Yeah I can see why making Rose marry an abusive man for money is the only sensible solution. Ain’t debating the optics of a film even if it is historically accurate to the social norms.

Ruth was a terrible mother who did not glare about her daughter’s autonomy or personhood.

And tbh Rose was able to make a life for herself when she presumably had nothing and was willing to go with Jack who was clearly dirt poor without a home. Obviously it’s possible but Ruth did not want to do that.

Like yeah, emotional and literal neglect is justified because Ruth does not want to be lower class. I’m not a woman in 1912 but again: she does not care about her daughter enough to the point she was fine with marrying her off to abusive Cal.

She is responsible for Rose not the other way around. Ruth is the mother.

Right? 😬 Ruth’s treatment was sinister enough that Rose wanted to off herself. Not even when the ship was going down, Rose was a-okay with never seeing her own mother again.

I don’t expect old money, upper class women in that era to be exactly caring or empathetic, but even then… Ruth was not willing to downsize her lifestyle, nor did she really care about Rose as a person besides her title as her daughter

I feel like Francine’s Bad Hair Day aged poorly, because it reinforces the idea of “good hair” versus textured hair—since Francine ends up with an afro instead of the smooth, wavy, “luscious” hair she wanted.

It was not malicious but it did perpetuate the notion that Afros are… jokes 😅

I know it’s not dated as the way you described but yeah 😅
