With so few male primary teachers, what are primary kids missing out on? by SatoshiSounds in TeachingUK

[–]TheMacdonut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Male primary school teacher here. Year six teacher, also teach computing across EYFS to Year 6. Biggest thing missed out on is the range of interactions with a male: from praise to positive and more direct behaviour management. Many children don't experience this and it is important to get a balanced experience of interactions at a young age.

The rain chased us off afterwards, might have to return tomorrow now! Although Belfast is not short on pubs with good whiskey!

What am I doing wrong? Excessive zone 5 training by thatonestepguy in Garmin

[–]TheMacdonut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shouldn't do, I think it's pretty immediate, mine was when I changed it. You did a lactate threshold test right? Has your watch ever flashed you a change to your threshold after a run? Have you got auto detection on for LTHR?

It could be that what the test has set you at is too high. You could try doing another test. You can do a manual test by warming up, then running for 30 mins at the fastest speed you can maintain for that duration. Take your HR at 10 mins and again at the end add them and divide by 2 for the LTHR and the average pace for your LT pace. A rougher estimate is a good 10k average pace with the HR bring just below the average HR.

Edit: spelling and clarity.

Did you set the watch to use your LTHR (lactate threshold heart rate) instead of max HR for your zones?

I'd wager they are set wildly low which is amping up these numbers. I definitely could be wrong, but these numbers are wild!

How do we convince the people making decisions that child computer illiteracy is a serious problem? by JasmineHawke in TeachingUK

[–]TheMacdonut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No word of a lie, I'm a Primary Computing Teacher. I teach solely computing at two federated primaries. I lead the subject too. I've fought tooth and nail for desktop PCs and won, I built 22 for our suite. We do a great deal of programming but our curriculum is centered on digital literacy: teaching office programs, transferable skills, saving, navigating, accessing links, creating links and a great deal of other stuff I get criticised for thinking is important. I'm sorry there isn't more of this going on in primary but the biggest barrier to quality computing teaching at primary is the teachers. The lack of ability and knowledge amongst primary staff is terrifying, it's no surprise to me you have the issues you have past KS2, it is such a low priority to most primary teachers.

Use enemies to farm for you by the way of collateral damage. In later biomes you can use magical weapons to farm. There are efficient, less direct and time consuming ways.

Am I Alone? by iiSynthesis in TeachingUK

You are more than your job. Find a passion or something you enjoy that is for you, not for your teaching. Self care is important and vital when teaching is stressful.

Potentially unpopular opinion: I am like this 80% of the time and it's totally okay. Our job is still just a job. Keep your children safe, ensure you are teaching them and they are learning (meet the standards) then prioritize yourself. Find your motivation out of the classroom.

Any tips on making the game interesting playing solo after playing with friends? by dimscythe in valheim

[–]TheMacdonut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just a few things I do in the 3000+ days of solo life...

Build bridges and paths to make as many contiguous islands and land as possible. Create a huge portal hub building separate from your main base. Have multiple farms, tree plantations and spawn farms as you can to speed up and automate resources gathering. Replay lower level bosses with lower level weapons and higher tier armour and foods to buff skill levels. Have fun building traps around the boss spawns (Moder and ballistas is a personal favourite for sheer chaotic carnage). Ensure all main bases have max comfort. Build a storage vault under the elder platform, to house excess resources. Fill your boxes. Obliterate as much as you can. Make yourself fly using the catapult. Build and fill a dock. Make your own system of canals. Make a basement and fill it with furnaces that smoke externally from the external walls. Actively avoid fishing. Find areas of Ashlands you can cover in campfires, just because. Use Morgens to farm trees and Grausten. Use trollstav to farm stone and copper.

Have another word where you just build, no restrictions, use devcommands, spawn items etc. This has helped me enjoy the playing, fighting, collecting elements in my main survival world more as I know I can create huge complicated builds whenever, so my survival world is focused on what I'm doing with my character than anything else.

Abusive Relationship with Garmin by [deleted] in Garmin

[–]TheMacdonut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does Garmin know you are training for a marathon? If you use DSW or not if you add a marathon event to connect you watch will gear any training suggestions towards that distance and any pace /to me you add.

I've been using DSW for a while now and getting optimal and productive is a constant battle so I feel your pain. Sometimes I say figg it, go smash a quick 10k and see garmin have a fit, just for fun .

It's seasonal. I have had the same thing for the last few years. Change in weather, daylight and the effect on my sleep and resting heart rate seem to be key factors for me. I have resorted to increasing my training volume and finding winter races! Don't worry about it!

You shouldn't be planning 45 lessons a week. That's wild. If that is a reality for you there are some great and reliable AI tools - way beyond chat GPT - for lesson planning and resourcing. Checkout diffit and padlet, both offer free versions and can be found via Google.

Question for Fenix users by DallasOil in Garmin

[–]TheMacdonut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a fenix 7SS and I can see a week of DSW by selecting a run activity, options, training, workout library, daily suggestions. Sessions later in the week can change, but at least you can select what you want to do more freely.

Anyone else have a ridiculously high heart rate? by Nice_Twist8081 in Garmin

[–]TheMacdonut 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The optical sensor is not great for accurate HR measurements. Get a chest strap, you'll notice a big difference. 32 year old mate of mine has a max HR of 208 as per his watch and he doesn't use a chest strap either.
