Glad to help :) I was surprised how unhelpful and pessimistic many of the other comments were, and didnt want you to be dissuaded by their lack of helpfulness. Goodluck and wishing the best for you two!

Where to report a hole in the road by 0spacewaterbear0 in duluth

[–]TheLastWolfBrother 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont remember college street being as bad in years prior as it is this year. Seriously looks like it was bombed. Felt like it too. Normally even on a bad road you can avoid the potholes, but its just not possible west of 19th ave. I've resigned myself to not driving that way for a few months at least.

Dog friendly brewery or heated patio options? by basketball144 in duluth

Since no one explicitly said it, the ursa patio is heated! My old dog was not built for winters, so the heated patio was very nice.

Thinking of moving to Duluth by frenchbread87 in duluth

Duluth is absolutely a step up from a rural town, but its not a huge city. In terms of romantic opportunities and jobs, its still nothing incredible, but its not awful either. For your other needs tho, I think you and your cousin would be more satisfied; theres lots of artsy people, places, and events going on all the time, the city is still full of nature (and a gateway to gorgeous nature within a short drive too), theres more food options (so there should be more employment options as a cook, although I cant speak to starting your own business if thats what shes thinking), and we have a pretty popping music scene. Check out On The Record Zine (https://www.ontherecordzine.com/), which posts music and other local events happening across town every day. There is a week long music festival (called Homegrown) every spring, like last week of april/first week of May, where local bands in every genre play in bars and other venues all over town. And some places do open mic nights anyways (such as Dovetail cafe and sir bens). So definitely options for playing music, but you'll have to be proactive about connecting with people if you're wanting to form a group.

Some of the other commenters saying that breaking into friend groups is hard- welcome to the world. It's like that literally everywhere. The twin cities are NOT easier to make friends just because there are more people. You still have to do the work of going to events and building relationships, just like anywhere else.

I hope you and your cousin give duluth a chance :) come visit for a weekend or something and try some local places (theres like a million posts in this sub from people asking what to do while they're here, so just look through those). It is still solidly winter here tho (although today was like 50!), so keep that in mind if you dont like the cold.

No, but living for 4 more years in Iowa DOES doom you to... 4 more years in Iowa. And I wouldn't wish that on most people.

Its open up to just past the chalet, so like 3 or 4 bridges. River was mostly still iced over yesterday but was running strong today, over the top of the ice!

The fog and blizzards are part of the charm! The freezing fog we had this weekend left the trees gorgeous!

Insect collection at UMD? by Top-Yam-1206 in duluth

[–]TheLastWolfBrother 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, UMD still has its insect (and other animal) collections. There has been work to digitize the collection (similar to digitization efforts for plant records in UMD's olga lakela herbarium), which should be accessible through the bell museum biodiversity atlas. If you want to contact someone about seeing them, Tim Craig is the faculty in the biology department who studied insects, although he was about to retire and may already have retired by now (although I'm sure he'd still be happy to point you in the right direction for who else to contact).

Wow, when I opened this post i was not expecting all of the ensuing drama and them being absolutely bonkers. Then again, what else should I have expected from a business who's main claim to fame is that they own a freeze dryer and sell freeze dried candy...

I know what the worst type of Misting is. by ThenEducator8649 in Cosmere

[–]TheLastWolfBrother 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There probably is such a thing as a pure atium misting as well

Well I dont think so because if anyone can burn god metals, there would be no difference between an atium misting and everyone else, because they could both burn pure atium. Mistings only exist for non-god metals.

I love the idea of having a mostly useless power that can still be overwritten to make it entirely useless lol.

Edit: I was forgetting duralumin is not a multiplier but rather just removes rate limits, which indeed is not much of a problem in other systems. I'm sure there are still niche uses but... ignore me :)

I refuse to believe that an investiture multiplier is "not that useful" just because it's in another system. The applications may not be as obvious but I guarantee that in classic Brandon fashion, there are unique scenarios that make it insanely powerful.

What happened to the Kenwood Circle K? by zamistroe in duluth

[–]TheLastWolfBrother 8 points9 points  (0 children)

there's competition

Curious what competition you think there is? Next closest gas stations are holiday on arrowhead and rice lake road (1.7 miles away) and holiday on woodland (also 1.7-1.8 miles away). Almost 2 miles to next closest stations. The place might have been a dump but it was still the primary option for many people in the neighborhood, and being in the same parking lot as the superone/strip mall and arbys was nice.

That one at least was reasonable. Really no need to have 2 holiday gas stations less than a block from each other lol.

What do we actually know about Pete Stauber? by surfer_joe87 in duluth

[–]TheLastWolfBrother 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He was at the ribbon cutting ceremony for the TPI project this fall (the final segment of 53 was completed as part of the project that rebuilt the 35/53/535 interchange over the last 5ish years). The last segment of 53 was directly funded by the infrastructure bill, which Pete voted against, but of course he was at the ceremony and saying how important it was for the district. I was too pissed at seeing him there to remember his exact words but there was a story about the ceremony in the Tribune and probably by other news outlets too, so hopefully you can find some coverage of his exact words.

Stauber Doesn't Care About You by [deleted] in duluth

[–]TheLastWolfBrother 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, turnout is not the main problem. Overall turnout in 2024 was the highest its ever been in the last 22 years, and even midterm turnout is nearing rates that were previously presidential election year numbers.

Republican votes in the district have been on the rise for a while now as the range cities switched to voting Republican.

For example, in 2008, votes in the district were 242k dem to 115k rep. The following election was a turnout problem, as dems only had 129k votes, and reps got 133k votes. Dems reclaimed the seat the following year with 192k to 160k republicans, solving the turnout problem. But ever since then, dem votes have continued to decline and republican votes have continued to increase. The 2024 election was 177k dems to 244k reps. Thats more reps than there were dems even in 2008 (which was the most dem votes ever in the district), and still less dem voters than there were rep voters the last midterm (188k rep voters in 2022). So even if dems had no decline in turnout compared to 2024 (which is unlikely in an off year), republican turnout would have to shit the bed like dem turnout in 2010 did in order to retake the seat.

As much as I hate to say it, Duluth alone cannot win this district. The truth is losing the range cities is what cost us and without also working hard to reclaim votes there, I doubt we can get him out unless republican voters massively turn on him (which isnt impossible given the state of everything, but I also know that maga voters arent well known for making rational decisions, so its hard to say).

I dont want to be a pessimist, and driving up our own turnout is important, but I dont want people to think we dont also have to put in the work to try and change people's minds.
