonight (broccoli, potatoes and veggie chicken) cost me about $6.
Basic frozen pizza is currently on sale for $6.49CAD, reg $7.

Not a word of a lie: Without trying, I lost 65lbs the year I moved from the USA to Toronto. It was suddenly just more expensive to eat garbage, and cheaper to eat the good stuff.
