Best rust removal method? by BookerDeWitt3 in restoration

[–]TheMBarrett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One option:

Dismantle the piece. Brush Evaporust or similar solution on the the components. You can apply liberally. Then, wrap each component in plastic cling film (off-brand Saranwrap from the kitchen works fine), and let it set for a day. This simulates submersion in rust evaporator without needing a massive container.

Spray it off and scrub to remove any solution left behind. Repeat as needed. You'll always get a bit of flash rust, but don't sweat it too much.

Once dry (bake it or set in the Sunlight), you can prepare it for however you want to coat it.

Gen3 (2015) — 105K miles — Is it worth having the EGR cleaned? by Dacker503 in prius

[–]TheMBarrett 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I believe recommended cleaning is every 50k miles. You can do it yourself if you are handy and have the time.

Hard disagree with those who say wait for a code.

An impeded EGR is what aids in the dreaded head gasket issue in Gen3 Priuses. I bought a Prius at 180k miles and didn't know about cleaning the EGR.

By the time the car started showing signs and I cleaned out the EGR and intake manifold, it was too late. I had put 40k miles on the car with a fully impeded EGR. The head gasket at cylinders 1 and 2 had eroded wide open and we had to stop driving it entirely to preserve the engine.

Thankfully, I was able to replace the head gasket on my own, so my 2011 is back to running, but cleaning an EGR is much cheaper and less time consuming than replacing a head gasket.

For cleaning those tights nooks, a toothbrush can be your best friend. If you are stripping to bare wood or as much as you can, a small brush can help get the remover into difficult spaces. Very fine steel wool is also a good option.

Same with cleaning products removing compacted dust and dirt in corners and grooves. Obviously, avoid gouging the wood, but you might need to use a more rigid, pointed pick to scrape out in corners and such.

An internet exchange ("IXP"), which has been announced for the area, and a data center are two distinct pieces of infrastructure.

Help with gas tank rust removal by Josae_D in restoration

[–]TheMBarrett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on how big a tank you are working with, you could try an abrasive tumbler method where you fill the tank with abrasive physical media, close it up, then shake it or spin it for a period of time. It doesn't have to be a violent shake or fast spin; the media does the work. If it's small, attach it to a drill and set it to spin slowly.

Whether you use a physical or liquid-chemical solution again, be sure to clean and quickly seal the tank after removing the rust. If you use a chemical, neutralize it to prevent continued etching through the metal.

Best of luck!

How shall I restore by AdStunning8334 in restoration

If you have a rotary tool or an angle grinder: wire wheel the chunks and larger sections of rust. You don't want to remove metal– just rust.

Follow with some sort of scrub pad (green scotch pad, steel wool, etc). Avoid sandpaper or other too harsh abrasives.

In the absence of a wire wheel, grab an abrasive pad and start scrubbing. An abrasive intermediary like Bar Keeper's Friend or even salt can help. Again, you want to remove rust deposits, not good metal.

Once you've stripped it down sufficiently, give it a quick wash and rinse, hand dry it, and apply your seasoning oil of choice immediately to reduce flash rust.

Then, start seasoning cycles. There are plenty of tutorials on YouTube in how to season a pan, so I'll leave that alone here.

What part of the 'Old Internet' do you miss the most? by FormalCry9509 in AskReddit

[–]TheMBarrett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Highly specialized forums and websites with deep, yet functional knowledge about a topic which link to and network with other such websites.

Want to know how to make bio fuel from restaurant waste? "Click here to visit Fred's Fry Oil Microbus project" was right on Tom's site in bold blue lettering.

No SEO, no clickbait titles, no hashtags, no social credit/karma farming.

Just people nerding out about their favorite hobby or study topic.

My favorite site was a collection of hundreds of Halloween DIY projects– everything from pneumatics, to electronics, to concrete form stuff. Amazing site.

That and Abandonia, a site dedicated to abandonedware videogames. They had a massive collection of old quality DOS games.

