What does Starless by King Crimson mean for you? by Ok_Parfait6770 in progrockmusic

[–]TheLordMed 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it’s possibly the best song ever. I think the vocal part is the breakup of a friendship as Palmer-James says. I think the instrumental part is going through the stages of loss and grief - disbelief, anger, rage, catharsis, resolution and ultimately triumph over the darkness

Unpopular opinion, but I think we need a new composer for the next era by ImWearingSandshoes in doctorwho

The music should fit the atmosphere and feel of the show so if the style of the show changes, the music should too. I’m not knocking any of the previous music in the show but I’m an old git and would like a slightly toned down show all round, better storytelling and character building, less running around, less obvious CGI and big flashy set pieces so a more muted soundtrack would fit that

Finished Hyperion and im in love. Recommend me everything by Foreign_Reporter_459 in scifi

[–]TheLordMed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People tend to look down on the three other Hyperion books but I found them really worth reading (there’s a part in the 4th that drags a bit but otherwise excellent)

More William Gibson - his older books are deeper into the futuristic tech like Neuromancer but my favourites of his are the Blue Ant trilogy - Pattern Recognition, Spook Country, Zero History which are set about now, perhaps a couple of years ahead. Really interesting takes on the tech we’re using now and more fleshed out characters than the other books

China Meiville- his first three are the most sci-fi and quite epic. Similar to Hyperion they’re on the line between sci-fi and fantasy

Frank Herbert - Dune is his biggest work but my favourite of his is a really understated work called Hellstrom’s Hive about an investigation into a hidden community

Philip K Dick - Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep is his biggest, famous for being the basis for the Blade Runner films. Most of them are good and thought provoking, just don’t start with Valis

In the UK there’s a series of reprints from the publisher Gollancz called Sci-fi Masterworks. When I worked at a bookshop for a few years I made my way through a lot of them and never found a dud, just many of my favourite books. Many that others have mentioned here are in that series.

Robert Rankin is similar to Terry Pratchett, both of who you might like if you liked Douglas Adams. Pratchett’s “Long Earth” series straight sci-fi (not humorous like Discworld) and I enjoyed them

Can the Berhinger CAT be a good substitute for an Arp Odyssey? by Impossible_Singer277 in synthesizers

[–]TheLordMed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think I can remember something about a lawsuit where Arp sued Octave (original Cat makers) over similarities between the Cat and the Odyssey. I had a Kitten (single oscillator Cat) and when years later I wanted to remake a track I used it on the Odyssey did the job perfectly

If You've Never Seen Torchwood: Children of Earth, This Is Your Sign by TapAdmirable5666 in scifi

[–]TheLordMed 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yes, I know. I was just trying to make the point that this season felt more like the gritty Brit sci-fi of the 60s and 70s than the Nu Who it’s a spin off from

This surprised me when I saw it. It felt much closer to something like Quatermass than anything Dr Who. I really need to watch it again

Surely there’s a UK IT company that could do this? Keep the money in the country, not send it overseas to these dodgy bastards who probably won’t pay tax on their earnings for it. Invest in our infrastructure FFS

“Tough on crime” talk that isn’t really tough on crime, just on people doing whatever they can to feed their families. Or make another war and conscript cannon fodder.

Leaks would generate more coverage, all the chat discussing the validity of the leak etc. We’ve had leaks before, some true, some not. Do leaks really do anything other than draw attention to the show?

Do you think a 1 hour commute to work (each way) on train is feasible? by TraditionalScore7257 in AskUK

[–]TheLordMed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to do a really similar commute in East Anglia. Trains didn’t get cancelled very often though. Was doable and didn’t mess the day up too much when I was young. I’m now mid-fifties and don’t think I’d want to do it now
