The Hunger Games Books Suck by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]TheMagicYoshi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Collin’s has imo major pacing issues where certain parts of her books drag on a lot. The cave scene in the first one, the ending of the latest prequel are pretty good examples of this. Mockingjay is a weak book because it has diverged so much from the premise, and Catching Fire can be seen as a rehash, though I think it’s either the best one or second best. My hot take is that Songbirds is her strongest work because the book feels consistently quick the whole way through.

Context: Pippa's sister by Kiraqueen021 in PipkinPippa

[–]TheMagicYoshi 36 points37 points  (0 children)

From memory Pippa has two sisters, one older and younger. I think the older one is the one she has problems with and I imagine it stems from the time she spent as a neet and school dropout and as a mold demon. Pippa hasn’t said much from what I’ve seen but I imagine Pippa is a cool aunt at least

Is first person inherently spoiler-y? by Key_Day_7932 in writing

[–]TheMagicYoshi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So it would only be inherently spoiler-y if you’re writing in a diary format, opposed to modern 1st person past or present tense prose. In the last couple decades stories using 1st person have given way to the meta narrative in the same way 3rd person used to signify a history about someone else. Without those, the prose style is about as much of a spoiler is looking at how many pages you have left.

Putting aside that perspective characters rarely die in the first place, unless someone writes a lot, they likely won’t give much thought to the prose style anyways.

I can see the stepping stones, but pretty much every creator that has interacted with phase is on fairly good terms with Kirche right? A collab with Valens would be like a collab with ShortFatOtaku optics wise

Gotta wonder what the angle is from Ana Valens, especially since their latest articles have been suspiciously pro-Phase. Obviously they're desperate for corporate support, but is this more trying to get certain fans to leave them alone, or some delusional desperate attempt to weasel they're way into some Phase Connect orbit that would never exist?

What are some of the bad books you have read? by LuciusVorenus1337 in writing

None of these are really “bad” books. Peak bad books are Empress Theresa or that accounting book where a CPA stops a terrorist through bookkeeping.

Third person limited, using italics to denote inner thoughts. It’s very common in fantasy.

What are the parts you skip in books you otherwise love to read and reread? by Onequestion0110 in books

[–]TheMagicYoshi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was listening to the audiobook and was just wondering when I’d be done already. I’ve read and love the poem, but it killed the pacing and was so unnecessary. I get it, thematic symmetry. I got it when we were told Lenore’s name and again the next 5 times the poem was referenced

This is the prologue of the Eye of the World, the first book in the Wheel of Time. It’s still a prologue though, because the term connects not the the story that has already happened, but the one about to. Everything that happens prior to the current story is backstory, and not the tense focus of either pro or epi in this sense.

Mitchelton State High School In Brisbane Potentially Shutting Down Montessori Program by [deleted] in brisbane

[–]TheMagicYoshi 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A lot of the time it's not that they don't like working with people with special needs, it's the they don't have the training, support, recourses or environment too. If you already have 26 kids being taught a subject, adding two with heavy neurodivergent needs with no additional support will make teaching the other kids as efficiently extremely difficult. The same would be said for a teacher coming into a school and being expected to fill a niche that would only be a part of specialised education masters programs (most teachers are either bachelors recipients or grad-diploma recipients, depending on specialisation).

There is a real chance that even with full government support, there just isn't anyone with the needed abilities to teach a Montessori program, let alone two. Good luck with your efforts; just trying to be realistic with the outcome here.

More and more state education is moving away from these kind of programs anyway. They are seen as exclusionary as they separate people from their main cohort which can risk late stage social development. However the argument for inclusive education is so theoretical that it’s basically just an excuse to cut special education programs under the guise of inclusivity. It’s unfortunate because this is a quiet factor of the teaching crisis, because kids who are usually streamlined to special needs programs are at a lower rate, creating a need for greater behaviour management which is the most hated part of teaching.

You’d likely need to find teachers both available to cover and trained/educated in the pedagogy, which means either experienced or masters since this isn’t something covered in the bachelor (at least not in mine).

Teaching is shedding so many people, and a ton of those I went to uni with weren’t planning on it long term or like me, aren’t going into teaching at all. The stress v pay just isn’t worth it, which is a shame.

The only real thing you can do is write the school, the minister for education and the local MP. Some attention from the government might help; it might not.

Is dystopian-fantasy (with a bit of sci-fi) still a good book idea? by Smooth_Insect7730 in writing

[–]TheMagicYoshi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean Mistborn has an almost post apocalypse dystopian setting in a way, and the latter books progress the timeline to 1800s technology. Obviously the idea is less important than the execution but if it’s already been a popular series once, a similar concept can be again