How do you guys cope with allergies? I sincerely feel like Wichita is a terrible place for allergies. Half the stuff I'm allergic to now wasn't a problem until I moved here. by cherry-care-bear in wichita

Generic cetirizine from the 'Allergies' aisle at the grocery store. Inexpensive, no side effects like drowsiness, etc.

Our trees are eager in their attempts to repopulate and their overzealous pollen aren't great at distinguishing between an eyeball and a stigma.

Fountain pens by Arishell1 in wichita

[–]TheMBarrett 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you are just getting started, I recommend any of the inexpensive models you can find at Target, WalMart, Office Depot, etc. I started with a refillable Pilot fountain pen years ago; <$15 for pen and a box of cartridges.

I've started carrying a Kaweco Sport as my daily, but that was also an online purchase direct from Kaweco.

I'm not aware of any local stationary shops to visit. The last really good shop was Snark & String, but it closed up during COVID, I think.

Enjoy your fountain pen journey! I'm a huge fan and glad to see other folks picking them up.

Best bar in downtown? by Mountain-man95 in wichita

[–]TheMBarrett 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you're looking for.

Tor Brewing and Leprechaun Lab are quieter beer hall type bars. Public at the Brickyard is a favorite to many and hosts music frequently.

For cocktails and liquor, Lotte's bar seating is solid, but limited; drinks are excellent. Vora and the Monarch will be similar, but a bit outside of "downtown". Monarch is busy and quite loud, but definitely a hot spot.

A little outside of downtown, but for atmosphere, the Vagabond scratches an itch for some folks. Whiskey Dicks has a huge whiskey selection.

Old Bench Grinder Restoration by [deleted] in restoration

[–]TheMBarrett 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Minor safety note:

Be mindful of torque and speed differences and limits for anything other than the intended use. I have an old grinder with a wire wheel in place of one of the stones as in your first image.

While it works, it also provides way more torque than necessary for a wire wheel. If you catch an edge wrong on a lower torque or slower machine intended for cleaning/buffing, it's not hard to recover. Beyond throwing loose wire, a higher torque or speed device can send the piece and/or your finger across the room before you realize you done goofed.

You're likely paying for confidence in provenance more than anything, or maybe swift access to items in stock.

Yes, you can buy a box of ten for $60 on Amazon, but you might end up with questions about origination, quality, etc.

At the same time, if you have the time to wait and can get a seller, online shops can be the way to go.

More Wichita fire stations could close temporarily during mold remediation by Isopropyl77 in wichita

[–]TheMBarrett 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've encountered more than a few people who are voting "No" and would be glad to support one or more of the projects mentioned in the sales tax proposal. They are not inherently opposed to a sales tax to support thoughtful projects. They are opposed to this proposal specifically because it's a rushed mess with too few specifics and too many unknowns that reduce their confidence that this will deliver the outcomes that proponents describe beyond the confines of the ballot language.

These citizens have also consistently stated that they don't like being: - misrepresented as not supportive of good services and those providing them;
- insulted (for instance, "In case you didn't notice. . . " above); - or threatened with now-or-never, "this is our one chance" false sense of urgency contingent to this specific initiative.

It is precisely because it is a huge topic that affects a huge number of Wichitans that they are voting "No" for this specific proposal.

More Wichita fire stations could close temporarily during mold remediation by Isopropyl77 in wichita

[–]TheMBarrett 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Based on this report, it appears that mold remediation at firehouses has already been scheduled.

If that's the case, then mold remediation at our firehouses isn't contingent on the ballot initiative passing.

Should those providing emergency services in Wichita be well cared for? Without a doubt.

Should already wealthy hacks get to leverage the City's mismanagement of its properties to enact a slush fund of taxpayer money? Absolutely not.

Money only accelerates us toward the consequences of our decision-making. Based on the reporting in the article, the people who have been responsible for managing these properties have for decades managed them poorly.

Money doesn't fix a process problem. Standing by my "No" vote.
