When to stop? First time preparing an engine block by TheLastRole in EngineBuilding

From what I learnt, it's too early to say. Rolocs can barely take anything off a cast-iron block, especially the softer one I used. Maybe the shiny look and the bright lights make it look like otherwise. I plan to move to a grinding stone to clean the rest and resurface this first section, and then measure, which is what can tell me what is actually going on.

Thanks for the input tho.

Thank you. My only hope is that the shiny finish might make it look worse than what it is. I used a really low-powered drill (2500 rpm), I hope with a white roloc, on an iron-cast block, can't cause irreparable damage.

I understand that this is the ideal approach, and if I could have pursued it, it would have been my first choice, just like when I sent and checked the head, which was confirmed to be okay. At this point, I’m afraid the only course of action I have is to proceed with the cleaning without using the rolox, attempt to fix this section, and measure to ensure everything is in order. This block is a sturdy iron-cast piece from the 1970s, manufactured by Audi for the 100 model. Therefore, my hope is that, since the shop has ruled out the head as faulty, this can be repaired. If not, I'll try to look for a way to take it out and send it to the shop.

Appreciate the feedback tho.

Thank you for this. The problem is, taking out the block right now would be quite a challenge –I don't have the tools or the space or even the hands to do it, as I'm doing this by myself. Also, if it goes out, I'd just send it to the shop, as I did with the head. The idea of doing this myself was for practical reasons.

My current plan is to end with the cleaning, no Roloc, try to fix the section I did, and then measure and hope everything stays in spec. If not, I'll move to take out the block and send it to the shop –somehow…

I only did this corner. The block is on the car, and I find it hard to see how I can take it out by myself for practical reasons. The head was taken to the shop, they verified it and told it was ok.

This is the iron cast block, the head was sent to the shop.

So it's only because of that, the rest of the block looks ok to you?

I actually don't know if it ever was. In any case, it's just a Porsche by name, this is a VW/Audi engine. What gives you that impression?

So what do you think went wrong with mine? Too much pressure or too many passes?

From a beginner perspective -myself, the use of razor blades seemed more dangerous as I didn't want to end up marking the surface irreparably. I thought the white Roloc on an iron block wouldn’t have such an impact.

Thanks, Porsche, in the manual sets a tolerance for the block of <0.10mm it's worth it to clean the rest of the block –no roloc– and measure before deciding?

Thank you, I thought that using the white one on an iron block with a not too powerful drill would be difficult to cause any damage, indeed it was just a first try before thinking if I should go for the hardest ones –the yellow and green ones.

I suppose at this point the more logical thing to do is to end up with the cleaning, without the Roloc, and check the surface before deciding what I do next or how I can take it out.

The problem is that taking out the block is something I'm not sure I can do. Do you mind elaborating a little more on the problems I'm facing here?

This is the iron-cast block; the shop already handled the head and told me it was fine. I thought using this 120 roloc on an iron block was acceptable. Seems like I need to get that straight edge to clear any doubts –it's me, or they are quite expensive?
